Chapter 43

Seeing Leslie’s hesitation, Stephanie covered up her mockery and said, “That’s because Ben is the boss of Villagio Center. Didn’t Christopher mention it to you?”

Lisa smiled. “My brother-in-law has always been low-key and doesn’t brag about these things to my sister. She’s drawn to his character, not his wealth.”

Stephanie shot a glance at Leslie and said, “Your sister is lucky. Marrying Christopher is quite an honor given her family background.”

“Are you suggesting that my sister is a gold digger?” Lisa retorted. “My sister is young and hasn’t been married before. It’s Christopher who is lucky to have her.”

“I’m just saying she’s marrying up. The Tannin family is well known in Queenston. Even if Christopher’s father isn’t the chairman, he still holds shares in Tannin Group. Christopher is quite talented. Your sister is skipping years of hard work by marrying him.”

Stephanie’s words created a stir in both sisters’ hearts. Lisa took a sharp breath.

‘I didn’t expect Christopher to come from such an influential background,’ Lisa thought.

The Tannin Group was a well-known clothing company in the country, and she knew them despite her lack of interest in economic news. With thousands of locations nationwide, they owned seven fashion brands catering to men, women and,

children.

Lisa assumed Christopher only came from a scholarly background since he had never mentioned these things to Leslie.

She glanced at her stepsister, who was lost in thought, and immediately reached under the table to hold her hand.

Leslie quickly regained her composure, realizing she could not let these people see her ignorance of her husband. She did not want to become a joke in their eyes.

“It’s all right, Lisa. You don’t need to say anything else. I indeed married up to Christopher.” Leslie forced a smile, signaling Lisa to stop talking.

“What’s the big deal about marrying up?” Benedict furrowed his eyebrows disapprovingly. “My father is the chairman of Tannin Group, but it doesn’t make me feel superior.”

“You’re right.” Lucas held his cup and gently advised, “You and Ms. Leslie are outstanding individuals and have promising futures ahead.”

“I think so, too,” Lisa smiled, glancing at Lucas appreciatively. Suddenly, a loud thud echoed through the room as a teacup hit the table heavily.

Leonard lazily narrowed his eyes and remarked, “Have we ordered yet? We’ve almost had our fill of tea.”

“Not yet. Let’s order.” Lucas took the menu from the waiter. Instead of ordering for himself, he politely handed the menu to Leslie. “Ladies first.”

“Thank you.” Leslie was absent-minded. She looked at the menu to calm herself, but realized she had no appetite to make a

selection.

Thinking that Leslie was unfamiliar with such exquisite dishes, Stephanie suggested, “You can order the premium abalone, bluefin tuna, and filet with foie gras. They’re all excellent choices, and Leonard likes them.”

Leslie pushed the menu back. “You must dine here often, Ms. Stephanie. Why don’t you order since you know the place better?

“I

Stephanie took the lead and ordered more than a dozen dishes. Quince clicked his tongue and said, “Leonard, look at how much Steph cares for you. There are twelve dishes, and five of them are your favorites.”

Stephanie blushed shyly.

Leonard looked at Quince and said, “Have more of it.”

“Thanks, Leonard—”

Leonard added, “Then choke to death, and I’ll attend your funeral,”

Quince fell silent. ‘What did I do to offend Leonard?’
