Shouldn’t Promise

Violet POV

I was pretty surprised to see Dave happily having his dinner with Dane because he was usually unfriendly to every man in my life.

Dane was having lasagna with so much concentration, it was as if he hadn’t had dinner in a long time. There were crumbs around his l*ps. which I felt like wiping. Instead, I focused on Dave.

“You’ve got it all over your face, Dave!” I said as I wiped his face with a napkin, glancing at Dane.

He pushed my hand away and wiped his face with his little fingers. “I am not a baby,” he growled.

Dane snapped his head at Dave and grinned while I rolled my eyes. “You are still my little baby,” I said, and wiped his face, anyway.

“So, Dave, what do you want to be when you grow up?” Dane asked, scooping a large portion of lasagna from his plate.

Dave blinked his eyes, licked his l*ps and innocently said, “I want to be like you–rich and powerful and scary. But mommy doesn’t want me to become like that.”

Dane’s chest swelled with pride, and a warm smile graced his face. He glanced at me and raised his eyebrow. “I bet your mommy wouldn’t like it. She didn’t like your dad either.”

“You know my daddy? Was he strong and rich and scary?” Dave instantly stopped eating his food as his eyes fixed on Dane with intrigue.

“I think I know him, but all I can say is that you are as smart as he is.” Dane ruffled Dave’s hair with a smile.

I felt my cheeks turn red as Dane looked at me with a smirk. I averted. my gaze. The doubt crossed my mind that Dane knew about his son. Dear goddess, I didn’t know what Dane was at, but I was definitely going to the witch tomorrow to get Dave’s potion.

Dave had a face–splitting grin on his face. “Can you get my father to meet us?”

“Of course I can,” Dane replied cockily.

“Dave!” I almost shouted, getting scared. “It’s time to go to bed. Finish your dinner fast!”

He whined and pouted. “I like Dave!” he said, as if that was an excuse. for him to stay back.

“I like you too, pup,” Dane replied. “But like your mommy said, it’s time to go to bed,”

My eyes popped out of their sockets when Dave grinned and agreed to Dane. He was never this amenable to me.

Dave turned to me and said, “Mommy, you can marry Dane. I like him.”

My cheeks blushed a deep shade of red. “Enough. We are not discussing my marriage with you!”

We finished dinner quickly, and I took Dave to his room. The moment. I put him on the bed and tucked him in the blanket, he dozed off. Quietly, I padded out of the room and closed the door behind me. I gasped when I found Dane standing outside the room, leaning against the wall. He had his hands buried in his pockets.

His sharp green eyes pinned me with an intensity that fluttered a nest of butterflies in my belly. “Is Dave mine?”

My breath lodged in my throat as fear skittered down my spine. “No,” I replied instantly. “He isn’t.” I hurried back to the kitchen and began washing the dishes. He followed me there and leaned against the door with his arms folded across his chest.

“Dave is very smart and intelligent, Violet,” he said in a low voice. “He will soon know that he’s a werewolf. How will you hide him?”

With clenched teeth, I turned to face him, feeling the anger simmering inside me. “I know that, Alpha Dane, but I won’t make him an arrogant, rich bastard who rejected his mate out of pure arrogance and hubris! I will do my best to make him a gentleman. He is going to stay in the human town and get to know their ways. Humans are better!”

He cocked his head. “You mean humans like Jayden?”

“You think this is a joke? I-” My phone rang, cutting me off. I rushed to pick up the call. It was Brenda. “Brenda, is everything okay?”

“Violet!” she rasped. “They raided my house!”

“What? Oh my God!”

“The authorities have confiscated every one of my potions and other things,” she cried. “I am so sorry, but they have taken Dave’s potion as well. It’s a mess!” she sniffled. “I will go MIA for a few days. Until then, bear with me.”

Earth sl*pped beneath my feet. “But-” I peeked at Dane and lowered my voice. “But his po- medicine’s effect is getting over.”

“Violet, I know, but I can’t help it!” she sounded extremely nervous. “I don’t know who tipped the authorities. I am not in my home. Will

contact you soon!” Saying that, she disconnected the call.

“Brenda. Bren- Shit!” I stabbed my fingers in my hair. What was happening? I closed my eyes and tipped my head up in exasperation. Brenda’s house was in a shady locality, but raids never happened there. This was so strange, yet this was possible. Desperation swirled inside me. Where was I going to find a new witch who would make the same. potion?

“Anything wrong?” Dane asked me, stepping into the living room.

How could I say to him that everything was about to go wrong? I shook my head, realizing that a tear escaped my eye only when my cheek became wet. “A friend…”

Dane rounded the table to come and stand next to me. He placed his hands on my shoulder and turned me towards him. Curling his fingers beneath my chin, he lifted my face. “You can tell me what is wrong, Violet. I am here and I am not going anywhere.”

I don’t know why, but a sob escaped my throat and the next I knew was that he wrapped his arms around me, sighing in relief. Tears wouldn’t stop and I clutched his chest, letting go of it. There was so much tension in my b*dy. He lifted me up in his arms and took me to my bedroom where he laid me on the bed. He sat at the edge and brushed my hair. The irony of the situation wasn’t wasted on me. The wolf I wanted to get away from was consoling me.

“Mommy?” I heard Dave’s concerned voice. “Are you angry with Danc?” He came to lie down next to me.

“No, darling.” I circled my arm around him, my fear returning with full force. I wondered if I should tell Dane that Dave was his son, but then he would insist on taking Dave away. A shudder rippled through me. I refuse to be separated from my son. The White Fur pack would never accept me.

“Don’t worry, pup.” As he ruffled Dave’s hair, Dane whispered softly, “Everything will soon get better.”

“You promise?” Dave asked.

“I promise,” Dane replied with love in his eyes.

I stared at Dane. Who was he to promise my little pup? “Sweetie, it is time for you to go to bed,” I interrupted.

He jumped out of bed and asked Dane, “Will you come back tomorrow?”

Dane pulled Dave into his arms and closed his eyes. “Yes, I will definitely come here tomorrow.” He k*ssed his head and got up. “Come, let’s take you to bed.”

After Dane made him sleep, he came to me in the kitchen, where I was clearing all the dishes. This felt… normal. I hadn’t felt so normal and exasperated at the same time. “Would you like to have coffee?” I asked him.

When he smiled and said “Yes,” I was entranced.

I turned quickly towards the counter to take out the coffee mugs. shouldn’t promise something you can’t keep.”

“You

“I intend to keep that promise, Vi,” he said. Suddenly, he was behind me, his arms caging me on either side.
