I walked through a moonlit forest as snow fell lightly, but I didn’t feel the cold. The soft power under my feet moulded silently to my steps, and I smelled the clean pine for miles around me.

Peace, I thought with satisfaction.

I noticed a single candle flame burning in the stark shadows of the towering trees in the distance. I thought to run away, but for reasons I didn’t understand, I continued forward. It seemed to be the only direction I could move.

As I drew near, I saw the figure of a woman dressed in white robes, her head covered by a dark cowl. Cradled in her palm at her breast was the candle.

I am here, she said.

I could not see her face, but the sound of her voice echoed in my mind as powerfully as the bells of the church tower. I said nothing in return, but her declaration filled me with intense dread.

I am waiting to come forth, she said.

I stopped my advance and stared in wonder. I couldn’t quite see the woman’s face in the shadow of her cowl, but the candlelight’s reflection in her eyes was unmistakable.

“Who are you?” I asked.

Above my eyes, the remnants of clouds broke, and the unguarded moon blazed through the trees. The shadows of the forest contrasted to abscond every detail within them. I blinked my eyes wildly, searching for the woman, but I couldn’t see her.

Then I heard it all around me—the deep tremor of a terrible growl. Massive lungs pushed hot air through the throat of a beast. The ground seemed to tremble under my feet from the magnificent sound. And then it stopped as I drew in a breath to gasp in fear.

I realized the growl was the sound of my voice.
