The Silver Siren
Chapter 5

Reece

It had been almost a week since the Alpha’s meeting with our nearby packs, and things were as busy as ever. Training had intensified and I had enjoyed the distraction during the day. The Lake Hills and Blue River packs had sent some of their younger, less experienced warriors to join our training sessions, and I felt that everyone had improved in several areas. It was also a chance for our own young warriors to build experience, and friendships, with the other packs. Our warrior team was one of the biggest and we had over 100 highly trained fighters who could kill on demand. My Dad was a fair and considerate leader, but he still had to be ruthless when the time came.

The warriors trained hard, and by the end of each intensive day’s training, we were all exhausted. No further attacks had taken place in the Lake Hills and Blue River packs, and we had seen no indication of any attacks to our pack, which I was thankful for. But I still couldn’t rest easy. The pack was still on high alert, but I still felt uneasy, and something still gnawed at me. I had accepted that this unsettled feeling wasn’t going away anytime soon, so I just had to get on with my day.

Our investigators were working hard with the other packs to try and get some answers, but so far had come up empty handed. So, currently, we were preparing for an invisible and unknown enemy, which sucked. I’d thought about it long and hard. Although our nearby packs were much smaller, they were by no means weak or unguarded. Someone must have sent the rogues in to test the strength of their defences. Rogues would not band together in groups without a leader, as they were mostly solitary. I had talked to my dad about my concerns, and I knew he was doing everything he could to figure it out.

After a long day at the training centre, I decided to let me wolf out for a run. Maddox has also been uneasy and needed to blow off some steam, so I made my way to the treeline. I removed my clothes and left them at the base of a large tree, then let Maddox take over. As a future alpha, my wolf was big. Pure black with a white tip on the end of my tail to show my alpha status. Once I shifted, Maddox let out a howl and took off through the trees, guided by the light of the moon. Running at top speed felt so good, and I felt some of the days tension slip away and be replaced by calm. Hurtling through the trees at top speed, blurring each side of me, with the wind whooshing past my ears, I thought of my most recent dreams. They had been getting more frequent and I was waking up hornier after each one. I seriously wondered if I could get any hornier. And Maddox hadn’t helped. My failure to find our mate had pissed him off royally and after waking from each dream, he howled and whimpered for the rest of the night relentlessly.

An hour of running and I felt much calmer and so did Maddox. Finding the large tree, I shifted and dressed. It was late now, and I realised I missed dinner as I heard my stomach growl angrily. I headed back to the pack house kitchen and hoped that I could find some leftovers.

When I reached the pack house there were still a few pack members milling about. I was hoping to find one of the Omegas still in the kitchen, but as I stepped inside, it was empty. My stomach growled in response. Rummaging through one of the huge refrigerators, I pulled out what I needed to make a quick sandwich. There didn’t seem to be any leftovers from dinner so it was the best I could do. Between learning alpha duties and training, there wasn’t much time leftover to learn to cook and a sandwich was about as complicated as I could manage. My Mom had tried to teach me a few times, but something had always come up that needing dealing with within the pack. She thought it was important to have at least some skills to impress my mate and thought that it wasn’t the females’ sole job to cook for her mate. She had always been Dad’s equal in every way and had raised me to believe the same.

As I finished putting the sandwich together and put the stuff back in the refrigerator, the strong smell of expensive perfume filled the air and my stomach churned. I closed the door to find Mikayla leaning seductively against the counter, her short skirt riding up her thighs.

“Hi,” she breathed.

Damn it, I should have just starved! Then I might have avoided the biggest mistake I ever made. I had been out searching for my mate about a month ago and returned empty handed again. I had flown through the door of the pack house, right into her, knocking her over. I hauled her back on her feet and she wrapped herself around me. When she started kissing me, I snapped. I couldn’t stop and took her to my bed.

All unmated she-wolves are attracted to power, and it wasn’t the first time she had tried to seduce me. She has been shamelessly flirting with me since we were in high school, making it blatantly clear that she wants to be in my bed. She hasn’t found her mate and she has been quite vocal about her wish for it to be me. It’s not.

Before we turned 18, Brad and I would compete for the title of biggest man-whore, and I was never short of a bedroom partner. But as soon as I turned 18, I stopped sleeping around, determined to wait until I found my mate. Three years on and I am no closer to finding her and am horny constantly. It was more difficult than I thought it would be and I lost control that night with Mikayla and now I am kicking myself. It was a stupid thing to do, and I regretted it. And it hadn’t made me feel better. If anything, it made me feel worse. Maddox was seething and had stopped talking to me for almost a fortnight.

Since my night of weakness, I’ve been actively avoiding her, which is proving harder than I thought. As the current Gamma’s daughter, she also lives in the pack house and I can't escape her. She seems to be around every corner and now thinks that she is going to be the new Luna. She’s 19 now so I know she is not my mate, but she hasn’t got the message. She’s been more and more determined to get my attention, and it seems tonight is going to be no exception.

She leaned into me provocatively and caressed my forearm. I flinched under her touch, which left my skin cold. Anger bubbled up inside me, “Not now, Mikayla,” I growled at her.

“You look so tense,” she said seductively, trying to slip her arm around my waist. I took a step back to get out of her embrace. “Maybe I can help you relax?”

“No thanks,” I smirked. I had made my feelings clear to her after our night together. It wouldn’t be happening again. She had simply smiled and walked away.

Undeterred, she leaned into my ear and breathed huskily, “Are you sure? I bet I can help loosen you up.” She squashed her breasts up against me and I got a full-on waft of her sickening perfume. She licked along my earlobe, and I shuddered in disgust. Maddox was getting angry and wanted to come out. I had to fight to control him.

I pushed my way out of her grasp, and she stumbled back against the counter. “I said no, Mikayla. It’s never going to happen. Get that into your head!” I boomed at her. She recoiled slightly and I grabbed my sandwich and left the kitchen, leaving her looking seriously pissed off. I heard her huffing sulkily as I walked away. This woman was relentless. This wasn’t the first time I had told her no, and I doubt it would be the last. When I reached my room, I made sure I locked the door. My appetite had vanished, but I forced down the food anyway. After a long day training and running my wolf, it would be stupid not to eat.

I stepped into the en suite and turned on the shower. Stepping in, I let the warm water wash away some of the soreness from my muscles and I felt calmer once I stepped out. Once I dried, I threw on some sweatpants and collapsed on the bed. I scrolled on my phone for an hour or so, nothing able to capture my interest and then switched off the light. Closing my eyes, I prayed to the Moon Goddess for a decent night’s sleep and drifted off.

It started how it always starts. Running. My wolf is running fast, the trees are just green blurs now, the wind is whipping through my fur. And there she is in the distance, white light beaming around her once again. But something was different this time. I managed to get closer to her than I had before, and a sense of calm washed over me. As I inched closer to her, the most amazing smell filled my nostrils. Coconuts and sunshine mixed together and created the most intoxicating scent. It had Maddox in a spin, yelping and purring all at once. I was still running towards her, but now I couldn’t get any closer, no matter how hard I tried. Tantalisingly close to those soft curves, it was sweet torture. And then I sensed it. Danger. But I couldn’t see anything but her. I looked either side of me at the thick forest whooshing by. Nothing but trees. Confused, I sniffed the air deeply and there it was. The foul stench of rogues filtering through her sweet scent. It was getting stronger, but I could not see any rogues anywhere. Sensing the danger increase, I tried to run faster to get to her and then…darkness.

I woke up in my bed, sweat dripping down my face, the feeling of fear lodged in my chest. Maddox was howling in my head. I took some deep breaths to calm us both. What the fuck was that? Up until now, the dreams had progressed slowly, always the same in content but giving a little more each time.

This dream had taken a surprising and dramatic turn and I wondered what it meant. What did the Moon Goddess want me to know? Was it a message of what’s to come, somehow connected to the pack in some way? I needed to know. I lay in my bed and pondered for hours without coming up with any real answers. I decided to talk to Brad about it. Although I haven’t told anyone about the dreams, I was concerned about this new element and couldn’t shake off the feeling that I was meant to have this dream. With the current real threat of attack on the pack, I needed to get Brad’s opinion on this.

I tossed and turned for the rest of the night, drifting in and out of sleep, until dawn broke. I heaved back the sheets and walked into the shower. With a full day of training ahead of me, I groaned. Today was going to suck.
