Twisted Ties of Love
Chapter 299

"Brett, will you be scared if I suddenly disappear?"

"Will you be scared if you lose all contact with me?"

"Will you be scared if the next time I go to the hospital, you receive a death certificate instead of a critical condition notification?"

"And the next time you see me, I'm just a black and white photo?"

"Brett, remember what you said. Wishing you a lifetime of happiness together, and never to be parted."

Brett had a long dream where Izabella struggled in a blazing fire. The scorching flames licked at her feet as she writhed in pain on the floor, desperately trying to put out the fire by hitting the glass.

Her ten fingers were stained with blood, and bloody marks were all over the glass, which were traces of Izabella's struggle before she died.

Brett wanted to rush forward to save Izabella, but he couldn't even get close. An invisible barrier held him back, keeping them apart.

In the dream, the heat from the fire blew in his face. He looked up at the sky, which seemed stained with blood. He fell to his knees, weeping sorrowfully, as if he were trying to drain all the tears from his body.

He tried to reach out to grab Izabella, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't hold her hand. All he could do was watch helplessly as the fire burned her whole body.

Izabella, with hollow eyes and a blank expression, stared at him.

With tears in his eyes, Brett said, "Izabella, please don't leave me. I only want you. You're all I have left, please come back."

The person he didn't cherish, tormented, and once despised. Might have been the one he longed for in his past life, and silently prayed to have again in this life.

But he had her and lost her.

"I always thought you wouldn't leave. You have Niki, and you can't let go of Tiara, you remembered Presley, Amelia, and your brother after recovering your memory. I thought with so many concerns, you wouldn't leave." Brett reached out to her, tears continued to roll down his cheeks.

Izabella curled up in the fire, her lifeless gaze fell on Brett through the glass.

Brett felt heartbroken, unable to express his grief. He felt as if his body was being cut into pieces, the pain causing him to tremble.

He couldn't do anything in reality nor in his dream. Even embracing her seemed like a luxury.

"Izabella, can you talk to me? Please? Even if you scold me, that's okay." Brett said.

Izabella's gaze was hollow. Suddenly, she looked up at him. The fire around them was bright, but it couldn't light up her eyes. Her dark eyes reflected Brett's messed-up look.

She said softly, "Living is good, but because of you, I'm not coming back."

After she ended her words, her body gradually became transparent. She flickered in the fire, as if she would disappear in front of him.

"No!" Brett's eyes widened in horror; as he tried to hold her tight, he only hugged a wisp of air.

He stared at Izabella, who seemed so close yet so far away.

His outstretched hand trembled as he couldn't touch her.

Izabella revealed a relieved smile as she faded away. How cruel!

"Izabella, don't leave! Whatever you want, I'll give it to you! Even if you want me to die, I beg you not to disappear in front of me. Please don't!" Brett shouted out.

He tried to bring her back, but her figure faded and merged with the flames behind her.

At the moment of her disappearance, he heard Izabella whisper, "Brett, you should live. If you die, we'll meet again, and that would only make me feel more disgusted."

Brett suddenly woke up to a white room with the smell of disinfectant. The IV bag hung above his head, connected to his hand. The room was quiet, so quiet he could hear the dripping sound of the IV.

His face was wet, and so was his pillow. Remembering his dream just now, Brett sat up abruptly. The pain in his stomach reminded him that this was reality.

"President Windham, are you awake? How are you feeling? Do you need water?" Liam held a thermos cup in his hand. Seeing Brett sit up, he hurried over to help him.

"President Windham, you've been unconscious for several hours, you haven't even eaten. I bought some soup for you. Would you like some?" Brett had a mild stomach problem, and drinking too much made it worse. Usually, his stomach was fine with regular sleep. Still, because of that incident, it became a lingering pain.

"Where's Izabella?" Brett's face was pale, and he grabbed Liam's hand, gripping it so hard it was like he wanted to crush his bones.

Liam winced in pain but quickly replied, "She is in the morgue."

Brett released his hand and got out of bed, running toward the morgue without putting on his shoes. Liam sighed and followed with the shoes.

Brett couldn't find the morgue easily since it was hidden. As he wandered around, the only sound in the quiet corridor was his heavy breathing. Already pale, the daylight lamps in the corridor made him nearly blend into the walls.

Tears filled his eyes, the same eyes that had just cried in his dream, now wet again.

"President Windham, it's this way. I'll lead you. Please put on your shoes first." Liam said.

Like a robot programmed with just the word "Izabella," Brett followed Liam's every command. When he heard Liam would take him to Izabella, he quickly slipped on his shoes.

"Where is she?" Brett asked.

"Right here." Liam led the way, opening a door and taking them down a dark corridor to a room.

Brett looked at the closed door and carefully pushed it open, full of unease and helplessness.

A wave of cold air hit his face, making him shiver. Several beds were in the room, one covered with a white cloth, hiding the body underneath. Yet, Brett knew it was Izabella.

As he approached the bed, his already aching heart felt like a cat had gotten inside, scratching away with its claws.

Tasting blood in his throat, his trembling hand hesitated to grab the cloth. But finally, he carefully lifted the corner to reveal Izabella's lifeless body, face-to-face with reality.

Izabella was indeed lying there, and someone clearly fixed her up. Her hair wasn't messy anymore; it was neatly trimmed, and her burns were all wrapped up in gauze. She was even wearing clean clothes. However, half of her burnt face couldn't be fixed, so they put a half-face mask on her to cover up what the fire had destroyed.

Brett, staring at her dumbfounded, said, "Bella, next time you sleep, don't cover your head with white cloth, okay? You'll scare the crap out of me."
