Chapter 343 An Interesting And Dangerous Woman

Caesar was mindful of Charles status as an elder, so the former said nothing in response

Gerhardt Rotundum, who was chattering with a few dukes in the distance, happened to notice the scene on the other side.

His face twisted into a stern look as he marched over. "Vidar, have you forgotten about your lowly status? What makes you think Caesar should respect you?"

Charles scowled harder with displeasure when he saw Gerhardt approaching "Lord Gerhardt, don't forget that Her Highness took me in as her son. That makes me nominally an elder of Caesar." Gerhardt's expression clouded over dramatically when he heard that. Charles was not wrong, so the former merely let out a contemptuous scoff before storming off with his glass of champagne.

At the side of the resplendent banquet hall was a violin band. The melodious music that came from their instruments quickly dispelled the negative atmosphere from carlier.

Caesar, on the other hand, only had eyes for Gwendolyn. Fixing his mesmerizing blue eyes on her, he held his hand out as a gentleman would and asked, "May I have the honor of inviting the beautiful Ms. Harris to a dance?"

Gwendolyn had just parted her lips to give her answer when Charles stepped in. "Don't push it, Caesar. How dare you invite my partner to a dance?"

He shot Caesar a warning glare and held his hand out to Gwendolyn.

"Gwen, things look rather exciting on the dance floor. Let's join them."

Gwendolyn's eyes darted between the two men's hands before she grabbed them by their sleeves and placed them in each other's palms.

"I don't know how to dance. Why don't you guys go without me? I need to go to the restroom, anyway. I'll be back soon."

Worried about her being alone, Charles offered, "I'll get Jonahi to go with you. The palace is too big, and you might get lost easily."

A frown instantly appeared on Gwendolyn's forehead. "Don't you think it's weird to make a grown man like Jonah follow me to the restroom? I can find my way. At most, I'll ask the maids for directions." "But..." Charles could not bear to let her go alone, so he offered, "I'll go with you, then. I'll wait for you. outside."

Nico, who had been silently tailing them, held his breath. Charles is too vigilant. He's not easy to fool.

Gwendolyn was racking her brains for an excuse to decline without arousing Charles' suspicion when Kylie's personal maid suddenly showed up. "Mr. Vidar, the crown princess would like to speak to you." Seizing the opportunity, Gwendolyn chimed in, "It must be an urgent matter. You'd better hurry. I'm just going to the restroom. What else can I do? Escape?"

There was a conflicted look on Charles' face, but he still gave in. "Be careful. I'll be back soon."

Gwendolyn nodded in response.

With that, Charles left with the maid

As soon as he was out of sight, Gwendolyn approached Caesar and asked, "Where's Lord Gerhardy Please bring me to him I have something to discuss with him"

Sensing she meant business, Caesar answered solemnly, "This way, Ms. Harris"

Gerhardt had been waiting in the lounge for a long time.

When Gwendolyn entered it, Nico paced the hallway nonchalantly to keep watch.

Seconds later. Caesar, who was dismissed by his father, stood outside the door and chatted with Nico.

Meanwhile, Gwendolyn greeted Gerhardt politely in the room, "Hello, Lord Gerhardt. Time's of the essence here, so I'll keep things short."

Sitting elegantly in the seat, Gerhardt nodded for her to continue.

"I'm sure you've looked into my background, considering the fact that you're willing to see me. Our collaboration is simple. I'll help you get Chanaca's duty-free trade privileges from my brother while you help me get what I want. It's a mutually beneficial deal."

Gerhardt smoothened his mustache and stared intently at her with his cloudy eyes.

"As you can see, I'm the duke and the husband of the crown princess. With a unique status like this, I have to say I'm not particularly interested in things like duty-free trade privileges."

Flashing a confident smile, Gwendolyn uttered, "There's no need to beat around the bush with me, Lord Gerhardt. You've been controlled by the crown princess for half of your life. Getting this privilege would mean you're secretly free from her in terms of finance. Soon, you'll be free from her power, too. If you find this offer not attractive enough, I can help you kill Vidar."

Gerhardt narrowed his eyes in confusion. "He's going to be your husband soon, yet you want to kill him?" I can't believe there are women who'd want to turn themselves into a widow on their wedding night. How ruthless.

Gwendolyn did not bother answering that question. Instead, she asked, "Vidar's existence will forever be an ultimate form of insult to you. Shouldn't you be delighted that I'm offering to kill him for you, Lord Gerhardt?"

Her words elicited a hearty laughter from the man. "Hahaha! This is interesting. You're an interesting yet dangerous woman. Very well. I'll accept your offer. What do you want?" Gwendolyn's lips curved upward as her eyes glinted with determination.

"I just want the Super Antiviral stored in the palace's storehouse."

In the meantime, Nico and Caesar in the hallway clicked relatively well with each other.

"Mr. Caesar, don't you think I'm ugly? Why are you chatting with me without being disgusted by my face?"

fault." Caesar observed his companion's face in detail again. "You're ugly, I have to admit, but our parents ones who gave us our looks. It's a flaw you were born with, so it's not your Nico chuckled and cast Caesar a curious gaze. Hearing such an honest yet kind comment was a first for the

former.

Caesar continued, "Besides, the fact that you're Ms. Harris bodyguard means there's something special about you."

"Something special?" Nico held in his laughter and spared no effort to make a self-deprecating joke "Maybe I'm exceptionally ugly compared to other bodyguards"

That joke put a smile on Caesar's face. They continued chatting amicably, filling the hallway with a lively atmosphere.

Not long after, the door was pushed open.

Nico immediately stopped chatting and walked over to find Gwendolyn exiting the lounge with a grim expression.

Sensing something was not right, he asked softly, "Ms. Gwendolyn, did Lord Gerhardt decline the offer?" Gwendolyn merely shook her head.

She had no intentions of explaining the matter in public. "Let's go. Charles must be looking for me."

When Nico studied the look on her face, he figured something unexpected must have happened. Although he said nothing, he felt his heart sink to rock bottom. Charles had just exited Kylie's lounge when Gwendolyn returned to the banquet hall.

She was sitting alone in a corner and sipping on a glass of juice with, surprisingly, no one approaching her. The sight of that sent a wave of relief into Charles' heart. "Gwen," he called out with a smile. Upon approaching her, he informed her in a low voice, "Mother will be announcing our marriage date later, so we'll have to go on the stage. Don't worry. You'll just have to stand beside me."

Gwendolyn said nothing in response, an expressionless look plastered all over her face.

Charles, on the other hand, was in a good mood. Oblivious to her lack of enthusiasm, he continued mindlessly, "I know you said your household registry's still with your father. It's okay even if we can't get the marriage certificate now. We can have the wedding first and get the certificate processed when we return to Chanaea. What do you think?"

Masking the disgust in her eyes, Gwendolyn answered flatly, "Why bother pretending to ask me when you've already made the arrangements? Just do whatever you want."

Her not refusing delighted Charles even more.

Noticing the juice in her glass, Charles poured a glass of wine and gave it to her. "The atmosphere's great tonight. How can you not have some alcohol? This is made with Erihal's best grapes. They're not exported and are only meant for the royal family. Have a taste."

Gwendolyn did not bother looking at him. "I don't want to have alcohol. I'm having a slight cold."

my

"A cold? Are you unwell?" Charles quickly removed his coat and draped it over her skinny shoulders. "It's

y fault. It's gotten colder these days. I'll make sure to be more attentive next time and not make

you

fall

ill."
