Bruce, that despicable man, was finally gone for good! 

“If it hadn’t been for Evelyn testifying that he had conned her out of over a billion dollars, Bruce would never have received such a harsh sentence. It was all thanks to Evelyn.” 

Hertha sighed with a heavy heart, “Such a shame that Evelyn paid with her life for it.” 

At the mention of this topic, Thalassa’s breathing became labored with grief. The intricacies and the reasons behind it all had become too tangled to explain or unravel. 

“Thalassa, Hertha, dinner’s ready, come and eat,” Astrid called out, carrying a tray of food from the kitchen.

Hertha took a bite of Astrid’s braised green beans and complimented, “Delicious, sweet and tender. It really tastes different from what get in the city.”

She served another helping onto Hertha’s plate. 

Today marked the day Bruce was executed by firing squad. 

After the execution, the police notified his next of kin to come and claim the body. 

Lucy, upon seeing Bruce’s body lying on the gurney, could no longer contain her trembling body and burst into loud, uncontrollable sobs, throwing herself beside Bruce. 

“Oh, Bruce, you heartless wretch, you’ve let me down your whole life, and now in your old age, you go and leave me first. Why did you have to abandon me?” 

“Mom, get over here!” Susan pulled Lucy away before she could touch Bruce. Panting with anger, she said, “Get a grip. He had AIDS, and there’s blood all over him Aren’t you afraid of getting infected?” 

Lucy looked at Susan through tears, “You don’t understand. Ever since your father knew he was sick, he’s kept his distance, to avoid infecting me, we’ve never been intimate since. Even though he always talked about divorce, his actions were always protecting me. Susan, maybe you can’t fathom what it’s like to love someone, but your father and I shared true love. I was never worried about getting infected because I wasn’t afraid. I loved him, and if I did get infected, then we’d just die together. I never imagined he wouldn’t die of the disease but would leave this way.” 

Lucy said amid sobs.

Susan listened with a twisted face, unable to comprehend her parents’ so-called love. As far back as she could remember, her parents were always quarreling. 

Bruce had countless affairs with other women. Lucy was clearly upset, but she never brought herself to divorce him. 

How could Lucy call this distorted marriage love? 

Susan couldn’t see a shred of love between them, only betrayal, stubbornness, and endurance. Bruce betrayed, and Lucy stubbornly refused to divorce. This suffocating marriage should have ended long ago! 

“Don’t talk to me about your disgusting love. It’s grating on my ears!” Susan spat with revulsion. 

Lucy, with tears welling up, glanced at Susan, then reached out a trembling hand, wanting to touch Bruce one last time. There was a bullet hole on his forehead, the fatal wound. 

Her hand touched his face, her cold fingertips felt a lingering warmth. 

That touch ignited something within her, her shaking intensified and her breath caught. 

In that moment, her heartbeat seemed to sync with his last. As Lucy’s tears fell, she whispered, “Bruce, did you think death would free you from me? Wait for me for just a few would free you from me? Wait for me for just a few hours. I won’t leave your side even as a ghost.”
