"What did you say?"

Avery's expression froze.

Allie must be joking. Even though she hates me to the core and wants to break up my relationship with Cayden, it's still too childish of her to give such an outlandish reason.

"I said, you're my daughter. Didn't I make myself clear enough?" Allie held up her coffee and took a sip before raising her head, her face devoid of any emotions. "Therefore, you cannot be together with Cayden."

Staring intently at Allie, Avery clasped her hands underneath the table. They were clenched so tightly that sweat began to break out.

I didn't tell her that I lost my biological mom when I was young, so how did she find out? Was it Cayden that told her?

Avery was confused, but it quickly dawned upon her that Allie used to be a mistress. She had separated Lily, who went ballistic the other day, with Cayden's father, Bruce, and subsequently took her place.

Furthermore, Avery had heard her neighbors mention that her birth mother had eloped with a rich man ever since she was young.

The reason was that the rich man could give her mother a better life.

The events might be consistent, but what does it matter? There are plenty of mistresses and wicked women in the world who eloped with rich men. So, how can it be that she's my biological mother based on just this fact alone?

Avery shook her head. It can't be. I don't believe it!

Locking gazes with Avery, Allie struck at Avery's weakness. "Ery, I never asked about your father's name until you mentioned that your family name was Rumpley. It was then that my curiosity was sparked and began to worry that you were related to Leonardo.

"However, I didn't dare inquire further due to Cayden's presence. In fact, I was wondering if your father had told you that you were my daughter, and the true reason you're seducing Cayden is just to exact revenge on me for abandoning the two of you."

At that moment, Allie's grim expression was filled with malice.

"But now, it's clear that you have no idea that I'm your mother and you didn't get together with Cayden to spite me." Allie regained her composure.

Avery shook her head vehemently as she refused to accept it, just like how she refused to accept the news of her father's liver cancer back then. "Don't deceive me. This is such a third-rate lie that only a child would believe in."

"A third-rate lie? Do you think that as someone who can become the wife of the former chairman of Trident Group, I would be wasting my time on such a deception?" Allie retorted with a cocked brow.

Staring at Allie, Avery couldn't make sense of the situation.

It's true that Allie is both crafty and ruthless. Those are the qualities that led her to Bruce's side. After solidifying her position, she enjoyed her status as his wife. Therefore, a woman with such an agenda is obviously shrewd, and a shrewd woman doesn't try to deceive with an outlandish excuse. After all, such an excuse might work once but isn't sustainable at all. Even if she's foolish enough to do so, Cayden would still be sharp enough to see through her lies."

Recognizing the fact, Avery closed her eyes and felt a sudden chill descend upon her body.

Does this mean that Allie is really my birth mother?

Despite ruminating in her seat for more than ten minutes, Avery was incapable of calming herself down. Thus, she decided to grab her bag and leave.

"Stop where you are!" Allie called out, to which Avery complied.

Picking up her bag, Allie took out some cash and placed it on the table. She then sauntered elegantly up to Avery and suggested in an icy tone, "I hope that you won't lose control of your emotions. Find your place in this and deal with the fallout rationally. Otherwise, you'll end up destroying Cayden."

Finally, Avery raised her head and made eye contact with Allie.

In contrast to her miserable reaction, Allie was as calm as a cucumber. The way she made the revelation was no different from announcing what was for lunch and dinner.

She came out of nowhere and claimed to be my mother. Can I really believe her?

Avery decided to verify the fact herself.

If she really is my mother, how can she face her own daughter with such indifference? How can she not show any emotion on her face or in her eyes?

Wiping the tear off her eyes, Avery figured that Allie's reaction shouldn't come as a surprise. It was futile to expect the person who abandoned her to show any actual concern. After all, she had never seen her mother ever since she was born.

If not for her cold-blooded nature, she wouldn't have been capable of something so cruel.

Avery headed downstairs as bitterness filled her heart.

Allie followed behind her.

Upon hailing a taxi, Avery got into it and choked, "Primo Hospital, please."

The driver gave her a strange look when she began to cry. Nonetheless, he started the meter and drove in silence.

No sooner had Avery left than Allie flagged down a taxi.

Expecting what was going to happen, she didn't dare drive, for fear of being recognized. After getting in, she instructed the driver to follow Avery and reminded him to stay on her tail.

Meanwhile, a distraught Avery cried till she lost her voice. Even then, tears continue to stream down her cheeks.

How is this possible?

At that moment, chaotic images began to flood her mind.

When Cayden arrived at the small town to study, he was considered the campus hunk.

During her job interview with him, he had asked her a few personal questions which she found strange.

When he confessed his feelings for her in the midst of hugs and kisses, he told her that he had fallen for her a long time ago and had gained the independence to love her openly, free from the restraints of adults.

When Cayden lifted her skirt and pleasured her with his fingers inside the hotel suite...

The way he had reached climax and the evidence of that flowing out between her legs...

It was unimaginably intimate.

In the midst of breaking down, Avery desperately tried to catch her breath. Nevertheless, the suffocating feeling that overwhelmed her caused her to curl herself into a ball. With both her hands holding her stinging throat, she shook her head desperately, unable to vocalize her crying screams.

"Miss, are you all right?" the driver asked in fear.

What kind of shock did she go through? Why is she distressed to that extent?

Finally, Avery cried out loud.

Monitoring her while driving, the taxi driver figured that she was probably devastated after losing someone close to her since she was heading to Primo Hospital.

Upon her arrival, Avery got out of the taxi with Allie following close behind.

"Let's go in together." Allie caught up with the former and grabbed her arm.

Gritting her teeth, Avery pulled her hand free of Allie's grip before shooting a piercing glare at the woman who was the source of her suffering.

"I know that your dad is in the hospital. If you don't want him to burst a vessel, you'd better get a grip of yourself and think carefully of what to say. After that, you're free to verify whether I'm your birth mother however you please," Allie suggested rationally.

At that moment, Avery's phone rang.

She shot Allie a glare as if she was a wounded beast aiming her horns at the latter.

When she saw that it was Cayden on the line, she didn't dare answer and tightened her grip on the phone instead. In addition to her trembling lips, her tears fell uncontrollably at every blink of her eye.
