Chapter Twenty

Flint drove down the highway. Once Eve calmed down, she fell asleep. He had buckled her into her seat and covered her with his jacket before he began the journey back to StarLight territory. He had been driving for two hours when his mate finally awoke, and the entire time memories had been haunting him.

“Where are we?” Eve probed as she sat up and looked around.

“At the base of the mountain.” Flint answered.

“I’m sorry... About everything.” She mumbled, fiddling with her sleeves.

“Don’t be. Everything is okay.” He placed his warm palm on her thigh.

“I don’t know what’s happening to me... I don’t think this is normal just because I’m pregnant.” Eve explained her thoughts.

“The Alpha power gets stronger with each generation. My wolf and I have both struggled with it since I was barely twelve years old. My child will have even more. Right now, you’re... Making that power.” Flint answered with the words he had been mulling over.

Eve nodded, thinking deeply. She felt like herself again but she worried about the next time she would feel overwhelmed.

“I have certain things that I do. To control it. I want you to try some of them.” He stated.

“Like what?” She asked with obvious interest.

“I run for hours every week. Every chance I get, I let my wolf take over. It keeps him content. Or... More content.” Flint explained.

“Okay. I already run a lot, though.” Eve nodded.

“Then try running even more.” He stated simply.

“Done. What else?” She probed.

“You need an outlet for your aggression. You need to fight.” Flint answered.

“Fight who? Not the trainees. I don’t want to hurt anyone.” Eve shook her head.

“If you won’t train with the others, I’ll train with you at home.” He shrugged.

“No... I-”

“You can’t hurt me, baby.” Flint chuckled, interrupting her. “You have a pup inside you that is very powerful, but Alpha wise; It's just a pup.”

"Okay." Eve nodded skeptically.

"You also have to stay well fed. I know you are already trying with the all-meat thing and the pregnancy. Still, the better you eat; the more docile you'll feel no matter what form you're in." He thought aloud.

"Tell me how you learned all this? Super secret Alpha training school?" She smiled at him.

"My father taught me some. Others; I learned myself." He again dived into his memories.

"What are you thinking about so hard?" Eve took hold of the hand he'd placed in her thigh.

"When I get angry or emotional, I lose control. It's not exactly the wolf I lose control of. It's more like, we lose control of this force. This strong, angry... Force." Flint reluctantly answered.

"I... Yeah?" She nodded.

"Let me tell you a story." He began. "When I was twelve I was at some event with my parents. I think it was the blood moon gathering."

Eve caressed his hand with her thumb. Her every movement lulled him into kind of peaceful calm as her warmth washed up his arm.

"I got into an argument. It was over something stupid. I think it was about an earlier training session. I can barely remember why it happened." Flint paused. "I attacked a boy. He hit me and I became a wolf. I knew, even then, to stop. Not to hurt him... But I couldn't sop it. It was like I was watching myself and my wolf was right there with me."

"Was the boy okay?" She asked.

"Yes and no. He recovered but he has scars on his chest and stomach. You know him actually." He shook off the thought.

"Who?" Eve asked curiously.

"Duncan." Flint replied.

"Duncan? Head trainer and captain of the warriors, Duncan?" She furrowed her brows.

"One and the same." He nodded.

"That explains a lot." Eve rubbed his hand. "He recovered well. It was okay."

"That time, yes. But there have been times; I have done irreparable damage. Somethings... There are somethings you can't take back." Flint stated in a flat tone.

"I know." She replied in a soothing voice.

"My father and I got into an argument. A simple argument. We were in the foyer by the front door. I turned. We broke the door."

Eve could feel Flint reliving the memory as he spoke. It pained her to watch him.

"He turned on the porch. We fought to the road. The neighbors came out and warriors stationed at the gate. Soon there were wolves gathering to watch us. I tried to stop. My wolf- We..." He took a deep breath. "I threw him into the power pole by the driveway. He will never again walk without a cane and running in his wolf form is... Painful. It always will be."

"I know. He's okay though, love. Everything is okay." She wanted to comfort him but she couldn't deny his words.

"Listen, I know this is more power than you've ever felt. I get that much. But we still need to talk to Doctor Mills and Joshua. You passing out is not something that can keep happening. Okay?"

"Okay." She agreed.

"Joshua is researching that damn legend. I hate how ominous it sounded. We need more information. I'm going to athenaeum tomorrow morning after we see the doctor." Flint touched the radio.

"What are you doing now?" Eve probed.

Flint held up his index finger as a beep sounded over the speakers.

"Message to Blair." A female voice repeated him. "Order BBQ from Sam's. Have it delivered to my house at seven. Twice the usual order."

Again the voice repeated him.

"Send." Flint stated.

"Message sent to Blair." It again repeated the message.

"Ah, I see." Eve smiled once the speaker went silent.

"Well? Don't tell me you aren't hungry. Because I am." He shrugged.

His phone beeped with a text. He again messed with the screen of the radio.

"Message from Blair. Yes, Alpha." The voice spoke without inflection.

"Message to Blair. Thank you. Take the night off." He stated.

The voice repeated the message and again Flint sent it. Eve smiled and nodded. Watching him do the most mundane things always brought her some sense of content calmness.

"What are you smiling at?" Flint poked her forehead.

"Nothing, Alpha." She playfully swatted away his hand. "Just you."
