Chapter 78 Confirming You’re Fine in Person 

Barry calmed down, glancing at her before snorting heavily!

*Your grandfather has only been gone for a few days. As a descendant, have you forgotten what he said on his deathbed? Only Hope can be the Valence family’s lady!”

“Are you, an unfilial child, even worthy of entering the family?!”

Barry, took the opportunity to spit at her! He then looked at me and respectfully said, “Mrs. Valence, I’ll leave first. You should go in soon too to prevent any random person from hurting you!”

Afterward, he left with the servants in a manner which somehow reflected Grandpa Valence when he was alive.

Evelyn screamed, “Unbelievable! What’s all this madness!”

She was left dumbfounded by Barry’s anger, sneering repeatedly as she glared at me. “From the oldest to the youngest in the Valence family, now even a servant, have you enchanted them all?”

“Isn’t it just because you’re way too annoying?”

I retorted.

As she gritted her teeth, Elissa suddenly walked out while smiling provocatively. “Here we go again. Are you addicted to being scolded by me? Did you come home yesterday finding it satisfying?”

“You! You’re simply a shrew!”

Evelyn couldn’t argue with her, gritting her teeth. “And, who says I came to see you? I’m here for my mom!”

Elissa mocked, “Well, anyone else is better than a slut like you. Get lost!”

After that, she ignored Evelyn’s ugly look and pulled me inside.

She seemed like a mother hen protecting her chicks passionately. I couldn’t help but smile. “I suddenly realize that only you can handle her.”

She asked, “Do you know what this is called?”

“What?”

“This is called evil begets evil!”

Elissa tossed her brown wavy hair behind her shoulders, lifting her palm–sized face proudly and brightly.

Soon after, Professor Smith came to check on me again to change the medication and continue the drip.

I lay down on the bed and glanced at Elissa, “Why aren’t you going to work yet?”

It was almost ten o’clock.

Elissa touched her nose, feeling a bit guilty as she tried to smile pleasingly, “Don’t scold me when I tell you, but… I quit my job.”

I shouted, “What?!”

“You’ve left, so why should I stay there and watch that woman get promoted and flaunt her power in front of me every day?” Elissa rolled her eyes.

Her situation was different from mine; I was single with no mortgage or car loan, so I had no immediate pressure. “I dragged you into this,” I said.

“Shut up.” She stuffed a cherry into my mouth, “Do you think I quit without thinking? I’ve already figured out what to do.” 

“What?”

“It’s a secret.”

She raised her eyebrows mysteriously.

I chuckled, “You better have really thought it through; don’t deceive me.”

“Johnson!” A faint cry of despair came from outside, “Don’t run away! Give it back to me!”

It sounded like Beata’s voice.

I got anxious and sat up suddenly, but Elissa held me down. She pointed to the back of my hand, “Stay here and finish the drip; I’ll go see what’s happening.”

“Okay.”

Soon, she led a tear–streaked Beata inside.

I handed her a tissue and asked, “Beata, what’s wrong? Why are you crying like this?”

Beata kept her head low, pale and distressed due to her illness.

Elissa helplessly said, “Johnson took away her bank card.”

“Bank card?: 1

“Bank card?” I asked.

Beata replied with tears streaming down her face, “It’s the card where I saved my treatment fees. I just went to the bathroom, and I saw him rummaging through things everywhere when I came out. Before I could stop him, he found

the card I hid.”

I didn’t expect him to stoop this low. I furrowed my eyebrows and asked, “Does he know the password?”

1-1 was afraid I wouldn’t remember the password.”

Regret filled hers face, “It’s the same one as the bank card at home.”

Both Elissa and I felt helpless.

Johnson was a seasoned swindler and thief. Once he got the bank card, he’d definitely transfer the money immediately.

It was too late to report it lost at the bank now.

However, more than that, I was concerned about another issue. “Has Johnson started gambling again?”

“Yes.

Beata wiped her tears, gritting her teeth. In fact, he never really quit over the years. That’s why I didn’t dare let him know how much money you give me each month. I never thought this old bastard would dare to steal even the money that could save my life!”

“Why don’t you just divorce him? Gambling is a bottomless pit!” Elissa couldn’t hold back her anger.

I don’t know what I was thinking about, whether about how my parents had prepared an escape route for me before they died, or about those other painful years. Beyond that, tears welled up in my eyes.

I sniffed, calmly speaking, “Beata, I want to make something clear to you right now; if you’re sure about divorcing him, I’ll figure out the follow–up treatment fees for you, after all, you gave me a place to stay when I needed it the most. But if you don’t divorce him, gambling is a deep pit. You’ll have to jump in alone, because I won’t accompany you. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

Beata lowered her head in shame, repeatedly nodding. I understand. Hope, you’ve already given me a lot of money. For the follow–up treatment fees and those forty thousand dollars, consider them as me borrowing them. When I recover, I’ll definitely pay you back.”

“Okay.” I wanted to ease Beata’s stress, so I agreed.

Although her treatment fees weren’t cheap, during the three years I spent at the Valence family, I still had some valuable things.

Elissa stayed by my side in the hospital for three or four days, not going anywhere.

However, I could feel someone had bech there every night.

Sometimes it was a light kiss on my forehead or holding my hand; other times, they were just sitting quietly by the bed.

I was finally almost recovered. The doctor didn’t prescribe any more medication or drips, saying I could be discharged after a couple of days..

At night, because I had slept too much the previous days, the medicine’s effects had worn off, making it difficult for me to fall asleep. I was awake on the hospital bed, looking out at the moonlight through the floor–to–ceiling glass.

After a long time, there was still no movement.

It seemed like the past few nights were just my imagination, or perhaps a dream.

It wasn’t until the latter half of the night, when I finally felt a bit drowsy, that I heard familiar footsteps the moment I closed my eyes.

The room dimmed slightly, I could smell the woody cold fragrance on the man, faintly mixed with the smell of cigarettes.

He never used to smoke. 

As he was about to touch my hand, I opened my eyes. “Christopher, I’m sure you’ve already figured things out and wouldn’t come to disturb me again.”

He froze, a bit stunned and desolate..

Against the moonlight, he fell silent for a bit with his head lowered. His voice was filled with exhaustion as he said, “I just wanted to make sure you’re okay.”
