-Alex’s POV-

I tore my bloodied hand away. Terui fell limp to the ground. There was no feeling of satisfaction, no feeling of victory. All that was left was the bitter feeling of disgust. I could feel the discomfort that wedged in Nathan’s heart. He finally got the apology that he had longed for in the past. And just when he gave up on it, Terui finally apologised. In his dying breath. I let out a sigh of annoyance. I took a towel that Raphael offered me, drying the blood off my hand before holding Nathan’s hand.

“You okay?” I asked. He nodded stiffly, but I could feel his emotions as clear as day. Conflicted. I sighed and gave him a peck on his cheek. He smiled wryly.

“I guess everything is over?” Raphael asked.

“Yeah. There is no way he can come back to life anymore.” I answered. Fenrir growled lowly in annoyance. He too doesn’t enjoy pointless killing. Robbing anyone of their immortality wasn’t a fun or admirable thing to do.

“I wished I was the one who killed him.” Raphael sulked.

Taking off most of my clothes, I transformed into my black wolf. I let out a victory howl. Cheers could be heard resonating from inside the barricade. Nathan buried himself into my fur a feeling of sadness came over him. As much as I want to shift back and hug him, Fenrir protested. He wanted to feel his mate in his fur. I got comfortable and sprawled on the prickly grass. Nathan shifted himself a bit, relaxing against my body. Raphael sensed the mood and decided to leave us alone, informing the rest. We sat in comfortable silence, while Nathan gathered his thoughts. Fenrir gave a wolf smile. He was glad that Nathan and Gale weren’t seasoned killers, that they still feel for their enemies.

“Why do you think he said sorry?” Nathan asked softly. Fenrir let out a whine of concern before huffing.

“Don’t worry. Well, I don’t hate him. But was killing him really the only choice we had?” I was wondering what if Nathan wouldn’t have understood but it seems that he understands Fenrir’s whines and growls perfectly. Fenrir huffed once, letting out a defeated growl.

“You’re right, he had decided to walk this path. There wasn’t anything else we could have done. I just wished he would have realised his mistakes earlier.” Nathan lamented. Fenrir gave a soft whine before nuzzling him. No matter what happened, Terui had been his mate. His first mate. I saw the hope that lit up in Nathan’s eyes when they first met 5 years ago. Although it hurts that I wasn’t the first, I had never seen any glow in his eyes until Terui entered his life.

But I was now the one who puts the light in his eyes. And that was enough for me.

We heard footsteps pounding their way across the forest floor, towards us. I stood over Nathan possessively and let out a warning growl. The footsteps halted and before long, Lucas revealed himself to us. He threw his hands up in the air, showing that he is not a threat. He looked to one side and signaled with his head for the other person to do the same. The pregnant lady from before.

She looked even worse than when we saw her earlier. She leaned against the nearest tree. Her breath was laboured. She struggled, barely able to support herself with both arms pressing against the sturdy tree. Her chest heaved heavily and her arms shook uncontrollably. You can tell she was barely hanging on.

“What is it?” I hissed out, not in the mood for games and interactions. Lucas, who looked like he was about to answer, was cut off by Rose.

“I want to be with him.” She croaked painfully. I stared at her dubiously. Terui was an asshole, to put it lightly. Why would anyone want to stay with him is beyond me. But she spoke clearly, and purposefully. She looked me dead in the eye. It was clear that even her voice was starting to fail her, but this is what she wished for.

Nathan pulled at my fur. I looked down, even though I already know what is he trying to tell me. I nudged his forehead. I placed my head back on the prickly grass and nodded in the direction of the body.

With support from Lucas, she managed to curl up beside Terui. She held her abdomen in between them. Her breathing started to slow as she relinquished herself to her fate. In a few minutes, she was gone.

None of us said anything. There was nothing to say. The sight of the two of them lying on the grass floor, it was almost a depiction of a happy family. I can only hope that the Moon Goddess would be willing to redeem their souls.

Lucas took off his clothes behind a tree and shifted into his wolf. As per tradition, he let out a sad howl. It signaled the death of a pack member. Over the distance, we could hear the mourning from the Southwind Pack. I know that I told Jake we will try our best to save Terui but I knew from the start that it wasn’t possible.

You can call it a grudge, you can call it revenge, but Jake needs a reality check and start to realize that life isn’t a fairytale. His life, if it wasn’t for Nathan, would have ended long ago. His mate, if Nathan hadn’t intervened, would have already left him. Everything that he has now comes from his own brother’s sacrifice.

I know what I did wasn’t right, or fair. If I told Nathan, he would never approve of my method or my thoughts. I wasn’t trying to crush Jake’s hope. But he needs to start facing the realities of the world. And sometimes, a simple apology will never fix the mistakes made in the past.

Lucas gave us a quick bow and trotted off back to his mate. Jake is sure to need some help right now. Nathan and I lay there a while longer, waiting for either Druid or Kalen to give them a proper burial. Druid showed up and as instructed, opened a pocket in the earth and slowly lifted them into the hole. With ease, he patched up the gap in the ground.

It was finally over.
