I’m sorry, Mommy! I really didn’t mean to… 

Chapter 26 

Lying on the ground, Cayson looked at the ashes on the ground and was heartbroken. He had done something bad though 

out of kindness. 

“Cayson!” 

Riley and the others all had no idea what to do as they were too shocked to make any reactions. 

Mayson shook his head helplessly when he saw his little brother making a blunder like that. 

Caroline walked over with a frown. She helped her son to his feet to see if he was hurt. Then she glanced at the ashes on the ground. 

Tears rolled down her cheeks. She was devastated as well. 

However, it was her son who spilled the ashes, and she couldn’t beat Cayson up for that. 

“I’m sorry, Mommy… 

All Caroline could do was scoop the ashes back into the urn with her bare hands. 

Guilt–ridden, Cayson cried out, Tm sorry, Granny! I didn’t mean to do this to you. I’m

Riley grabbed a tool and was about to squat down to help, only to hear Caroline suddenly let out a scream, gesturing for him to stop. 

“No, Riley! Don’t touch it!” 

Riley paused, thinking Caroline wished to do it on her own. However, what Caroline did next surprised him. 

She raised her hands and smelled the ashes on them. Again and again, she repeated the action. 

Cayson, Mayson and Riley all felt weird at that. “What kind of fetish is that? What’s so nice about the ashes?” thought the three of them. 

After sniffing it over and over again, Caroline ultimately displayed an unbelievable expression. “No, this can’t be…” 

Clueless about what was happening. Riley queried curiously, “What’s wrong, Ms. Lewis? Is it because it got tainted by the soil? Should I just handle it with some tools?” 

“No! Don’t!” 

Caroline waved her hand to stop him and exclaimed in a stern tone, “These aren’t my mom’s ashes! Something’s not right!” 

With her good sense of smell, Caroline figured there was more to it than met the eye. 

“Huh? What are they, if not Mdm? Thompson’s ashes?” 

Riley portrayed a surprised visage on that note. The two children also widened their eyes and gaped at their mother on the ground. 

Caroline twirled the substance carefully with her fingers and finally piped up, Lime… These are all lime.” 

“Lime?” 

Astounding, Riley and the workers were rendered speechless by that conclusion. He leaned over to the ground and smelled it as well. Indeed, it was the smell of lime. 

“What’s going on, Ms. Lewis? How did it end up like this?” 

Riley couldn’t understand. Likewise, Caroline didn’t know the reason either. She only ordered, “Quick! Get me some water!” 

“I’m on it!” 

By the time Riley brought a bottle of mineral water, Caroline had poured some of the powder into a small container before adding some water to it. 

Soon enough, the mixture began to boil there and then. It was evident that those were lime, for they also emitted white smoke and heat after coming into contact with water. 

Staring at the mixture in the container, Caroline announced, “It’s definitely lime!” 

That was logical because the mixture of lime and water would have a chemical reaction, producing calcium trioxide,

namely slaked lime, that would raise its temperature to the boiling point before releasing vapor and heat.. 

When Caroline said this, she appeared to be thinking about something. Perhaps she was wondering how her mother’s ashes had turned into lime. 

It was all thanks to her son, Cayson, who had fallen down to the ground and led to this discovery. Otherwise, she would never know that her mother’s urn wasn’t filled with ashes. 

“Mommy, what happened?” 

Cayson raised the question, scratching his head the whole time. 

At that moment, Caroline wore a grim look and told her son, “Cayson, Mayson, there’s something wrong with Granny’s ashes. I have to go find out the truth. I’ll send you two home first.” 

“All right, the kids agreed. 

Caroline then got her subordinate to drive the children home. After that, she instructed Riley, “Take the um from the ground and get moving. Now!” 

With that, Caroline and Riley returned to the columbarium again. 

Kicking open the door to the administrative office, Riley grabbed the administrator by his collar and shoved him against the table. 

Before the administrator could realize what had happened, he was so frightened that he raised his hands high up to surrender. “Can we talk this out, sir? Don’t hit me, please…” 

“Listen carefully! Ms. Lewis will ask you a question, so you’d better tell the truth. If we find out you’re bluffing, you can kiss your fingers goodbye right here!” 

Thud! 

A knife was stabbed on the table, only two centimeters away from the administrator’s finger. 

The administrator trembled with fear. “Ah! I wouldn’t dare… to lie to Ms. Lewis… Ms. Lewis, I’ll tell you everything I know!” 

Caroline approached him and placed the urn on the table in front of him. “This is my mom’s urn. I picked it up from here a while ago. But, I checked and found that the content wasn’t her ashes but plain lime! Tell me. Have you done anything to my mom’s ashes?” 

Caroline slammed her palm on the table. Her gaze was inundated with murderous intention. 

“No, no, no… Ms. Lewis, it’s impossible… We’ll never touch the urns stored here by our guests. As long as they’re placed. here, it’s our duty to keep them safe. Without permission, we wouldn’t touch them. This is the rule of the columbarium.” 

The administrator was scared out of his wits. His legs were even shaking violently. It seemed like he wasn’t lying. 

“So, is it possible for the person who sent the flowers to do something to it?” 

Caroline hurled another question as she wondered whether the bouquet of jacaranda had anything to do with the disappearance of her mother’s ashes. 

“No… The flowers had to be placed outside. Also, there’s a lock to the storage of the urn, so it’s impossible.” 

“Can you guarantee that my mom’s ashes have never been touched at all ever since they were kept here?” asked Caroline. 

“Yes, I can… I can guarantee you that… Nobody could’ve touched it. We even have surveillance cameras installed. Besides, I suppose no one would want to move the ashes.” 

Generally speaking, no one would have the intention of moving the ashes of the deceased, for it was considered ominous. 

Caroline continued the interrogation, asking. “In other words, this urn has been placed there, untouched, since last year. Am I correct?” 

“Yes… Yes!” 

“Fine. How many years have you been working here?” 

“Six… Six years…” 

Caroline gestured for Riley to let go of him before giving an order. “Check for me who sent my mom’s ashes here.” 

The administrator took out a few thick register books and quickly checked them according to the time of Lydia’s death. After a while, he told Caroline, “It’s… It’s Harry Lewis who sent it personally. Look. This is his signature, so it could only be 

him.” 

Caroline examined the signature on the book. It was indeed her father’s. 

Chapter 26 

The date was August 6th, five years ago, which was the death anniversary of her mother. 

“Check the surveillance footage as well. I want to know who has visited my mom recently.” 

Caroline wouldn’t let go of any traces leading her to the truth. 

Having no choice, the administrator retrieved the surveillance footage and replayed it. He found out that a man decked in a black hat and a long windbreaker had come yesterday afternoon to pray to Lydia. That man even left a bunch of jacaranda before departing. 

Since the man was wearing a hat and a mask, his face couldn’t be seen clearly, much less identifiable through the footage. One could only judge by his figure that he might be between 20 and 30 years old. 

“Who on earth is that mysterious man?” Caroline pondered. 

Alas, she had no idea for the time being. Before leaving the place, she warned the administrator coldly, “Your fingers are safe for today! You’d better make sure that every word you say is true! If I find out that it’s your fault for misplacing my mom’s ashes, I’ll raze this place to the ground and make you guys perish with my mom!” 

After dropping those threatening words, Caroline spun on her heels with Riley. 

The next target on her list was her own father, Harry Lewis.
