Chapter 13

Alpha Jordan

Seeing Cora emerge as a black wolf was more than a little unnerving. I tried to focus on her during the ensuing battle, but at some point she had managed to bite the witch’s head off…literally. She took down the wolf that charged at me, Weyland, but it was the darkness that she used to kill him that had me in shock. I wanted to run to her, but my body wouldn’t move so I did the only thing I could, I yelled for Darius. My world shattered when I watched him sink his teeth into her, the way her eyes went wide with shock and fear destroyed me. I tried to charge forward, but several of his men traced to me and held me back.

“Be still! He is going to save her, you just have to trust him!” One of his men shouts at me, trying to calm me. Darius pulls away from her, his red, blood crazed eyes are now black, but Cora’s have returned to the icy blue. They release their hold on me and my legs move before my mind even registers that I have been freed, carrying me to my mate and pulling her from Darius’s arms.

“Foolish hybrid. I won’t always be around to save you.” Darius sputters out as he wipes the blood from his mouth.

“You weren’t complaining when you were drinking from me like I was a damn juice box.” I chuckle at her sassy retort and even Darius manages to smile.

“I can’t believe you were so reckless. Have I taught you nothing, child?” She sits up and I rush to help her to her feet.

“Luca jumped in front of me…she was trying to hit me but…he got in the way.” Darius grabs her chin and gives her a reassuring smile.

“We should go check on your brother. If he is anything like you, he is probably giving his mate hell.” Darius leads the way out of the council chambers, weaving around countless corpses.

“Alpha, we found the rest of the council in their bedchambers. They have all been executed.” One of my men, Daniel, announces with a wide smile. I give him a nod and pat his shoulder firmly in silent appreciation. Cora’s eyes find Luca sitting in the foyer with Danny beside him and the relief washes over her instantaneously.

“Cora! I can’t believe you did that! You could have died…or worse!” Cora drops to her knees in front of him and pulls him into her arms.

“Hey, stop worrying, we are both okay.” I can’t fight my smile when I see how happy she is, the emotion flooding our bond is pure. When she stands, we walk through the doors into the cool night air, finding most of the wolves of the city gathered before us. Most are confused, some frightened and a few just plain curious. I take a step forward, steeling my nerves as I prepare to address the crowd.

“Your days of living in fear of the council are over. The days of lawlessness, abuse of power and injustice have come to an end. Today is the start of a new world for all of us. With the help of people who we once thought to be our enemies, we have earned our freedom. Over the coming weeks, we will be assigning an alpha to this territory, one worthy of your respect and loyalty.” The crowd begins murmuring and whispering amongst themselves as Cora takes her place beside me. I watch as she raises her hands to the sky and the clouds part, allowing the full moon to shine through and illuminate the ground around us. The crowd falls silent as their eyes land on my mate and she gives me a playful smile before shifting into her giant white opalescent wolf, not a trace of darkness tarnishing her white fur. She lets out a loud, ground shaking howl that sends the entire crowd down to their knees with their necks bared in submission. Darius steps forward and addresses the crowd as they rise to their feet.

“Your council would have you believe that the Lycan’s had all been eradicated, but before you stands the last of the Lycan royal bloodline. Coralie Velsire, the Lycan Queen. She has sacrificed everything to bring you freedom and peace. She will enforce our laws and will ensure that we remain deserving of her sacrifices.” The entire crowd as well as all of the wolves in our group shift and howl, announcing their acceptance of our position and acceptance of their queen, my mate, the untamed hybrid who stole my heart and turned my world upside down.
