Chapter 99

Leslie felt a chill as she continued, “Chelsea was supposed to live with Chris’s parents and only stay with us for two months during summer vacation. We agreed that she should return to her grandparents to attend first grade after the vacation.

“They have a nanny there to take care of her. However, unexpectedly, Chelsea refused to go back and insisted on staying here to attend first grade.”

Lisa frowned. “Since Chris needs to go to work, does that mean you must care for Chelsea? Leslie, you’re still young, and the Tannin family doesn’t want any more children. Don’t neglect your career to care for someone else’s child. After all, women should have their achievements.

“It’s okay if Chelsea is grateful and appreciative, but she’s focused on disrupting your relationship with Chris.”

Leslie felt troubled. “I know, but I promised Chris I would treat his child as my own when we married.”

Lisa said urgently, “I’m begging you not to let love blind you.”

Leslie felt a bit overwhelmed.

“How about we watch a documentary about that writer you told me about-the one who went to live off the grid? We can even try out that lifestyle for ourselves.”

Leslie became embarrassed. She knew she might be a little love-blind, but it did not seem so extreme.

“Leslie, it’s not that easy to take care of children. You need to feed them, teach them how to read, and do homework. It’s not as easy as it sounds. If you can handle it well, Chris will appreciate you.

“Conversely, he won’t like it if Chelsea gets sick or doesn’t do well in school. Besides, Chelsea belongs to him and his ex-wife. Why should you neglect your career and take care of her?”

Lisa feared Leslie would be confused, so she continued, “Also, consider why Chelsea suddenly refused to return to her grandparents. Her mother probably instigated her to stay and disrupt your peaceful life.

“You should tell Chris she can stay but hire a nanny since you’re busy with work. Otherwise, send Chelsea back to her grandparents to continue her studies. Don’t be afraid of offending Chris, especially since you’re his wife.

“It’s not like you’re his maid and are afraid of him deducting your salary. You must reduce Chelsea’s contact with her mother to improve Chelsea’s behavior. If not, she might go down the wrong path.”

Leslie and Lisa had not seen each other in a few days, so they had much to catch up on. The two went shopping together after lunch. Leslie only went home when it was five in the evening.

Before leaving that morning, she had informed Christopher that she would meet with Lisa and return in the evening. He agreed, and they arranged for Chelsea to stay with her grandparents for the day. Afterward, Grace would bring Chelsea back home.

Leslie was about to open the door but suddenly heard Grace’s voice from inside, “Does Leslie even know how to be a proper wife? It’s already so late, yet she’s not home. All she knows is to run around. She should settle down and focus on being a good wife and mother.”

Christopher responded, “Mom, Leslie also has a job. She didn’t work this summer to care for Chelsea.”

“Speaking of which, I remember you telling me she was a director. You’d better advise her to quit that job. She’s still so young and even more beautiful than your ex-wife. People in the film industry always surround her.

“That’s the quickest way to get involved in an affair. You don’t even know if she’s out there, giving sleeping with other men.”
