The perfect timing
Chapter 7

Friday came around and today was Aiden’s important game. Like the good best friend I’m, I was going to watch it and support him the best way I can.

The winner of the game tonight will also play in the final, against the best team in our state. They won the last three years in follow and our team lost last year against them in the final. So the passion of winning this time was even bigger and desirable.

Additionally, the game was the main topic in school and Liam and Aiden wouldn’t shut up about it. Nevertheless, I was too occupied to be annoyed of their constantly talking because of one reason. Reece Matthews.

Like I already expected he also didn’t show up today, which made my even more frustrated than I already was. Where was he? Was he really ill like Kitty told me? But why would she lie to me if he wasn’t? Nothing made sense, and I thought my head would explode from all the thinking.

My thoughts were spinning circles in my mind and I didn’t notice somebody approach me until he asked me something.

“Is this seat still available?” I barely listened to the person and only nodded, a bit annoyed for interrupting my thoughts.

The game was going to start every minute, and I was starring at the field, waiting for our team to make his appearance. I was seated in one of the front rows because I was a friend of a player and I was one of the first to arrive.

Almost the whole school was here to support our team and nobody could say anything about our schools spirit.

It was really noisy and when an all too familiar voice said next to my ear. “You okay there doll?” My head snapped to my left.

Almost colliding with Reece, but fortunately he leaned back in the last moment and saved us from hurting our heads.

Then he barked out laughing, “You actually didn’t notice me sitting there for the last few minutes. Didn’t you?”

I blinked several times to adjust if I was seeing right. What was he doing here? Shouldn’t he be lying in bed or something like that?

I was also too astonished to answer him immediately and just watched him laughing.

Reece even surprised me more, when he leaned closer and closed my ajar mouth with one of his fingers, touching at the action my chin.

The spot where he touched me tingled even if the contact was just for a split second. He seemed to notice this too and yanked his hand away immediately.

Well, I think he did, but I could also be wrong.

After another few seconds I choked out, “What are you doing here?”

His slightly amused eyes met mine, and he leaned back into his seat, crossing his arms behind his head.

“I’m here to support our team like everybody else.”

“But I thought you were ill.” I pressed out, my lips turning into a straight line, not believing him.

“Yes, but I feel better now.” Reece argued and glanced at me which told me to just drop it.

Which I did because it was clear that he wouldn’t tell me more about it.

“The game is starting,” he then told me and I averted my gave away from him towards the players, who were just walking onto the field.

Liam was walking at the front, being the captain, closely followed by Aiden and the rest of the team. They all looked determinated to win the game and show their best action.

I especially paid attention towards my best friend, who was smiling with anticipation and ready to play. I felt proud just seeing him there and showed him my biggest smile when our gazes met. Then I gave him a thumps up and he returned it with an even bigger smile. We could communicate even without words and we always had the other ones back.

After that a man announced that the game would start every second and Aiden’s attention swapped to baseball.

I even forgot Reece for a second, but when I glanced to my side and saw him watching me, I was full aware of him. A breeze even blew his scent towards me and I might sound crazy, but I never have smelled something like him before.

It was a miracle I was aware of it, with all the people around of us. In my mind I compared every smell I knew and tried to find something that smelled like him.

I felt ridiculous by doing that, but couldn’t stop myself. It was a mixture of peppermint, vanilla and lavender. You would think this mixture wouldn’t match, but I think it smelt fantastic.

A guy never had such an affection like this one me and I felt kind of scared by it.

In my kind of trance I had leaned more into him and when I noticed what I was doing, I leaned even more closely and tried to act like I was doing it on purpose and wanted to ask him something.

He furrowed his brow in question at my action and I asked. “How do you know, where I live?”

This was the question I was so eager to know the truth about and he was finally there to answer it.

For a second he stared at me and I thought he would ask me what I was talking about. However his answer was nothing like I expected.

“Investigation,” he replied, biting his lip in amusement by my dumbfounded expression.

“You really did that?” I asked shaking my head in confusion.

He agreed by nodding his head and I blurred out. “What are you? Some kind of stalker?”

The guy didn’t even flinch at the tone of my voice and told my boldly. “Your personal one.”

Was he serious right now? He couldn’t be. One of the most popular guys didn’t just investigate on me.

“Your unbelievable,” I could only answer, trying to assimilate the new information he gave me.

“Look at it from this side,” he began and then added. “I found you interesting enough to want to know more about you.”

I laughed sarcastically at his explanation. “You could have just asked me, like every other normal person would have Reece.”

“But where is the fun in that?” he asked me smirking and leaning closer, which I answered with leaning back.

Then I huffed out. “I don’t know if you are plain odd or really insane?”

“Nothing of both,” he replied in the most serious tone, I had ever heard him saying.

“Just don’t think too much about it and you will be fine.”

“By the way it seems like the team is winning,” Reece told me then, mentioning with a nod towards the game.

I bite my lip guilty, here I was worrying about Reece and in front of me Aiden was playing and I wasn’t cheering for him or even watching him play.

My heart sank, and I felt bad about it. For the rest of the game I only tried to concentrate on baseball, which was harder than I thought, because my gaze landed unfortunately from time to time towards the guy next to me.

Reece was watching the game in front of him carelessly and with an unreadable expression and I couldn’t tell if he was enjoining it or not.

In the end our team barely won, but it was a fair and well played game. I jumped at the end out of my seat as everybody else and whooped and cheered.

I even whistled for my best friend and Liam and wanted to ask Reece in euphoria if he liked the game. But when I looked at the seat he was sitting in just five minutes ago, he was nowhere in sight. The place next to me was free, and I looked around to get a glimpse of Reece, but I couldn’t find him.

Did he disappear in my absence? Again I didn’t know what to think or feel about him and just made my way like the rest of the school towards the exit where I would meet with Aiden and Liam to celebrate their win.
