Chapter 47

Leonard dropped Stephanie off at the music hall entrance. “We’re here. You can go now.”

Stephanie’s eyes were red from crying as she said, “Leonard, I can’t bear to be without you. I’ll always wait for you, no matter how long it takes.”

There was a moment of silence before Leonard urged her, “Just go. I have to rush back to the office for a meeting.”

Stephanie choked back her emotions. She did not expect Leonard to be unmoved. Instead, she noticed a tinge of impatience in his expression.

The car sped away as she stepped out, leaving a trail of smoke behind. Stephanie gritted her teeth.

‘I will not give up,’ Stephanie thought as her gaze darkened. She had hopes of marrying into the Parker family and becoming the first lady of the Parker Corporation. When that happened, she would attract admirers wherever she went.

Leslie drove the Mercedes while her mind was a mess. A simple meal made her realize she did not know Christoper all that well. She initially planned to send Chelsea to a painting class that afternoon, but her plans had changed.

A few minutes later, Christopher called. “Leslie, where are you?”

“Lisa and I just finished eating. Is Chelsea okay?” Leslie inquired.

“I took her back to my parent’s place. We didn’t go to the painting class this afternoon.” Christopher said apologetically, “I’m sorry. I thought we could have a meal together as two families, but it didn’t turn out that way. I’ll visit your parents next time and apologize.”

Leslie opened her mouth but could not utter a word. All she felt was a rush of sadness.

“Don’t overthink it, Leslie. You’ve made sacrifices for our marriage. Go shopping with Lisa later in the afternoon and use my card to buy whatever you want. I’ll accompany you tonight,” Christopher coaxed before ending the call.

Lisa overheard the conversation through the car’s Bluetooth system as she sat in the front passenger seat. Christopher’s charm impressed her. His voice sounded magnetic and enchanting.

He was also attractive, had good emotional intelligence, and knew how to win women’s hearts. Lisa wondered if his ability to captivate her stepsister went beyond just saving her in the past.

“Lisa, why do you think he never told me about his family’s relationship with the Tannin Group?” Leslie looked at Lisa in a daze. “Do you think he’s worried I’ll be after his family’s fortune?”

“Leslie, you should just ask him directly,” Lisa suggested, analyzing the situation. “Benedict already told you about Christopher’s identity. It’s only a matter of time before he finds out. Pretending not to know might even make him suspicious.

Leslie smiled bitterly. “I just want to know who he genuinely is.”

“I understand, but you must be more cautious.” Lisa continued, “Think about it. How could Chris’s ex-wife not know her husband’s true identity when they have a daughter that age?”

Leslie was puzzled. “I don’t quite understand what you mean.”

“Leslie, human nature is complex. She’s a woman who prioritizes her interests. What do you think she wants? She probably doesn’t want Chris to remarry. If he does, there’s a chance he might have more kids.

“If that happens, her daughter won’t inherit anything from his family.” Lisa continued, “Also, Charles and the Tannin Group’s chairman are siblings, and Chris’s family has considerable shares in the company.

“So, Chris’s ex-wife might try to stop you two from having kids or even use Chelsea to mess up your relationship for her benefit.”

Leslie was stunned. After Lisa’s analysis, she felt a sudden chill down her spine.
