The Rise of Nix
Epilogue

The girl watched him intently as he finished the story. For all the death he spoke about, she was not scared. The man held a presence her innocent mind could not comprehend, freezing her to the chair as he told his tale.

“Is that the story you wanted to hear, child?” Deimos asked the girl as he watched humanity go about their lives, unaware of the evil he was about to unleash.

The girl’s mouth hung agape, her big eyes frozen on him as her small mind tried to make sense of what she had just heard. Blinking a few times, she returned to normal but was still silent.

“You may leave, Angelique, and enjoy the rest of the day. But just know, soon it will all crumble down as I burn this realm.”

As he told the story, Angelique had wanted to run, but something had kept her glued to the chair as she was forced to listen about love and death, Gods and monsters, and how cruel the world was. But being a child, she knew it could not be real, so she had stayed. Her babysitter was at the edge of the lake; her back turned on her charge as she focused more on her phone, unaware of what was happening. And for that, Deimos will burn this place. Humans cared nothing for each other. He had learned that the hard way, and now he was back to give them their just desserts.

Angelique shook her head as if to wake up as a few tears spilt over her cheek. Finally, her body moved, and she jumped from the bench, stepping away from him. But before she left, she turned towards Deimos and gave a faint smile.

She wiped away her tears and said, “I am sorry you lost your friend, but you can always make a new one.”

Deimos chuckled as he watched her get back to her babysitter, curiously watching the teenager scold the little girl for disappearing, finding it ironic, for it was the girl’s job to watch Angelique. As they moved away from the lake, Deimos returned his gaze towards the lake, once again admiring how far humanity had come. But for all the good they have done, worst things have been allowed to occur, far more significant than he did, yet he was banished, and they are still allowed the freedom he has craved for eternity.

Not anymore.

Rising from the bench, Deimos straightened his jacket and flexed his body. Turning his back on the lake and its calming beauty, he watched as cars sped past him, people walking with their pets while focusing more on the object in their hands than those around him. Humans have turned weak, and he will be the one to show them what true power looks like.

Strolling into the sunset, Deimos just smiled as the wheels turned in his head, thoughts gathering about his revenge. One that the Gods, and Nix, will feel well into the future.
