EPILOGUE

FIVE YEARS LATER

“Dad, her name is Alana.”

I say to my father, who’s quite surprised to know, on his wedding day, that the woman he’s getting married to has a different name. But he’s quite cool with it, which comes off as surprising to me. “But I liked Cherry better.” Fredrick Martin wraps his arms around his wife to be. “Did you, did you really?” Alana asks whilst raising an eyebrow. “No.” My father laughs out. I smile at the couple. “Um, I’m going to go get the rings from my purse.” I exit the room but take a few steps back to peek in at the couple. They’re happy and lively and smiling. It’s like they complete each other. Alana was the fitting piece to my dad’s incomplete life.

The wedding proceeded smoothly. I saw Alana’s father, who I’d never seen before. I saw Corah as well, who was just as excited as she had been on the first day I met her. She’d pulled me into another of her tight, crushing hugs but this time I welcomed it. She was family and because of that, she was important to me.

Alana walked down the aisle, with her father by her side. He was a quiet man, offering warm smiles to those around him and wider smiles with even more warmth to his wife, daughter and surprisingly, me as well. And when Alana finally said the words ‘I do’, her dream was complete and so was my father’s. Their lives were intertwined together. But as Alana walked down the aisle again, with her husband by her side, she quietly approached my side, whispered in my ear, shot me a wink and walked off, waving the flower bouquet in her hand. I, on her other hand, was frozen. Alana’s words were shocking and a surprise to me. Maybe it was because I wanted this day to arrive so much that I couldn’t believe it had finally arrived or maybe because I didn’t expect this day to arrive at all. I didn’t know.

Before I knew it, I was holding on to my gown to prevent myself from tripping and running across the field, away from the crowd. Someone special is waiting for you; I heard Alana’s words in my head as I ran. He says he missed you, I run as fast as I can. Go find him. Though she didn’t specify where he was, I seemed to know very well where he would be. My heart’s thudding in my chest. My throat’s parched. My eyes are patiently waiting to view the one person they’ve been deprived the sight of. My hands are itching to touch him, hug him, and hold him. And then slowly, I slow down. I see someone leaning against the tree. Someone, who is like always, dressed in black.

He turns around and my lips twitch upwards.

“I’m right here, you know, you can run over and hug me if you want.” He says, a smirk playing along his lips. “I think I ran enough, I’m quite tired,” I say with a smirk of my own. “You look beautiful today, Martin.” He says, arms folded. I don’t say anything because the pink on my cheeks is enough of a reply. “Did you miss me?” He questions. “I did...” I trail off, walking just a little bit closer. “Enough to accept a ring?” He questions. I roll my eyes. “I did miss you...but I’m still not going to get married to you so don’t think of getting down on one knee or anything...” I say. “Who said anything about marriage? I was thinking of more like a promise ring.” He’s teasing me. I roll my eyes again. “It’s precautionary, so you don’t get any ideas...” I say in my defense.

“Speaking of marriage...” He pauses. “I know it’s a long time away, but, I think I might love you too much to wait...” He shakes his head. “You think you might love me?” I ask out loud. “Well, then, I think I want to go back and ignore you for the rest of my life.” I turn to leave. A hand on my arm stops me from doing so. “Why are you upset?” He questions, concern lacing his voice.

“Because I really do love you,” I say, eyes gazing into his hazel orbs.

He clears his throat, a tinge of pink appearing on his cheeks. “Still can’t control the blushing?” I raise an eyebrow. He turns his face away from me and I step to the side, catching his eyes again. “Now, now, don’t be shy. It gives me immense satisfaction to know that I can make you blush.” I say, laughing slightly. “And it gives me immense satisfaction to know that I can make you blush.” He says, holding me in his arms. I waited for this day so long and it was finally here. Finally.

“I love you, Faye.” He says, forehead resting against mine.

“I’m not confessing again,” I say to him. “Oh, come on, just one more time.” He pleads. “No.” I refuse while smiling. “Just once more.” He says. “I...love...you-” I don’t get a chance to say his name before his lips are on mine. And like always, we’re the perfect matches. I show him that by wrapping my arms around him and pushing myself closer. And then we slowly break apart, smiling.

“I love you, my demon boy,” I say once more. He smiles, holding my hand.

“So much for starting on a clean slate huh?” He says. I slap him on the arm. “Speaking of which, we need to start again,” I say. “What?” Zylen questions. “If you remember clearly, our meeting wasn’t exactly pleasant or ethical for that matter,” I say, cocking an eyebrow. “So, yes, we need to change that,” I say. Zylen still looks confused. “I came back from a war, we met after five years, we kissed, and now you want to start over?” Zylen asks out loud. I ignore him.

“Hello. I’m Faye. Faye Martin of the mortal world.” I say, extending a hand towards him. He looks down at it and chuckles lightly before grasping it. “Hello Faye Martin of the mortal world, I’m Zylen King – Ruler of a demon Kingdom. A pleasure to meet you.” So he still was King. I guess that gave me a vague idea of what happened at war. He plants a kiss on the back of my hand and then abruptly pulls me to him, wrapping an arm around my waist. “Now, if the introduction time is over, I’d like to get to know you a bit personally,” Zylen whispers in my ear. I laugh, pulling myself out of his hold, running away.

“Sure, that is, if you can catch me first,” I say. “I have to warn you though, I’ve gotten quite fast at running,” I say teasingly. He looks at me with amusement like he can’t get enough before crouching slightly. “Okay, then Martin...” He says lowly. I see hazel turn purple and unknowingly, I feel the color of my eyes change as well. I smirk at him.

“...Challenge accepted....”
