Chapter 36

Josephine nodded in agreement with Sebastian.

“That’s not a problem,” Grace stroked Chelsea’s head, adding, “However, I have a small request. Since Leslie is still young, I hope she and my son can wait three to four years before having children.

“Since Chelsea is still a kid, I fear Chris might unintentionally neglect her once he and Leslie have children. We should let Chelsea grow and become more sensible before considering that.”

Lisa was shocked as she glanced at Leslie, who also seemed surprised. The former knew the Tannins had not discussed this plan with Leslie beforehand.

She glanced at the surprised Christopher, who appeared to contemplate for a few seconds. Then he fell silent, apparently agreeing with his parents’ decision.

Charles said, “Leslie is twenty-four now. Waiting another three to four years would make her twenty-seven to twenty-eighth. That’s still a good age to have children.”

Josephine had long felt upset that her daughter was a second wife. Now, the Tannins’ attitude annoyed her. She said, “If you were concerned about others mistreating your granddaughter, why didn’t you let your son wait a few years before getting married in the first place?”

The harmonious atmosphere became tense, causing Grace and Charles to frown. The two had served as a dean and a professor for many years, and most treated them respectfully. Meanwhile, Leslie’s parents seemed to be ostentatious, lacking any

manners.

“Mom, Dad, please don’t misunderstand,” Christopher quickly intervened and tried to defuse the tension, “My parents simply think I just returned to the country, and my job isn’t stable yet.

“I have many things on my plate, too. If we have a child now, it’ll be difficult to handle both simultaneously. My parents have

no other intentions.”

Grace calmly responded, “I don’t mind if Leslie wants a child, especially if she doesn’t disturb Christopher’s work and handles both kids. I only have one request. Don’t mistreat my granddaughter.”

In other words, Leslie could do whatever she wanted if she was a full-time caretaker at home without interfering with Christopher’s work.

Josephine scoffed. “Since you have a request, I have one, too. You can care for your granddaughter alone since you cherish her so much. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if my daughter cared for Chelsea.

“Conflicts can quickly arise between a biological mother and daughter living together, let alone a stepmother, who’s already prone to gossip. I don’t want Chelsea bringing any trouble to Leslie at the slightest inconvenience.”

Grace responded, “All this talk boils down to Leslie not wanting to take responsibility for Chelsea, right? If not for her promising to treat Chelsea as her own, my husband and I wouldn’t have agreed to let Chris marry her.”

Josephine retorted, “If Leslie hadn’t eloped with Chris, would I have agreed to let her marry someone who’s divorced and has

a child?”

“My son has been married before, but considering our family’s conditions, marrying your daughter would also be a social

ascent for her.”

“Haha! That’s hilarious! Are you saying your family is some kind of royalty?”

Grace retorted, “You’re narrow-minded and short-sighted.”

“Mom, please stop,” Christopher tried to intervene, feeling a headache coming on.

“Mom, you need to stop, too,” Leslie’s scalp tingled. She never expected a simple dinner between the two families to turn out

like this.

Suddenly, the silent Chelsea stood up and cried, “Stop arguing! It’s all my fault for being a burden! Everyone would be fine

without me!”

Immediately after, she pushed her chair and ran away, covering her eyes and wailing.

“Oh, dear. Chelsea!” Grace hurriedly chased after her.

Christopher frowned and quickly chased after the two.

Charles lagged behind slightly. However, he glared at Leslie and said before leaving, “I wouldn’t have bothered coming if I knew your family was like this.”
