The Transfer
Chapter 42 - Uneasy

The car ride back was silent. No one spoke a word and the only sound was coming from the radio. It was tense and emotional between everyone in the car. We had all lost someone important because of the rogues.

I gulped nervously as the car pulled up to the house. The other car had beaten us back and Blu and Hannah had already jumped out the car and were rushing towards their mates who were out towards the back of the house.

"They didn't cause any trouble. We don't have anything to worry about, right?” I asked before we all got out the car. Lila and Hallie got out the car, and Darcy sat in the front seat rubbing her head. "Rogues this close to the territory is always dangerous. They're never around for fun. They only want to cause trouble,” Darcy told me. We got out the car and I walked alongside her to ensure she was alright.

She looked pale and stressed. I could imagine why. She had lost one of her sons to rogues, she had lost a daughter in-law too. She'd been through hell and back.

Seeing rogues probably set off a variety of emotions that made her on edge. I hoped that Al was around so he could comfort her. She needed it.

The snow crunched beneath my feet. I walked cautiously, watching the adults huddle together in a group. The oldest of the three brothers was Nicolas, and he noticeably towered over the group of adults standing around him.

As I walked towards where Liam was standing with Leon and Cass, I noticed the stressed look on Liam's face. He looked uncomfortable and uneasy. His beast was close, on edge.

I felt the wind get knocked out of me as I flew through the air and landed hard on the snow. A furry body landed on top of me and I wheezed out.

Lucas’ wolf was standing over me, a playful look on his stupid face. I grinned and coughed. My body ached, but the pain eased quickly.

"I think you broke my back!" I laughed at him. His beast looked proud that he had taken me down. Lucas suddenly flew to the side and tumbled hard on the ground. I turned my head and saw Liam's elevated foot. He had kicked Lucas away.

"What's wrong with you, moron? You could've hurt her," Liam scolded him. He had a fresh bruise on his jaw, a bruised and cut eyebrow and a cut on his cheekbone. He must have been sparring earlier. Liam grabbed me and helped me to my feet, wiping the snow off my clothes. I smiled at him.

"It's fine Liam. I'll get him back. He won't be expecting it," I said, looking back to Lucas who got up from the snow and shook out his fur. He huffed at me.

"I still owe him the ass beating that I promised,” Liam growled out before he lunged away from me and shifted. He landed right in front of Lucas and they immediately began to fight each other.

I knew that Liam was just being playful, but there was definitely a side to him that was serious. He took me serious.

I rolled my eyes at the two of them and walked over to where the adults were speaking. The three brothers looked incredibly stressed and in deep thought.

Al looked pissed and Darcy had her own irritated expression on her face. They were all bothered by the presence of the rogues.

"You don't think they're making their way here, do you?" Nicolas questioned. I looked to him, and noticed his eyes were fixed on me. He was asking me.

I felt special that he was asking my opinion. But I knew my answer would be important.

I shook my head at him. "If they were following us, we would've spotted them and smelt them sooner. They came out last minute and they were nowhere to be seen. Have you had a lot of rogue sightings recently?"

I cocked my head at them. The Alpha glanced at Christian, his Beta. They exchanged worried looks with each other before nodding.

"Three. But they were all around the borders, back in the direction of Takiani. Have you been getting any?" Nicolas questioned me. I shrugged at him and noticed the stern expression harden on his face.

"We had a group of about ten attack me and a friend while we were on a run on night. But that was about it," I replied. Nicolas let out a low growl and shook his head.

"That stupid arrogant Alpha. He's supposed to tell us whenever he gets rogue sightings or has any issues. Rogues attacking pack members is a whole other story,” Nicolas growled. Blu ran her hand over his arm in attempt to calm him.

"What about back at Terialta? You used to be pack there. Did they have many sightings?" Christian asked me. I shrugged at him again.

"Every now and then. When I was there, security was tight. My mother was mauled by a group of them and ever since we tightened security on the borders. I wouldn't know about it now. But I will say that there's something going on there," I replied. My heart was racing fast.

There was something going on with the rogues. The sightings seemed too weird to not mean something. How were they getting into the territory unnoticed and how were they not being picked up?

After Ezra and I were attacked on our run, their scent faded completely. According to Liam, the scent disappeared right after they had died. There was not trace of where they had come in from. Which made no sense. At all.

"For sure. We have to go and try to sort this out..." Nicolas said as he shook his head. He exchanged a look of concern with Christian and Mason before they looked back to me.

"Would you like to come along? You can speak on behalf of Terialta and Takiani,” Christian asked me. I felt a little shocked at his question but I quickly nodded.

Christian looked over to Liam and I stopped him before he could call out to him. Christian looked at me quizzically.

"He's Henry's Beta. He's loyal. He'll defend him at all costs. Me on the other hand... not so much,” I said lowly. The adults all glanced at each other. They were questioning my logic, but then Nicolas and Christian nodded at me.

"Alright. Let's go to my office," Nicolas said. I nodded at them and turned with the two males and walked away with them.

We were fast and walked quickly through the snow. I felt uneasy in the fact that Liam wouldn't be with me, but I knew it wouldn't work. Liam respected Henry and he would defend Henry if anything came up against him

I didn't like Henry, so I wouldn't be the same. He might had been my Alpha, but he hadn't earned my respect and until he did, I wasn't going to give it to him.

Nicolas’ office was relatively big. There was a large window that looked out over the whole pack, a big desk with papers stacked up, as well as a chair with wheels on the bottom and normal chairs on the other side of his desk.

We all sat and Nicolas rubbed his head. He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a pen and some lined paper. He clicked the pen and sighed.

"Alright. So, we've had three sightings. On the border. They were spotted by some runners but disappeared before patrols got there. There was a scent, but it lead nowhere and ended up outside the territory,” Nicolas started. I nodded as he took notes. He wrote fast and I could tell he was stressed.

There were possible threats to his family and his pack. Of course he was stressed.

"Tell us about the attack," Christian told me. I nodded and Nicolas waited to take notes.

"I was on a run with Ezra, the vampire of the pack. It was just us and we were attacked halfway through our run. There were about ten of them. They fought us but we got rid of them ourselves. According to Liam, their scent disappeared. Trackers had nothing to follow," I explained. My beast growled. She hated that the rogues got away with all the things they did.

No matter how many rogues died, they were always around. They never disappeared. They were always there.

Nicolas wrote down the notes and then sighed. He rubbed his head. "How can a scent just disappear? It doesn't work like that, even if they die."

I nodded at him in agreement and ran my hand through my hair. "That's what I've been so on edge about. But no one else seemed to want to do anything about it. Henry didn't find it a big deal, and he didn't even tighten security on the borders. He just used it as an excuse to boss Liam around all night.”

Nicolas and Christian exchanged looks with each other. They looked curious towards my words and I assumed that they didn't know about my hatred towards my Alpha.

"Lila told me all the details about how he stole Liam's throne. Plus, he runs his mouth. His office door wasn't closed one time and I heard him and another person mouthing off about how they didn't like me," I told them honestly. There wasn't any point in lying to them. I had heard the way Nicolas spoke about Henry when he found out that Henry wasn't saying anything about the rogue sightings.

They didn't like him either. It was obvious.

Christian's chest rumbled and Nicolas shook his head as a low growl escaped his lips. They both didn't seem at all impressed.

"Immature. Truly,” Christian hissed out. I nodded at him in agreement. Henry wasn't a good Alpha. He was disgusting.

"It is strange how Henry didn't seem all that stressed about the rogues in the territory. Don't you think?" Nicolas said as he wrote it down. Christian and I both nodded.

"He was pissed when he got there after we'd killed them all. But he didn't even call a meeting upon the pack to discuss it. He practically did nothing,” I said, crossing my arms.

That night was cruel. Ezra almost died and Henry let the rogues get away with it. Even though it was impossible to punish dead wolves, he could've done more.

What if it happened again? What if someone died?

"Alright. Tell me more about Terialta,” Nicolas said. I nodded and sucked in a deep breath. Talking about my mother's death was always hard.

"A few years ago, rogues somehow made their way into the pack, and got into my home. My brothers and my father were away on a father and son hunting trip of some sort. It was just her and I.

"They dragged me out my bed in the middle of the night and pulled me into the living room. They'd slashed my mother and both with silver coated claws. We couldn't even call for help,” I started. Christian looked uncomfortable in his seat and Nicolas scowled.

"They tore her throat out, made me watch, and then knocked me out. When I woke, they were gone, and my mother was dead. I didn't call for help until hours after. They tracked the scent in my home, but the scent faded the moment they stepped out the house. They looked around the entire territory and found absolutely nothing,” I explained to them. Nicolas pulled a face and Christian grunted.

"We have some of the best trackers I've ever seen. Not a single one of them was able to find any sort of scent. They were like ghosts," I said, feeling angry at it. The rogues had killed my mother and than ran. But why didn't they kill me?

"Right... so your father tightened the security on the borders? How tight was it?" Nicolas tilted his head at me.

"Tighter than ever. No one got in or out the pack without it being known, and anytime anyone had to go anywhere, they were escorted by someone. I had men follow me around for a while year after it happened, just in case I got attacked again,” I replied. Nicolas wrote it down and I sighed.

"After that, nothing was the same. It's still not the same. There haven't been a lot of sightings since. Mostly just rogues that brush past the borders,” I said and I paused. Nicolas and Christian both raised their eyebrows at me.

"When I visited last, an old friend reached out I me before I left. He told me not to return until it was safe. I didn't know what he meant and he didn't have time to explain, but a gut feeling tells me something is up..." I told the two males. It was the first time I had ever repeated it out loud to anyone and I felt queasy just thinking about it.

Nicolas wrote it down whilst Christian leant forwards.

"Do you think that maybe he knows that something is coming? An attack?" Christian asked me. I shrugged at him. I wasn't sure.

"But how would he know? Who in the world would wants an attack to happen? My pack was torn apart by my mother's death, and I'm sure Takiani was just as broken when their leaders were murdered. Everyone knows that a broken pack is vulnerable,” I rubbed my temple. My beast was frustrated. She couldn't make sense of anything that was happening.

"You've got a point. Once you break a pack's walls, they go down quicker than dominos," Nicolas said as he sighed and shook his head. My stomach knotted painfully and I sucked in a deep breath. "Maybe my friend does know something, or maybe he just has a gut feeling. But he told me strictly not to return until it was safe. There's something he knows that no one else does. I couldn't be more sure that my brothers don't know anything,” I explained to them both. The males nodded at me. "You're absolutely right. But we can't act off nothing. There hasn't been any really recent issues within the packs. There's nothing that we can do if nothing has happened. We can send out the word to Takiani and Terialta to tighten security, but that's all we can possibly do. With no hard evidence and no rogues, it's useless putting any plans in place,” Nicolas said in a dreadful tone. I nodded at him. I understood. But I wasn't calmed

"But what if another person dies? What if more people start getting killed or attacked? Imagine the issues that would come up if someone like Henry's children or Liam and the others were killed. The pack would go into a panic frenzy," I said, shaking my head. None of it made sense. I didn't understand.

"Right now, all we can do it wait, young one. As much as it does suck, we can't do anything. I'll send out word to the neighbouring territories and let their Alphas decide what to do. If there's more sightings, we can always call a meeting between the Alphas,” Nicolas told me. I grunted but nodded. What he wanted to do sucked but was better than doing nothing.

I didn't want to see another pack fall apart.

"I suggest that we keep this quiet for now. Liam is too fragile for any of this. He doesn't realise what Henry is doing and he doesn't see the truth of the situation. We can tell him our theories if things heat up,” Christian said. I nodded in agreement despite the irritation of having to keep a secret from Liam. I hated it.

"If anyone asks, we were showing you our Christmas gifts to Liam to see if you thought he'd like them. Right?" Nicolas said, arching an eyebrow at me. I nodded and smiled knowingly.

"Of course. What else would we be doing?"
