Evelyn POV

“And not the fact that you haven’t truly gotten over Reuben.” Noah catches me off guard with his suggestion. I can’t stop my own hands from tightly fisting into balls upon my upper thighs. My anger trying to take control of me, control of my wolf.

“Gotten over Reuben?” I sneer at the very idea. It was a good thing my hands were fisted on my lap because they wanted to pull at my hair for the flashback that just entered my mind. The shiny silver sword that had been left behind, left stabbed in my mother’s chest. The memory of my father’s severed head makes a wave of nausea bubble within my stomach and I have to work on my breathing to keep it down.

“He murdered my parents and innocent pack members…how could I get over that, get over my hatred of him? Why would I?….Who could..” I trail off at the end, my words becoming more a personal reminder of my vendetta against him. I couldn’t find inner peace until Reuben felt the slightest bit of sorrow that he had caused me. He was an Alpha, he didn’t love like me, he was cold…ruthless. I had to adapt a different path of revenge for him, and that would be little by little, bit by bit, chipping away at his power. At his kingdom.

“Evelyn…this really isn’t you. For four years I’ve bit my tongue but I don’t want you living your life with so much hatred, so much anger. Your parent’s wouldn’t want you to be like this. The more the pack grows…the more he’ll notice and will want to face the Alpha of the Silvermoon Pack. When that time comes, will you be ready to finally face him?” He finally lets go of my feet, placing them on his lap. His eyes burning into mine for my answer, but I cannot answer him. In my heart of hearts, I didn’t know how I would feel seeing him again.

I didn’t want to discuss this anymore, he wouldn’t change my mind, he hadn’t in the past four years. As time went on I just became more vengeful. I could feel it eating away at my soul.

“Did the two packs we were

communicating with send a reply yet?” I ask changing the subject, back to pack business. I found that easier now adays than topics of the heart. A sigh escapes Noah as he realises I wasn’t willing to discuss Reuben any further.

“Alright…” He deeply sighs as he stands up, placing my legs on the sofa as he walks towards the open kitchen.

“…One of the packs has accepted and promises to provide us with their full support going forward. But the second pack is delaying their response. They seem to be waiting and watching. After all, if they do join the Silvermoon pack, they will be fighting against the Red Stone Pack in the future.”

“Cowards.” I scoff at their cowardice.

“If they are that afraid then I don’t want them to be associated with us. Tell them it is too late.”

“Evelyn!” Noah calls me out on my coldness at their differing but to me if they are not brave enough now to consider breaking away from the Alpha King, then when the time came for battle….they would chicken out at that stage. Best to save myself the hassle of negotiating with them now.

“No Noah, if they can’t act with power then they will be eaten alive. That will either be from Reuben or myself, if they want to stay on the fence then they will only fall.” I say with conviction before leaving to check on the children. I no

longer had time for half-hearted

attempts by packs that wanted to

remain neutral.

“Can we have a story Mummy…

please?” Elspeth places her hands

together as if praying, a cute move that

I always give in to. “One story, then bed.” I agree, trying

to remind them who was in charge here.

“You pick Mummy.” Elspeth says as I tuck her in and kiss her forehead. Rex walks over from his bed to join the two of us.

Back at the Silvermoon Alpha home, I had put both children together in the same room and didn’t want to disturb their routine whilst at the Lakehouse. I knew in time they would want separate rooms but for now they still found comfort in each other’s company. It also helped with my nightmares to know they were together in one room, it made it easier for me to check on them throughout the night.

“How about Cinderella?” I suggest trying to hide my laughter at Rex’s rolling of the eyes.

“Really? A love story…” He tuts as if he were already a teenager.

“Yes really, shut up Rex…you are so annoying.” Elspeth elbows her brother in the chest.

“There once lived a girl called Cinderella….” I started as they both snuggled up under the duvet.

“She lived in a beautiful castle with her father…”

“Where is our father?” I feel like the wind has been knocked out of my lungs at Rex’s question. I never mentioned their father but naturally as they grew, I expected that they would have questions about him…but not yet, they were only four. I swallow at the lump that has formed in the back of my throat.

“Sorry Mum, I didn’t mean to upset you.” Rex climbs over the bed and wraps his arms around my waist, looking up at me.

“You haven’t.” I smile gently to him, letting him know he can always ask me anything. No matter how hard I might find the topic.

“Did he hurt you? Was he mean?” Rex quietly asks keeping his eyes mine. fixed on

“I want Noah to be our daddy.” Elspeth claims, as if it was that easy. I chuckle slightly and lean forward to cup the side of her face. “Noah is your uncle, not your daddy.” I

softly correct her.

“Your father lives far away and works a lot. I am sure when you are both much older, you will meet your father then.”

“Yes!” Rex thrusts his fisted hand in the air as a celebration.

“I want to grow up really fast so that I can meet him sooner.” Elspeth spins as she starts to jump on the bed, Rex now jumping with her.

I watch them jump for joy at the

thought of one day meeting their father but the truth was, I would do all in my power to prevent him from meeting them. They didn’t need to know what a monster he was. Better that he was busy, that he was away and would one day meet them. I think that would be the kinder option. They were mine, mine only. Once the children are asleep I close the bedroom door leaving a night light on for them. I head into the sitting room to read my pack emails before calling it a night. I walk in to find Noah sitting at the table with the laptop open, logged into the emails. I crack my neck, it was sore from sitting on their bed for too long.

“Anything interesting?” I ask as I place my hand on the back of Noah’s chair and rub my neck.

“Yes…an invitation…” He cagily responds.

“From?”

“The Red Stone pack!” He looks up at me with anguish in his eyes. He moves out of the chair, allowing me to read the email. As I click on the email to open it I read out the invitation’s title.

“The one who should come, is finally coming.
