Chapter 472 Contradictions

"You can still laugh?" Athena glanced at him. "If it festers and gets infected, you might lose your hand."

"You handled it so well; it definitely won't get infected." Byron believed in her even more than he did in himself.

Athena tended to the wound.

"My child is quite the handful. One day she's getting into a scuffle with a goose and injuring herself; the next she's taking a tumble off his skateboard or inline skates. I'm afraid the servants won't handle it properly, so I take care of it all myself," she said flatly.

Byron was surprised.

Then he remembered that she had a daughter.

As he listened to her gentle tone, Byron's heart softened. "Fighting with a goose?"

"Yes," Athena replied, "Rose spoils her and sets up a special garden to keep all sorts of animals. The first thing she does every morning is go around greeting each little creature. That goose was bought from the market, meant to be eaten, but when she saw it, she cried so hard that we couldn't bear to eat it, so we kept it."

Byron listened quietly.

He could picture that lively and kind-hearted child in his mind.

She was just like Mia.

"The very next day, she got into a fight with the goose and got bitten in the arm. Rose was so angry she stewed the goose that night."

Athena couldn't help but find it amusing even now.

Mia later found out the goose had been stewed.

But she was only sad for a few seconds. With tears in her eyes, she said sorry to the goose and had its meat.

From then on...

All poultry on the island had to be taken care of.

Rose really didn't want Mia to become friends with chickens or ducks again.

"She's so adorable," Byron said softly.

Athena looked up at him.

But she quickly looked away and nodded. "Yes, she really is adorable. Everyone who meets her likes her."

"I will too!" Byron declared.

Athena made no comments.

He indeed would.

"It's done."

She had wrapped the wound with fresh gauze. "Don't get it wet or let it open again. I will be too busy tomorrow to take care of you." "Okay." Byron nodded.

"See you."

Athena wiped her hands, grabbed her bag, and headed out.

"I'll walk you out," Byron offered as he stood up and followed her.

Athena didn't object since there was no longer any abuse from Lola.

The two of them walked along the quiet ancient road at night, one in front of the other.

"Has the date for the burial been set?" inquired Athena.

"The 17th," replied Byron. "Will you be attending?"

"No," Athena said, shaking her head. "After the presentation at Bloor Food, I'll be returning home to be with my daughter." Byron halted.

He reached out to grab Athena's arm, pulling her into his arms.

He used too much strength.

And it caused Athena's forehead to collide with his chest.

She grunted in pain, covered her forehead with her hand, and frowned.

"Let the nanny bring her here," Byron said in a deep voice, "That man is over there. I won't allow you to see him again!"

Sure enough!

It was all an act.

"He's not there!" Athena said through gritted teeth.

"Did you separate? Did he mistreat you?" Byron asked, his voice deep with concern.

How torn he was!

Part of him hoped that the man had mistreated her so that she could return to him without any lingering attachment.

But at the same time, he feared that she had been unhappy in the past few years.

"Why do you know about it? Didn't you give me an ultimatum to choose between divorce and widowhood?" Athena resisted the urge to roll her eyes.

"If he bullies you, then you don't have to choose. He can be out of the picture," Byron said firmly.

Athena looked at him.

A helpless laugh escaped her mouth.

"What if you mistreat me?"
