Chapter 19

When I woke up this morning, I remembered it was Friday, and a jolt of panic rushed through me. The pool party is tomorrow, and I’m already feeling jittery. But I’m also looking forward to it.

I wish I was more confident and felt like a real Alpha. It would make fitting into my new life easier. But inside, I still felt like the old Daisy.

It feels like I’m merely pretending to be a member of the dominant group of werewolves, no matter how pretty my glasses are or how much my clothes cost.

When I arrived at school, Amy was waiting for me in our usual spot.

“What’s up?” Amy asked. “You look frazzled.”

“Tomorrow is the pool party,” I reminded her. “I’m kinda nervous”

“Don’t be,” Amy said. “You’re going to have a wonderful time. It’ll be great.”

“I hope so.” I gave her a side hug. “I’m excited, and I want to go. But thinking about. what could go wrong makes me feel half sick.”

“Nothing is going to go wrong,” Amy insisted. “After tomorrow, you’ll wonder why you. were nervous.” She knew exactly what I needed to hear.

“Would you be scared if you were me?” I asked.

“Well, yeah,” Amy said. “But you’re much braver than I am. It must be your Alpha blood that makes you stronger than me. Remember, you are one of them, Daisy.”

I reminded myself of Amy’s words several times that day.

Kayla and the other popular Alpha girls sat with Amy and me every day at lunch now. I still found their conversations dull, but Amy told me to think of it as practice for the pool party.

She was right. I was learning to blend in and speak as little as possible to my new “friends.” I never start a conversation, and I concentrate on giving brief, polite responses whenever I’m asked a question.

My stutter stays under control better this way, and Amy says my reserved manner makes me seem sophisticated and mysterious to the other girls.

But my ability to reply with brief answers was put to the test today.

Chapter 191

“I would love to hang out with you at your home sometime, Daisy,” Kayla said. “I hear it’s a lovely place.”

“Sure,” I replied and sipped my chocolate milk.

“My father would like to come with me,” Kayla added. “Daddy admires your father very much.”

I shrugged. Why would Kayla’s father want to hang out with Alex on a weekend?

“Great,” she said, taking my shrug as consent. “We’ll drop by next Saturday. Daddy hast some exciting business opportunities to discuss with your father.”

I shook my head. I should have known what Kayla was up to. How can I tell her without stammering that Alex is ill and tired and that I don’t set his schedule?

“Daddy will be so happy to have a chance to talk to Alex,” Kayla droned on. “He was told Alex’s schedule is completely booked until next month and that he canceled all his weekend meetings.”

I had to speak up and tell Kayla her father couldn’t come to Alex’s home and intrude on his life like this. I took a deep breath and began.

“Ka Kayla, I. I’m not in cha… charge of Alex’s schedule.“, I said, struggling to keep calm. I was growing angry at Kayla for trying to use me. I would remember it when dealing with other Alpha kids in the future!

“Your fah… father needs to go… go through Alex’s assistant like ev… everyone else.”

The look in Kayla’s eyes was a little scary. “I thought because we’re friends, you would help me.” She angrily stabbed the food on her tray with a lunch fork.

I didn’t need enemies. Maybe Kayla could cause trouble for Alex too. I needed to try to smooth things over.

“I … I’m sorry, Ka…Kayla. I doh… don’t have anything to…to do with Alex’s business,” I said. “Alex much… might have other plans that day and wah won’t be home.”

Kayla and the other Alpha girls exchanged glances before Kayla said, “No worries, Daisy. I understand.”

Yet, I had a feeling she didn’t.

Later, Amy and I were changing our clothes in the girl’s locker room for werewolf training when we heard loud whispers from the other side of a wall of lockers.

Chapter 19

It was Kayla and some of her friends from our lunch table.

“How dare Daisy take that attitude with me,” Kayla said. “I couldn’t believe how arrogant she was just because she’s Alex Wilson’s daughter. But she’s still a nob*dy.”

The other girls furthered their agreement.

“Daisy thinks she’s a princess,” Kayla continued. “But she’s nothing but a freak who cahi

cah… can’t tah… talk.”

The others giggled and squealed at Kayla’s impression of my stutter.

I began to shake, and tears stung my eyes as humiliation washed over me. None of those girls liked me or wanted to be my friend. Kayla just wanted to use me as a

connection to Alex.

I was tempted to tell Alex what she had done and ask him never to speak with Kayla’s father again. But I had told Kayla the truth; I had nothing to do with his business.

After waiting for Kayla and her friends to leave the locker room, I turned and left by a side door to the outside. I didn’t want Kayla and the others to know I heard them mocking me.

But I would remember every word.

I couldn’t concentrate during training, making several easy mistakes. Amy did her best to comfort me. When we returned inside, she excused herself to call her father.

After my last class of the day, I met Amy at our spot on the roof. Tears came to my eyes again, along with a smile, when I saw she was holding a huge slice of red velvet cake in a plastic container.

“My favorite!” I said. “It’s just what I need.”

“I told Dad you were having a rough day and asked him to bring it from the restaurant.”

I took a chunk of the cake and handed the rest to Amy. It was delicious.

“Daisy, maybe you should stop trying to fit in with girls like Kayla,” Amy said and licked icing from her fingers. “You shouldn’t have to force yourself to do things that make you uncomfortable.”

“Thanks, Amy,” I said. “I’m tired of being nervous all the time. And I don’t think the rich Alpha kids will let me fit in no matter what I do. They seem to enjoy being mean. I’m giving up,”

“Don’t give up. You’re the daughter of the richest and most powerful man in our society,” Amy reminded me. “Your Alpha blood goes back centuries.

“I just wish I was me again.” I sighed. “Life was easier when everyb*dy thought I was a plain, poor nob*dy.”

“Why don’t you make them accept who you really are?” Amy asked. “Be yourself… do what feels right to you, and stop worrying about anyone accepting you.”

hugged Amy before we left the school grounds, and I thought about her words all the way home. After the chauffeur stopped the car at the mansion’s front entrance, I jumped out of the car and hurried to my room.

The golden swimsuit and the wetsuit were draped over the armchair where I’d left them. Looking them over for a few minutes, I decided Amy was right.

I was done trying to fit in.
