Why had Santiago backed away when they had just confessed their feelings to each other?

"Hey, don't look down on me! I was once a diving champion, okay? Wait and see, I'll find that moonstone for you!" Xavier growled, figuring that if the moonstone really did exist, Leia would find it very romantic if he got it for her.
