CHAPTER - THIRTY

BRINLEY.

Do you know that sickening feeling after eating a corn dog and riding the roaster right after not thinking about the consequences? That's the feeling I have right now as we are all gathered around Papa's bed.

Tear's streaming down everyone's face, myself included. Xander's holding my shoulders as Kelsy, Delores, and I say our goodbyes to him. But what is the right last words to speak to someone you love?

"I love you so much, Owen," Delores Crys hugging Papa, he is too weak to speak, but the look in his eyes tells us he loves her very much.

"I love you, Papa. And so doe's Rose," Kelsy smiles at him and rubs his hand.

I give Papa's other hand a gentle squeeze, still unable to form words as Papa's breathing because almost non-existent. Xander's fingers on my shoulders tighten, and he leans down. His five a clock shadow rubs my cheek.

"Tell him you love him. He can't hold on much longer,”

I inhaled a deep breath, looked into Papa's eyes, and forced a smile.

"I love you, Daddy," The words were barely audible to my ears. However, Papa must have heard it because he smiled and squeezed my hand.

"II..." Papa stuttered, his voice barely a whisper and so weak.

"I love you all," He breathed.

"He is stronger than you think," Were Papa's last words before taking his final breath. No one knew what Papa meant, but for me, because he was the only person I told about my baby's condition. Even in his last moment, he tried to comfort me, telling me that my baby was strong.

"Brinley, may I have a word with you,” Russel paused, glancing at Xander, "Alone,"

I nod and try to follow Russel, but Xander won't let go of my hand.

"Whatever it is, you have to say to my mate. You can say in front of me,” Xander tells Russel, who looks at me then back at Xander.

Xander will find out about the baby, whether now or later. I'm not trying to keep him in the dark; when I found out a few days ago, I kept it to myself so that I could spend these days with Papa. Russel told me he would let me know when he talked with Dr. Gram, and I didn't think they would take two days to finally tell me what they had decided.

I have a feeling I'm going to need Xander here with me.

"It's okay. He's the father.” Xander narrows his eyes at me but says nothing. Russel nods.

"Let us go to the kitchen,”

Xander and I followed Russel, taking a seat at the dining table.

"Well, I have spoken to Dr. Gram. And as you told me, Brinley, she was unaware. However, she looked over the ultrasound I took, and she saw it then. So, once he is born, we will monitor him. The longer we can wait for the surgery, the better chance of his survival.”

"What the fuck are you talking about?" Xander asks Russel.

"You didn't tell him?" Russel asks me, and I shake my head.

"I didn't want to leave Papa,”

Russel sighs and begins to fill Xander in on everything about the baby. I felt terrible for not telling Xander. We were in such a good place that I'm afraid I might have ruined it.

"Send all the reports to Jacob. He will be the one to monitor her pregnancy from here on out,” Xander tells Russel.

"Of course. I will get with him and Dr. Gram, and with all three heads, we can find out the best route to take,” Russel tells us as he stands from the table.

"Do either of you have any questions?"

I shake my head.

"I do," Xander tells him.

"Yes, alpha king?"

"Please, call me Xander."

Russel nods, "What's your question, Xander?"

"You said, once he was born. Is the baby a boy?"

Russel looks at me, then shakes his head.

"Yes, sir. The baby is a boy,"

Xander narrows his eyes at me, and Russel takes that as his cue to leave.

"How long?"

"Xander, I."

"How long have you known?" Xanders says, cutting me off.

"The day you came for me at Knox's place, I had found out that day,"

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Xander, you were Julia, and you didn’t want the baby or me,”

Xander stands, "So you decided to keep the baby's gender from me?" He says, raising his voice. "Xander, I'm sorry. I didn't think..."

"You didn't think I deserved to know? Or know about his heart condition?"

I cringed. Xander raised his voice so loud that Delores, Kelsy, and Ryder walked into the kitchen. "What's going on?" Delores asked, looking between Xander and me.

Xander didn't take his eyes off me.

"I told you how I felt about you. Do you think that was easy for me? You know how hard it was for me to trust and inform you of the curse and why I didn't want the feeling of having a mate. But I could stop myself from falling in love with you. Trust me, I tried, but you said you loved me. So how do I know you're telling the truth about that?"

"Xander, I do love you,"

"You lied to me," He said, shaking his head and walking toward the kitchen doors.

"Xander, please," I sniffled, "Please, don't go,"

I flinched as Xander slammed the door behind him; I just sat there and cried. Not only had I lost my father, but I lost Xander too, and I have no one to blame for it but myself.

Since our fight this morning, I haven't seen Xander, and the day faded into night. I have spent my day lying in bed replaying the scene repeatedly. I may have lied to him about the baby, but I never lied about how I felt; I loved him that much was the truth.

*Knock*

*Knock*

*Knock*

"Come in,"

"Brinley, Xander wanted me to tell you to get packed up; the car is waiting for both of you outside,” Kelsy says, rubbing my back.

"I feel sick, I can't,” I didn't lie; 1 did feel sick.

"I'll go and tell Xander. Maybe you should leave tomorrow,"

"Thanks, Kelsy,"

She gets up from the bed and walks out the door. "Maybe we can go play with Rose before her bedtime. She misses you,”

I nod my head, "I'd like that,”

"Great," She said and closed the door behind her.

I love spending time with Rose, we play with her toys, and she laughs at everything I say. I've enjoyed getting to know her these few weeks that I've been here, and I will miss her when I leave and go back to the palace.

The door bursts open, crashing into the wall, causing me to cringe involuntarily.

I must learn to pay attention so that everything doesn't startle me.

Xander strolls in, not even glancing in my direction, the way he holds his posture tells me he is still pissed at me. He walks to the closet and pulls out my suitcase.

"What are you doing?"

Silence.

I get off the bed and walk over to him, grabbing his arm, but he pushes my hand away.

"Xander, why are you doing this?"

He stops putting my clothes in the bag and glares at me. My chest tightens at the hard look in Xander's eyes, and a shiver runs down my spine.

"You're sister said you were feeling well. So I'm packing for you. The car leaves in twenty minutes.” "Xander, I didn't lie to you," He narrows his eyes.

"Yes, I lied. But not about loving you, I thought if you knew right away you make me leave and I wouldn't get to spend the last days with Papa,”

"Do you think I'm that heartless bastard that everyone says I am? Do you really think I would have taken you away from your dad? Because I wouldn't have,"

“I'm sorry,"

He shakes his head and continues throwing things in the bags. Then, without saying another word or even looking at me, he walks to the door, bags in hand, and holds it open for me.

I walked out my bedroom door and down the stairs. I said goodbye to my family. Delores told me she would see me soon when I had the baby.

Kelsy wraps her arms around my neck, "Maybe we can play with Rose another time . I'll see you soon; take care of yourself," She says and lets me go.

"Bye," I wave at everyone and walk to the car's door; Xander stands holding the door, I glance up at him, and he turns his head, and I climb into the car.

The car takes off, and I lean against the cold window. I never even got the chance to talk to Amanda.

Note to self call Amanda.

Every time I tried to dose off, the car would hit a bump, and my head would bump against the glass. It's hard to sleep in a tiny car.

I glance at Xander, who's texting someone on his phone, then my gaze slides to lap. It looks cozier than the window. I move my hair to the side, pretending not to see Xander watch what I was doing. I leaned down and placed my head on his lap, I felt his body stiffen, but I ignored it and closed my eyes.

XANDER.

I could tell Brinley wasn't happy when she got into the car; she doesn't hide her emotions well. Of course, she's upset with me because I made her leave her family, but I have things that require my attention since I'm king. Mark Mortaga has been sending threatening messages to Kyle since I've been gone. I let it go this long because my little mate's father was dying.

Somehow word about my mate had already spread to the Mortaga Kingdom, and he is demanding that we have a meeting. That sorry fuck thinks he can order anything from me has another thing coming. I had Kyle set up an appointment with him at his Kingdom tomorrow, and I couldn't leave Brinley in her old pack now that everyone knows she's my mate. It wouldn't be safe. She needs to be in my Kingdom protected.

Kyle texted to let me know that the meeting was set. Through my lashes, I watched her. She moved her long brown hair to the side and yarned before placing her head down my lap.

I stiffened; it took all my self-control not to rip her clothes off and fuck that lying mouth of hers. I looked down at her sleeping face, and I sighed.

I hate that she keeps these secrets from me. I know her reasons, though, that still doesn't make them right. She should have told me about the baby's heart and that it's a boy. I had the right to know that my son might not live.

"Were here, sir. Would you like me to escort the lady to her room?”

"Touch what's mine, and I'll break your hand," I tell him; opening the door, I slide Brinley into my arms and carefully step out of the car, so I don't hurt her.

"Welcome home, alpha,” The palace staff greeted me. I gave them a curt nod before climbing the stairs. Carrying my little mate feels like holding a pillow. Being pregnant has added much weight to her.

My little mate sure is beautiful with her long brown hair, green eyes, and creamy white complexion. She is short, maybe 5'2, 5'3, and has the perfect slender figure, curvy hips, and small breasts. Just the thought, my cock stir with excitement.

I shook away the thoughts as I opened the door to my room and smelled Julia's scent, I didn't see her, but I smelled her there. I closed the door quietly and made my way to spare a room so My little mate could rest.

I kiss her forehead before making my way to the Mortaga kingdom.
