Chapter 23

“Thanks for your help, Victor, but I can walk into the house on my own,” I said as I made my way to the front entrance of Alex’s mansion.

Moving slowly in my bare feet, I held closed the ugly hospital robe I was wearing with one hand. I couldn’t believe the difference a few hours made in

my life.

Even though I was nervous, I had been looking forward to the pool party. Now I just wanted this day to end and forget it ever happened.

After almost drowning, I agreed to go to the hospital and let a doctor check me out, but I refused to stay. I wanted to go home, and I never wanted to see the wetsuit that a nurse had helped me remove ever again.

I saw my reflection in the front door glass and cringed. I looked even worse than I felt. Besides the ugly hospital robe I wore, my hair was frizzed out to maximum volume, my complexion was still pasty, and there were dark circles under my eyes.

I’ve never looked worse.

“At least lean on me, Daisy. Please,” Victor said. “You’re tired, and you’ve been through a lot today.”

I nodded and allowed Victor to help me inside. We went through the empty foyer and slowly walked toward the staircase and to my bedroom.

As we passed the door to the living room, Alex hurried out of the room toward us.

“Daisy, honey, are okay?Alex asked. “Mr. James called to tell me what that horrible. girl did to you.”

“I’m okay,” I assured him. “Victor saved me.”

Alex grasped Victor’s arm as tears rolled down his face. “Thank you, Victor, for saving my little girl. It’s inconceivable that I almost lost her today.”

Tears glistened in my eyes. After my life as an unwanted foster child with the Smith family, seeing how much Alex cared about me made me cry. I put my arms around Alex and enjoyed his affection.

Despite Alex’s illness and his countless assistants, I knew it was hard for him to take care of his business and duty as the leader while taking care of his own health. I wished I could help but I knew nothing.

Maybe that is also why Alex wanted someone like Victor to be my fiancé and help met with these things one day.

Alex was either working. resting, or having all kinds of treatments in the past few days. However, he was here for me immediately after knowing what I had been through. I was indeed moved, and his embrace was firm and comforting.

“I am so glad Victor was there. And it seems that you two get along with each other quite well now. Alex said with a smile?

Get along? Well: Was that so in Alex’s eyes?

“I guess we do. Victor answered before I did and gave me a wink.

Right. We had an agreement.

“Y.Yes. I agreed with him. “But I won’t take the chance of being caught alone like that again. Too many Alphas resent me. They don’t want to believe I’m your daughter.” I recalled Bella’s mocking voice and wiped another tear from my face.

“It’s my fault the Alpha community is reacting to you this way,” Alex said. “They are such a closed–minded and proud group that they don’t admit newcomers into their ranks easily. I need to rectify this situation as soon as possible.”

“It wasn’t your fault.” I gave Alex a gentle squeeze. “I’m just not good with people, and I’m used to the way they treat me.”

Alex stared at Daisy for a while before turning to Victor. “Do you think a formal ball and a public declaration of Daisy being my heir would help her get more respect from the werewolf community?”

“I believe it would, Alex.” Victor replied. He looked extremely pleased at the idea. I

wasn’t so sure.

The thought of being thrust into another situation where I would be the center of attention was frightening. What was I supposed to do? How was I expected to act? I would probably screw it up somehow.

“Then it’s settled,” Alex said. “I’ll inform Benson that we are hosting a ball for Daisy.” He reached for the bell pull that would summon Benson to his side.

“Isn’t her eighteenth birthday coming up soon? “Victor asked. “The end of November, as I remembered. That would be the perfect time to celebrate with a formal ball.”

“Yes, November 28th,” Alex agreed. He led us into the living room and sat down. His

complexion was more pale than mine.

“We should have the ball here,” Alex declared. “Daisy, your mother redecorated the ballroom before she died, but she never had the opportunity to use it to entertain. It’s been closed off ever since her death.”

“It sounds perfect,” I said with a weak smile. I couldn’t tell Alex I didn’t want him to host. a ball in my honor. He seemed so pleased by the idea. Yet I suspected I was going to hate it.

“Um… I’ve never been to a ball,” I said. “What…what do I do and wear?”

I’ve seen movies and television shows that included scenes from balls, but I doubted things were done the same way in these modern times.

But I was proven wrong when Benson and Jennifer answered Alex’s summons and entered the room.

“Benson, I need you to help me plan a ball for my daughter’s eighteenth birthday,” Alex said. “Have the maids thoroughly clean the ballroom, and ask the chef to create a menu

my approval.”

“Very good, sir,” Benson said. “How many guests will we be expecting?”

“What do you think, Victor?” Alex asked.

“The ball should be somewhat exclusive,” Victor replied. “If you invite only the most important Alphas in this area, I’d say three hundred guests sounds about right.

“Very well,” Alex said. “Prepare for three hundred guests, Benson.”

“That sounds splendid, Mr. Wilson,” Benson said. He pulled a small tablet from his pocket and made notes in it.

My father then turned to the maid. “Jennifer, I’m putting you in charge of having a gown and accessories made for my daughter. Work with Daisy to accommodate her preferences.”

“Yes, sir,” Jennifer replied. I could tell she was thrilled with the assignment by the smile that bloomed on her face.

Jennifer is a kind person, and I trusted her. Her being in charge of my clothing for the ball made the idea of being the center of attention a little less scary.

Jennifer always listens to me, and she has never tried to force me to wear anything that

made me uncomfortable.

But then I had a disturbing thought.

“Won’t I have my first shift that night?” I asked.

“Yes,” Alex said. “We will plan the evening around it. Just before midnight, we’ll have the moon goddess ceremony that portends an Alphas first shift. It will be a wonderful event, darling.”

“As a gesture of goodwill, why don’t we offer a gift to any Alpha whose eighteenth birthday falls on the same month as Daisy’s,” Victor suggested. “There can only be a few Alphas in this area with the same birthday.”

“I think that’s a good idea,” Alex agreed. “It may make the Alpha population more agreeable. Benson, make this happen, please.”

“Of course, sir,” Benson replied.

“What about the Betas and the Omegas born in the same month as me?” I asked. “They need a gift more than the wealthy Alphas.”

Victor sighed and then grinned at my father. “You don’t require their goodwill as much as you do the Alphas. We don’t socialize or do much business with Betas and Omegas.”

I shot him a black look yet held my tongue. Victor was a snob, but he saved my life a few hours earlier.

“I’m sure

I can afford to present them with a small token of my esteem,” Alex said. “They are under my jurisdiction and care too.” He nodded to Benson. “Assemble a team and make it happen. But keep the gifts within a reasonable budget.”

“Thank you,” I said to Alex. “And you too, Benson. What would we do without you?”

Benson gave me a rare ghost of a smile. “It’s my pleasure to serve this family, Miss. Wilson.”

“That will be all for now, Benson,” Alex said. “Jennifer, will you help Daisy to her room and see that she is made comfortable for the night.”

As I walked out the living room door, I heard my father speak to Victor in hushed tones.

“Victor, I would appreciate it if you could arrange extra security for the ball,” Alex said. “Hire plenty of the best guards you can find.”

“Why do we need extra security guards for a ball?” I asked Jennifer.

She shrugged and smiled at me. “That’s your father’s business. We must concentrate on your gown and some ballroom dances you must learn.”

“Ballroom dances,” I repeated numbly. “I can’t dance.”
