The perfect timing
Chapter 16

On my way towards M.E my mind tried to proceed everything that had happened in the last few days. My life had changed so much in about two weeks.

I had found out that I wasn’t the only superhuman in this world, that I only was one, because of my parents and that being superhuman could be dangerous too. Not only for me but also for the people around me and the ones I care the most about.

If somebody had told me everything I had experienced the last two weeks, I would have laughed about them and told them to see a doctor. But the new me would listen carefully now and would want to know more about the topic.

I had also changed in the way I looked at things and how I reacted to them even if I didn’t notice it at first. I was more open to new people and to let them in my life. For example Reece, Kitty and Eric, even if they just walked into it without my permission.

Nevertheless, it was also more complicated and harder because I had to lie to people I cared about and to solve the mystery about the person who attacked me. But it also was more exciting and definitely not boring, I thought as I walked into Matthew enterprise.

It looked exactly the same way as I remembered, white walls and modern. Courtney the receptionist was also there, sitting at the same wooden desk, where I met her the first time and was reading something.

She only looked up as I was standing directly in front of her desk and she greeted me with a warm smile.

“What can I do for you?” she asked me, while she put some paperwork to the side.

“I want to see Juliette Matthews,” I answered politely, though my voice had something demanding, which Courtney didn’t seem to mind or just ignored.

“Sure, she is in her office right now,” the woman told me, opening a drawer and pulling out a completely white card.

I remember her giving Reece a black one as she handed me the other one. But why was mine white?

“You know how it works?” she then wanted to know, and I nodded also surprised that she was willing to give it to me so easily.

“Highest floor,” she commented and mumbled a small “thanks”.

“You can also keep the card. It is now yours and you can use it to get everywhere,” Courtney added, but the last part in a whisper.

Was that also the difference between these cards? With mine I was able to go downstairs and upstairs? There was only one way to find out, but not this time, because I had to meet Juliette.

“Alright, thank you,” I said again, before I went into the elevator.

Inside I searched for the slot Reece used the last time and when I found it, I pulled my card through it and pushed the number of the highest level. Immediately the elevator moved upwards and in less than thirty seconds the doors opened again. It revealed a small corridor and only one room was at this floor where Juliette was sitting at a white wooden desk and reading some papers. I was only able to see her because the wall and the door consisted completely out of glass.

Stepping out of the elevator, I took a deep breath and knocked lightly onto the door. Juliette immediately stopped reading and glanced towards me. She didn’t seem surprised by my appearance and waved me inside.

“Take a seat,” she said in her calm voice, as I stood awkwardly in her office and immediately did what she said, folding my hands onto my lap.

“I’m here, because I have to talk to you about something important,” I then announced and waited for her response, which took longer than usual.

“Well, then go and tell me,” she said leaning back into her black office chair.

“Today someone broke into Nancy’s bakery. But the person didn’t steal any money, so I came to the conclusion that the person could be the same one who attacked me,” I told her and Juliette had now a thoughtful expression on her face. She was looking out of the window and her lips were pursed into a straight line.

“You might be right,” the woman answered, now looking at me.

“I was also thinking about this super human the last few days and had the idea to give you a partner who you can work with on this case.”

I nodded slowly at the idea. It was a good one, but the question was; who was going to be my partner?

I was about to ask her that question, but she raised her finger to stop me.

“But first you have to join this company,” she told me.

“The M.E?” I blurted out, and she raised one brow at my words.

“M.E for Matthew enterprise?” she asked a small smiling playing on her lips in amusement.

“I actually like that,” she added, and I smiled lightly. My idea really wasn’t that bad.

“Our real company doesn’t really have a name. But yes, you have to join the M.E first,” the woman told me.

“But I thought it was clear that I’m already a member,” I said, and she grinned, because my answer seemed to please her.

“Perfect. There not many rules in our company, you just can’t tell outsiders and you are going to be trained every week and learn how to control your power,” she explained and I nodded mentally trying to memorize her words for later.

“You will get a schedule to remind you and I would require following it.” She told me in a tight tone of voice.

“Because I’m also not going to let you wander around with your partner alone, without training and not to know how to protect yourself,” she added looking me directly into my eyes. Her gaze bored into mine and I tried to not look away because it was so intense.

“Of course.” I replied, thinking about training with all the other super humans. With her kids, Eric, Wyatt and maybe the other two people with their amazing powers.

But how would my training look like? Was I also going to learn, how to use weapons? I mean this whole company was to protect our kind and others. But I didn’t want to kill anybody, even when the thought of hurting the person who controlled Nancy’s mind was appealing.

“You are only going to make researched at first.” Juliette suddenly commented and I looked at her with big eyes.

How did she know what I was thinking about?

She laughed at my dumbfounded face and remembered me. “Don’t forget I’m superhuman too.”

“You can read someone’s mind,” I stated shocked and felt now uncomfortable at the new information and that she could probably read my mind right now.

“It’s not that easy,” she only answered, leaving me confused behind.

And before I could ask more, she dialed a number one her phone. “Courtney, please send Eric Prichard to me,” she said ending the phone call and then turned towards me.

“Like you have probably guessed is Eric going to be your partner,” she announced, and I just sat there in silence thinking.

I didn’t know how to feel about Eric as my partner. Why was he going to be my partner? And was Juliette listening to my thoughts right now? And also what did she meant with “it’s not that easy”?

A few minutes passed by and during that time none of us said anything. Luckily then we heard a knock and Eric walked in.

“You wanted to see me?” Eric asked, looking at the mother of Reece and Kitty with respect.

She nodded. “Yes, I wanted to show you your new partner,” the woman announced gesturing at me.

Eric looked for the first time at me since he had arrived. “Celia,” he said surprised, but after a few seconds a smile formed on his lips.

“Or should I say partner,” he offered, and I laughed.

Having Eric as a partner was going to be an interesting experience and probably a crazy one. But somehow I was looking forward to it.
