The Wrong Woman
Chapter 526

Upon seeing Phoebe's reaction, Cole was puzzled. "What's wrong?"

Phoebe huffed again, expressing her displeasure. "Don't mention that woman in front of me. She's nothing but bad luck, and she makes me sick." Cole approached Phoebe, his tone serious. "Do you hate Fenna?"

Given Fenna's attempts to sabotage Mila's marriage and steal Nathan, it was only natural for Phoebe to harbor such intense hatred toward Fenna.

Phoebe nodded firmly. "Yes, I hate her. I really hate her."

With a hint of nervousness, Cole added, "I can't stand her either, Phoebe."

A slight smile played on Phoebe's lips in response.

Observing Phoebe's childish reaction and Cole's wavering stance, Nathan couldn't help but wonder if Cole genuinely detested Fenna or if he was simply trying to gain Phoebe's favor. Cole's reassurances eased some of Phoebe's tension. She turned to Nathan, her expression filled with confusion. "Mr. Morrison, who do you think is trying to kill Mila?"

In response, Nathan posed a counter question, "If something were to happen to her, who stands to gain the most?"

Phoebe responded without hesitation, "It must be that woman, the one who brings bad luck and makes me sick!"

Cole's eyes widened in shock. "Are you saying Fenna is plotting to murder Mrs. Morrison?"

Phoebe nodded solemnly.

Cole shook his head, a smile playing on his lips. "That's impossible. Regardless of Fenna's feelings for General Morrison, I can't imagine her resorting to hiring someone to kill another person." Phoebe's face clouded with anger as she forcefully tossed the apple into the trash. Rising abruptly from her bed, she demanded, "Leave."

Caught off guard by Phoebe's sudden outburst, Cole panicked, unsure of what to do next. "Phoebe, I only meant—"

"I don't want to hear it. Get out," Phoebe reiterated firmly. She grabbed the flowers from the vase and thrust them into Cole's arms, pushing him away with one hand. "All of you, just leave..." Nathan and Cole found themselves promptly ushered out of the room as Phoebe slammed the door shut behind them.

Cole tightly gripped the flowers, a blend of embarrassment and helplessness washing over him. Though he wished to return and comfort Phoebe, being in Nathan's presence made him hesitate. It felt awkward to grovel before a woman in front of Nathan, especially considering Cole's typically serious and composed demeanor.

Breaking the tense silence, Cole let out an awkward chuckle. "Phoebe's mood swings are quite unpredictable. She can go from calm to furious in an instant. Honestly, I'm at a loss for words." Nathan smiled wryly. "Phoebe has a lively personality. You should be aware of what can trigger her. Go back in and try to cheer her up."

Unlike Mila, who tended to keep her thoughts and feelings to herself.

She and Nathan were both engrossed in their respective work, leaving little room for each other. Their interactions were scarce, and communication between them was minimal. During their time apart, Mila rarely initiated video calls or messages with Nathan.

Consequently, Nathan couldn't sense Mila's love for him, which created a feeling of anxiety and uncertainty in their relationship.

Mila's love felt elusive and intangible, making it challenging for Nathan to fully comprehend.

He understood the common tendency for people to romanticize and yearn for what appeared out of reach.

Yet, upon attaining those desires, they often discovered that reality fell short of their expectations.

Perhaps Mila's initial passion had faded, leading her to question her emotions and level of commitment.

Cole hesitated, stealing a glance toward the ward's door.

After a moment's thought, he inquired, "General Morrison, after going through all that analysis with Phoebe, were you trying to hint at who the murderer might be?"

Nathan nodded in response. "Yes, after you've calmed her down, advise her to stay cautious around Avery."

Intrigued, Cole delved deeper, asking, "Do you suspect that Avery, Oliver's wife, is the mastermind behind all of this?"

Nathan let out a deep sigh, offering a gentle pat on Cole's shoulder and admiring the bouquet in his hands. "These flowers are lovely."

Cole glanced at the flowers, a nostalgic smile crossing his face. "Phoebe loved them, but they ended up discarded."

"Carry on," Nathan murmured, turning away.

He headed back to the obstetrics ward, stopping outside Mila's room.

Feeling despondent, Nathan stood there for a moment before turning and settling into a nearby chair. He closed his eyes, seeking solace as his mind weighed heavily. Suddenly, his phone rang.

Glancing at the caller ID, he saw that it was Fenna calling.

Deciding not to answer, he declined the call and switched his phone to silent before slipping it back into his pocket.
