Chapter 40

We stayed silent until all that could be heard was our uneven breaths and the light streams of the water behind us. Moments later, the sound of ruffling trees made us both stiffen. Kade was on his feet within a second, pushing me behind his back.

“Who’s there?” he demanded.

The figure unveiled itself. I breathed out a sigh of relief at the sight of Fay.

“It’s alright,” I said to Kade,” he’s a friend.”

“He’s a hob,” Kade said.

“Trust me.”

I stepped aside and walked to where Fay was. He wrapped his around me and breathed into my neck,” I’m so relieved that you’re alright.”

“You can’t stay long,” I said, pulling back,” if the queen finds out, she’ll kill you like Ellie.”

“I’ve come to help,” he said.

“You’ll open a portal for us?”

“There is no use in opening a portal and sending you home. The queen will find you if you return.”

“Then what do you suggest,” Kade had the dagger out, pointed towards the hob.

“Faeries are unholy creatures,” began Fay,” meaning, they cannot set foot on a few places on earth that are deemed to be the holiest places, one place in particular that had been faerie free for eternity is The Temple Mount in Jerusalem.”

“Are you able to summon a portal there?”

“I am, but I cannot pass through. Only you two can.”

“If we go there, it means that the queen cannot come after us, right?” I asked.

“No faerie will ever be able to find you again,” he reassured.

I thought of my parents, and life back home.

“This is the only chance we have left,” Kade said. I nodded.

He was right, it was either this or whatever torturous fate the queen had planned for us next.

I nodded at Fay,” alright.”

Fay began to summon a portal where the lake began. It seemed to take him some time, but finally an opening within the tumbling waters was beginning to reveal itself.

“Its ready,” Fay said peering at Kade,” you first.”

“No, you first,” Kade grabbed me by my arms and lead me towards the shifting portal.

“How about you go in together? But hurry, we are running out of time, the queen is sending more ogres as we speak.”

I held onto Kade’s hands and we stood side by side at the entrance. I nervously walked and we stepped closer and closer.

“Ready?” Kade looked into my eyes.

I nodded,” yes.”

Suddenly, a force from behind pushed against him. He fell, face first through the portal, dragging me with him, expect he disappeared and I did not. Instead, I felt a shock of what felt like lightening ripple through me. I fell on my knees through the portal and into the water, letting out screams of pain. The portal was still spinning, still awaiting for others to transit but for some reason it had taken Kade but not myself.

I stumbled to my feet and peered at Fay.

“What happened? I’m still here-”

My words were caught off by my realizations.

I cannot pass through the portal fore I am half faerie, therefore I to, am banned from holy places. This must have been the fobs plan.

It had been Fay, all along working with the queen against me.

“You told the queen that Kade had visited me that night, didn’t you?” I began, stumbling closer and closer towards the hob,” you told her about Ellie, that’s why she killed her, and send her guardsmen after them in the forest, it’s why she changed the wedding to three days, you told her about Ben, she couldn’t have known about him, but you knew!”

All this time, he was not my trust worthy friend, but her spy.

“Took you long enough,” he rolled his eyes and two ogres appeared from behind the trees.

“You monster!” I cried out,” I trusted you!”

“Has nobody warned you that faeries are evil and wicked? Well, now you know.” He watched with amusement as the ogres held my hands behind my back.

“Where did you dump Kade!” I screamed out,” what did you do?”

He was already walking away.

“As long as you bear the blood of the folk, you are damned, you too cannot set foot in the place of the holy. I saved your wolf friend, but you will never be able to save the both of you.”

Three Months Later

Kades Pov

It was a little past midnight and I was in Sequoia Forest. Every night since I’d made my return from Jerusalem, I’d scavenged the woods in search for a faerie that would be willing to open up a portal. So far, I had failed every single time. Walking past the missing posters of Aubrette made it hard to drift to slumber and so most nights were sleepless. I could not avoid the thoughts of what she might be going through. I knew that one of these days, I’d be able to return to the land of the folk and bring her back. I knew where to find faerie poison, I knew the way into the castle, I was prepped and prepared but I had no way of summoning a way there.

Tonight, I killed another Asrai. That marks the forty- seventh one since I’d been back. I’d convinced my father that I would return to the land of the folk to avenge my mother. Isabelle Ulwin had stopped sending him letters after the last one three months ago. She had written that it was far too late for any plan of theirs to succeed, and that Aubrette had been officially crowned and married, ending all ties of their alliance.

Most days, father would not look into my eyes. It must have been the second worse day of my life at Mike’s funeral, not even Candice had been able to meet my gaze. There was that burden that I will never be free from. I knew that for father, it felt as if I had chosen a half faerie over my own blood. I was on a mission to restore my relationship with my father and prove to him that I could capture my mothers killer and to bring my mate home.

I was determined to find a way into the land of the folk once more, so that I could kill the queen of the folk and her son, avenge my mother and rescue my mate.
