Chapter 39 

Selene brought her eyebrows in, as if to dare frown at her friend, Iris who was about to force a herbal tea meant for her down her throat. Iris looked serious about it as she held her chin down and pushed the cup against her l*ps. 

What was really going on? Selene wondered. 

“Iris, don’t you think something is going on here? With you?” Vance interrupted. Iris stopped as she turned her n*eck to look at him. Selene was grateful to Vance. He had interrupted at the right time, she thought. Slowly, she sat up, her face staring at Iris and Vance talking to each other. 

Selene watched as Vance stepped closer to his mate. He held her waist with one hands as he held her shoulder with another. It took a while but it looked like he was massaging her at those points. Maybe Iris was stressed, she needed to calm down.. 

“What are you doing?” Nadia asked her supposed mate. Vance stopped as he lifted his face to her. “I thought you were a little stressed and so I decided to help you calm. down. This is the technique you had always used to calm me down whenever I was on the verge of breaking down. I decided to use it on you too. Have you also forgotten that?” He asked calmly. Nadia nodded as she stood still, waiting for him to resume. She was actually enjoying what he was doing to her. She liked it very much. 

“This is a little distracting, you know. I was about to do something before you did this. You need to stop” she said as she gently pushed his hands away. She enjoyed what he was doing but not so much that she would forget what she wanted to do. 

She turned to him and smiled and then adjusted her b*dy back to where she stood with Selene before. 

I need you to open wider. Here you go. She said as she handed her the cup. “Or would you want me to pour it in for you?” She asked her friend. Selene shook her head as she collected the cup. She was about to pour it into her mouth but then, she hesitated. It didn’t feel right to her. Why was Iris making her drink what she had brought to her? 

“Why are you making me drink this?” She asked her friend, Iris smiled, “Nothing really. I just want to see your reaction and how it works. You know it’s been a while since I took herbs. Show me” Iris answered suspiciously. Her answer seemed unsuspecting but then, the weird looks she had been giving Selene didn’t go unnoticed. Selene had seen every one of them, she had just refused to acknowledge them but now, it was becoming 

serious. 

Was Iris thinking she would poison her? 

“Wait.. Iris. Are you perhaps thinking I would poison your drink? Or maybe thinking 1

might want to kill you? Is that what is going through your mind?… Really?” Selene had up from where she had been sitting as she turned to face her friend, the cup still in her hand. Her face stern and free of any expression. She wanted to be up close to read Iris‘ facial expression. Something. Anything at all… 

Iris smiled. She said she had never thought about anything like that. Selene looked at the corner of her friend’s l*ps. They were straight. Iris was definitely lying. She could tell by that. It was one thing she had noticed from spending time together with her friend, all those years. Iris was definitely suspecting her. Selene felt hurt. 

Something was wrong with her friend, or maybe their friendship. Selene wasn’t sure what it was, 

“But if you have nothing to hide, then drink from it.” She said to Selene. Selene’s eyes must have almost fallen off with the look she had given to Iris but Nadia didn’t mind. It was better to be alive than defend a friendship foolishly that could lead to her death. No 

way. 

“As a matter of fact, how about you both take a sip from it? That sounds better right?” She took a turn to look at her husband’s face. Vance stared at her a little confused but then again, Lucian was there when she was killed and she loved him so Vance didn’t matter that much. 

She snatched the cup from Selene’s hands and pointed them to Vance. “Here you go, take a sip. Since Selene can’t take a sip from it, I’m sure you can. Drink. Take a sip and swallow, I won’t mind” she said as she shook the cup again as she pointed it to him. 

Vance still had the confused look on his face as he took the cup from her hand. He uncovered the lid and looked into it. Iris also took a peek inside as the vapor that came out almost blinded her. She closed her eyes to let it hit her and then opened it when the vapor had evaporated. The tea looked a little greenish and had water like urine. It definitely looked poisonous to Nadia. Not again. 

“Drink it. You’re taking too long. Go ahead” she said again as she stopped pecking and returned to her stance. Vance nodded as he covered the lid back. He tightened it and then took the cup to his mouth. 

Nadia watched as he took he told it to his mouth. His l*ps pressed on the lid as he lifted the cup higher and straightened his n*eck. He took it up there for a few seconds and brought it back down. 

“That was fast. Are you sure you got anything in your mouth?” She asked her mate. Vance turned to her with a puffed mouth. He gave her a serious look as if to want to scold her but Nadia looked the other way. She waited a few minutes to see his reactions. but didn’t see anything.” 

She moved the cup to the next person, Selene.” Here you go. You’re next”
