It had to be said that Fredric's words really struck a chord with her.

Jelena becoming her sister-in-law was icing on the cake for her - it made her all the more powerful.

"You said you'd listen tobefore. Does that still stand?" She asked.

Leopold paused, his eyes darkening a shade. "Aren't you the one who disagreed? Saying I passed the hot potato to you." She shrugged nonchalantly, replying, "I've changed my mind." His eyebrows arched, "Changed your mind how? Don't want to side with Sheryl anymore?" Aurelia was almost certain Leopold had x-ray vision, seeing right through her little schemes.

"I never decided whose side I was on. What I mean is, that I've decided to handle this hot potato myself. Will you listen to me?" Leopold didn't answer, scrutinizing her with a serious expression.

She pouted, "Fine, I knew you were just teasing, trying to cheerup. I was a fool to take it seriously." He gently tapped her head, "What kind of schare you conjuring up now?" She scoffed, "What schcan I possibly have? I'm just thinking, what good does opposing Fredric's divorce do for me? If I help Sheryl, she won't be that grateful, but Fredric and Jelena will definitely hold a grudge. If I ever get into trouble, I'll be on my own." Leopold knew all too well that her cunning mind was at work.

"Witharound, what's there to worry about?" Aurelia let out a scornful laugh, "The worst thing I could face is you finding your real love and slapping the divorce papers on my face." He choked a bit, "Can't you have a little faith in me?" She picked up a glass from the coffee table, took a sip of water, and gazed at him unwaveringly, "I'm a realist. I believe you won't betraynow, but who can guarantee the future? No one knows what will happen, and promises about the future are unreliable." She paused, then spoke softly, "I remember when we were talking divorce, the only person from the Stirling family who really stood bywas Beverley. These days, everyone loves the icing on the cake, but few are willing to provide timely help. As the head of the family, you can influence many people's interests, and everyone will be cautious. Only those closest towill stand byunconditionally." Leopold sighed deeply. Even if he could promise her a lifetof fidelity, would she believe it? Though they were remarried, her heart hadn't truly returned to him.

"Aurelia!" he said, gripping her shoulders, "I will be a good husband, can you have a little confidence in me?" A wistful smile slowly crept onto her face, "You've never givena sense of security. Even saying you'd be all ears and heed my words was just to placate me. You've had your own plans all along. How can I have more confidence?" Leopold fell silent, her words catching in his throat like a bone, impossible to swallow and too painful to spit out.

In truth, her change in attitude took him by surprise. He had thought that despite Jelena being her cousin, Aurelia would still choose to side with Sheryl. Her behavior and words had pointed to that. But she had shifted so quickly.

"Let's talk about Fredric's mess later. I don't want it to affect our relationship." Leopold finally said.

Aurelia hummed to herself with a hint of irony. As if it wouldn't affect them.

When a couple was not united, it was hard to grow old together.
