Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Yvonne thought she saw a ghost. She cried out in shock and threw herself in her mother’s arms. “Ah, it’s a ghost. A ghost,

Mom!”

“Are you a human or a ghost?” Henry asked nervously.

He recalled how they had found a burnt body among the ash after the fire five years ago. They assume it was Caroline back then. Thus, they put the body to rest as soon as possible as they were afraid that the police would investigate the matter.

For that reason, they all panicked and were shocked when they saw Caroline.

“She’s not a ghost. A ghost has no shadows. Wait. Caroline? Is she alive? Does that mean she didn’t die from that fire?” Melissa muttered in shock.

“That’s right. I’m Caroline Lewis, and I’m still living and breathing.”

Little did the three know that Daniel was the one who died in place of Caroline five years ago during that fire.

Compared to how she had to escape miserably five years ago, Caroline now had a much stronger m y and was fearless. She remembered everything in the past like it was yesterday. Those gruesome experiences forced her to grow and mature. into the bold woman she had become.

Her heart and mind had become so well defended that they were indestructible.

As the saying went, an eye for an eye. Caroline was determined to make the trio pay for what they did to her mother, the Thompson family, Daniel, and herself.

Caroline stood confidently in front of them and glanced coldly at their shocked faces. “Are you all disappointed that I came

back alive?”

Melissa was the first to snap back to her senses. She quickly put on a friendly smile and said, “Caroline, you’re really back! It’s great that you’re not dead. You have no idea what your dad and I have gone through these couple of years. We were so devastated thinking that you were no longer in our lives this entire time.”

“How pretentious! She’s using the same repulsive tricks as before to trick me into believing her! Tsk. Devastated? More like she’s taking pleasure in my demise, thought Caroline.

“That’s funny. You don’t seem devastated. On the contrary, you married my dad once my mom died, and now the three of you live happily as a family. Dad’s a successful businessman while you’re a wealthy man’s wife. How glorious is that?” mocked Caroline.

Her biggest regret over the years was that she never got to see her mother for the last time because the latter died two months after she fled.

Still, Caroline wondered how her mother had died, and she swore to find out about it..

She knew that the people standing before her must have had a hand in it.

Melissa tugged at Harry’s sleeve and got his attention. He quickly asked, “Caroline, if you’re not dead, where have you been all these years? Why didn’t you come home?”

Even though Harry seemed concerned, he felt flustered on the inside. Perhaps even a little scared since he could see that Caroline did not come in peace.

He could not help but wonder what she was up to by coming back out of the blue.

Caroline’s lips curled into a mocking sneer as she looked over at Yvonne. “I came back now, didn’t I? Fortunately, I managed to return before Yvonne’s wedding.”

Yvonne got back up to her feet upon hearing that. It was as though she had forgotten the atrocious things she did five years ago. Yvonne then asked without any shame, “Caroline, are you serious? Are you willing to marry Quintin on my behalf?”

“Of course. I’ve been away for five years. I should do my part in the Lewis residence so that Dad and Melissa’s efforts in raising me won’t go to waste,” Caroline replied sarcastically.

Little did

any of the three know that her true purpose in returning was to marry Quintin.

She was determined to marry him whether he was alive or dead.

An awkwardness came over Harry when he heard her words. Still, he put up a strong front and said, “I’m glad you feel that way. We’ll settle with that if you’re willing to marry on your sister’s behalf.”

All in all, Caroline solved a massive problem for Melissa and Yvonne by agreeing to marry in Yvonne’s place. Not to mention, it was Caroline’s details that the family submitted to the Zieglers for consideration. Thus, the three felt it was only appropriate that Caroline was the one to suffer from marrying Quintin, who was in a coma.

Soon, a s t came in and reported, “Mr. Lewis, Mrs. Lewis, the car from the Ziegler family has arrived. They’re here to collect your daughter.”

Chapter 3

“Okay, okay. Tell them we’ll be there right away.”

And so, the wedding dress meant for Yvonne ended up on Caroline’s body. The trio then put the veil on her and brought her to the main gate.

The Ziegler family was the head of the five prominent families in Jipsdale. As one of the most well-known rich and powerful families, the wedding party came with more than 10 Rolls-Royce to pick up the bride.

Once Caroline got shoved inside one of those luxury cars, the party drove off.

Meanwhile, Melissa rushed back to the house after the cars were gone and said to Yvonne, “This is great. You don’t have to marry and live as a widow now that the s d girl replaces you.”

“I heard that Quintin doesn’t have much time left. I’m sure Caroline would eventually become a widow,” replied Yvonne.

She had a wide grin across her face now that her biggest worry was off her back. Yvonne could barely contain her excitement at that point.

Then again, she would have agreed to marry Quintin if it was not that he was dying soon. After all, Quintin was the most eligible bachelor in all of Dartan.

Being the head of the five prominent families of Jipsdale, the Ziegler family was the top of the top and a prestigious family with great wealth.

The luxurious car Caroline was in soon arrived in a grand manor a few thousand square feet in size – The Ziegler family residence, also known as Everglow Manor.

As soon as Caroline got out of the car, a housekeeper led her into the living room. Caroline could sense that many people were sitting there and discussing her marriage to Quintin, which would hopefully bring good fortune to the latter.

“The Lewis residence’s daughter is here, Mrs. Ziegler. Shall we carry out the ceremony now?”

“Quintin’s still unconscious. Let’s just s p the ceremony and get on with things.”

It was then that a housekeeper rushed in from outside and reported, “Mrs. Ziegler, Mr. Ziegler has miraculously awoken!”

Catherine Smith was thrilled when she heard that and replied. “Really? Quintin’s awake? That’s great. This girl is lucky indeed. Michael, bring this girl over to him right away.”

“Yes,” answered Michael, the Ziegler family’s butler.

The women sitting in the living room were stunned by the sudden change of events. They could not believe that a person deemed to be in critical condition by the doctor would wake up from a coma out of nowhere.

They even started to wonder if the marriage had indeed brought good fortune to the family.

The Tanglevine Residence where Quintin resided was on the east of Everglow Manor. Michael brought Caroline there and said. “Ms. Lewis, you can remove your veil on your own.”

Caroline did as told and soon noticed Michael looked at her without any reaction. She realized then that the Ziegler family. must not be bothered about who the bride was as long as there was one.

“Ms. Lewis, you can call me Michael. You’ll be in charge of taking care of Mr. Ziegler from today onwards. You’re here to turn Mr. Ziegler’s luck around, so remember your place. Understand?”

“Yes, Michael.”

Caroline knew what the point of the marriage was. To put it bluntly, it was a superstition where a woman, who was a good match through fortune-telling, got selected to marry and take care of a person in a coma.

Yet, she soon heard smashing sounds from the second floor when Michael brought her upstairs.

As soon as Caroline opened the door to the room, something came at her before she could have a good look.

Luckily, she knew how to fight and reacted quickly. She managed to dodge the incoming glass ashtray and even caught it.

She looked around the room and saw that the floor was a mess.

At the same time, there were two doctors and three nurses in the room. All of them were working together to control the struggling man on the bed.

“Hurry! Prepare the sedative!” one of them said.

Caroline had an urge to laugh as she watched the medical staff fumbling frantically. She thought, “I guess Quintin Ziegler is really a legend. People say he’s in a coma and doesn’t have long to live. Yet, here he is, thrashing around like a wild beast as soon as he opens his eyes.”

At that moment, a nurse came over with a shot of sedative. She was getting ready to inject it into Quintin when the latter s d it from her and stabbed it into the male doctor’s armL

Chapter 3

“Argh!” the male doctor cried out in pain and blacked out on the floor the very next second.

At the same time, Quintin also threw a punch at the other doctor, forcing the latter to step back. The nurses were stunned by what happened and dared not go closer to Quintin.

That was when Quintin pulled out the IV on his arm and supported himself up on the bed with his arms while panting.

He was all out at that point. Not only was he acting aggressive, but he was also very dangerous. No one in the room dared to step forward nor make the slightest move.

Silence befell the room, and it felt like the tension was drowning them for a split second.

Finally, Michael had no choice but to break the silence. “Mr. Ziegler, Mrs. Ziegler has chosen the Lewis residence’s daughter to marry you and bring you good fortune. She’s responsible for looking after you so that you’ll recover faster”

As soon as he finished his sentence, he nudged Caroline slightly and signaled her to go forward.

However, Caroline had only taken two steps when the hysterical man in front of her hollered, “Get out! All of you!”
