Chapter 53

Jeffrey frowned. “That… seems highly unlikely. Lisa has only been here for a few days. Maybe she doesn’t know Mom has diabetes.”

“She does,” Leonard said in a deep voice. “I told her.”

David started feeling guilty. “If that’s true, I won’t let the Jones and Stark families off the h ook.”

“The Stark family won’t be welcome in Queenston after this.” Leonard’s handsome face was full of resentment.

Jeffrey and Leonard spent the entire night in the hospital. Then, the following day, Melissa slowly woke up.

“Mom, are you hungry? Do you want something to eat?” Michelle eagerly approached and helped her up.

Concern spread across the faces of the three Parker men as they gathered around Melissa.

“Mom, are you feeling better? Are you feeling any discomfort?” Jeffrey asked.

David, overwhelmed with guilt, leaned over and said, “Honey, I take full responsibility. I’ll make sure Lisa pays for what she did to you.”

“Mom, I’ll divorce Lisa immediately,” Leonard said.

Unable to comprehend, Melissa asked, “What are you all talking about? How did Lisa harm me? What’s all this talk about revenge?”

She could not make sense of a single word they were saying.

Michelle said, “Mom, Lisa knew about your diabetes, yet she intentionally bought you cake. She’s trying to hurt you. She’s so

evil.”

“Nonsense!” Melissa finally understood what was happening.

Although she disliked Lisa, she did not want to falsely accuse her. She knew how capable the men in her family were. She worried that such a big accusation could implicate someone innocent.

“This has nothing to do with Lisa. Yesterday, I was playing poker at Mrs. Brown’s house. I didn’t like their food, so when I returned, I searched the refrigerator for something to eat. I found a cake in there and couldn’t resist having a bite.

“The cake was so delicious that I couldn’t stop myself. I went from eating one piece to two, and finally four. Lisa was upstairs taking a shower, and I had finished it all when she came down. She scolded me for eating it, saying it wasn’t good for my diabetes.”

Melissa paused momentarily and felt a little embarrassed. “I didn’t listen to her, but when I got up, I felt dizzy.”

The three Parker men were speechless. They had not expected the situation to unfold this way. It became clear they had wrongly accused Lisa.

Michelle did not want Lisa to have another chance to return to the Parker family and blurted, “Maybe Lisa deliberately put the cake in the fridge to tempt you. She knows how much you love sweets but shouldn’t have them.”

“Well, Lisa probably didn’t know.” Leonard felt conflicted as he furrowed his brow. “I didn’t tell her we don’t keep sweet snacks at home.”

Jeffrey agreed, “She only stayed at our place for one night. How much could she know?”

To Melissa’s surprise, even her husband did not fully support her. Annoyed, Michelle concluded, “Regardless, if she hadn’t bought the cake, Mom wouldn’t have fainted.”
