EMMA

“Oh, my bad. I’m sorry. I thought there was no one here,” I said to Sean the minute I walked into an empty glass and saw him

there.

I turned to leave but he stopped me. “You can stay if you want to he said.

“Are you sure? You seem like you want your peace and quietness, I remarked judging from the fact that he was here alone and all by himself.

I haven’t seen him since he left us at the grocery store and I’ve wanted to text and ask why he left but afraid that he might not want to answer. He does that a lot. He doesn’t reply to my messages and when he does, it’s when he’s asking one or two questions which was rarely.

“You aren’t going to disturb after all,” he said.

I creased my brows but avoided looking at his eyes as usual.

“Are you sure?” I asked again.

“I said you can stay, didn’t I? If I didn’t want you to stay then I wouldn’t have attempted to stop you so that’s the answer you want, he replied.

I went to sit down on one of the seats. I put on my headphones and began to listen to music. I took out my phone from my bag.

“Have you thought about what you want for your birthday?”

“What did you say?” I couldn’t help but ask.

I took off my headphones, leaving them around my neck so I could hear from him..

“What did you say?” I asked again,

“Have you thought about what you want for your birthday?” He asked.

“You know you don’t have to get me anything right?” I told him.

“And why shouldn’t I? I want to give you something. What is it? I’m sure you have something in mind already,” he insisted.

1 do have what I wanted him to give me but I don’t know if he’d be able to give me that. I want his heart.

“Why do you always avoid eye contact with me? Is it that bad to look at me?” He asked taking me by surprise and I immediately looked towards his direction.

“No. Not. not at all.” I assured him before looking away again.

“Exactly what it is that I’m saying. You say that you aren’t avoiding eye contact but it’s evident that you are. You can’t stare into my eyes for more than three seconds without looking away, he uttered.

“That’s not true, I denied.

“Then prove it,” he said, walking towards me. I didn’t see him coming bur

I swallowed hard the lump that formed in my throat. I honestly wasn’t expecting him to come.

“Why do you always avoid eye contact?” He asked again, his voice soft and soothing to the ear. Any and everything about Sean gives me chills

He then sat down on the chair beside me. I cleared my throat. “You left Ethan and I at the grocery store the other day but before you left, I could tell that you and Ethan had issues. Did he say something to offend you?” I questioned.

“Not really. It’s nothing you should concern yourself with,” he replied, brushing it off.

“Ethan is a jerk. You don’t always have to put up with him and thanks for standing by my side. I didn’t expect you to.” I told

him.

He chuckled. “Ethan is my best friend but it doesn’t change the fact that if he’s wrong. I won’t call him out for it but I would never do that for anyone. I won’t take anyone’s side over Ethan but you are the exemption,” he replied and my heart sk ipped

from his words.

“I am the exception?” I asked.

Yes, you are. You have always been.”

At that moment I looked at him and I didn’t fail to notice the smile on his face. My heart raced faster than normal staring him and his beautiful smile.

Ever since Ethan and Sean began to avoid me, I have never liked it. I didn’t understand why they distanced themselves from

me.

This is the first conversation I would be having with Sean other than my birthday. Every year my birthday, he’d come with me and give me gifts and after that day, he’d stop being nice to me.

This was strange. It made my heart feel warm and at the same time, I had many questions to ask.

*For years you ignored me. I don’t know why. You only spoke to me on my birthday,” I stated, reminding him of the distance between us.

“Trust me when I say it wasn’t what I wanted. It wasn’t… it’s complicated but don’t worry, all that is about to change soon,” he replied.

“Complicated? Then un-complicate it,” I said.

“I wish it was as easy as you make it seem but let’s get back to my first question and that is why do you avoid eye contact with me? Is it that bad to look at me?”

Did I mention that every time he spoke to me, he spoke to me softly and tenderly and each time

I’d try to lock eyes, I’d be tempted but I end up looking away because I wouldn’t want to make a big mess of myself and confess of my feelings to him.

It scares me honestly. I don’t want to make a big fool of myself. Tear that my urge to kiss him might make me lose control and I’d end up doing it.

I’ve been wanting to kiss him for a long time. I’ve been wanting to know how he tastes.

“What are you thinking about sweetheart?” He asked, leaning closer to me. I unconsciously leaned away because I didn’t want him close.

“You might fall,” he referred to the face that I was leaning away from him.

“Don’t do that Em,” he said.

“Don’t… don’t do what?” I asked frantically.

“Bit on your lips,” he answered.

“Oh.. that’s, I spoke..

“Why shouldn’t I?” Lasked.

“It’s because you give me insane thoughts and I don’t want to do any of that,” he replied.

“Insane thoughts? What do you mean by that? I hope you don’t think of doing something bad to yourself because I wouldn’t like that, I told him and he chuckled.

– “That’s not it Em. It’s more than what you think. Don’t worry, it’s nothing bad. It’s just insane,” he smiled.

I locked eyes with him that moment and I felt a happy of electricity run down my spine. I have never confidently looked into his eyes but I did and it made me feel glad.

His eyes are the most beautiful blue I’ve ever seen. I felt drunk while staring at it. It was as if I couldn’t get enough. It pulled

“Your eyes are beautiful,” I spoke before realizing

I never thought I’d voice out my head thoughts but my mouth seems to have other plans of its own.

“You think so? I think yours are more beautiful,” he replied.

I shook

my head. “You are more beautiful”

He chuckled. “Thank you Em. It feels good speaking to you. This would be our longest conversation in a long time.”

“You stopped speaking to me that’s why,” I reminded him.

“I told you not to think about that. There will be changes soon,” be replied.

“Is that why Ethan was angry with you? Because you refuse to avoid me like he wanted?” I questioned.

“What are you saying?” He chucked.

I shrugged. “I mean I don’t know but Ethan likes to control everyone’s lives. Maybe he forced you to stop speaking to me because he wanted me to be friendless and lonely. I mean he doesn’t let anyone come close to me and the other day I found out the reason all my female friends avoided me.”

“What I am saying is that Darcy and Serena threaten anyone who wants to be my friend and that’s why everyone who spoke to me today would avoid me the next day.” I replied.

“Are you for real? You mean they’ve been doing that?” He asked sounding shocked.

“Yea. Lola told me that some days back. She said she was tired of being scared and wanted to be my friend hence her braveness, I answered.

“That’s st upid of that. Did you offend them for them to want to do that?”

“You don’t have to answer. Darcy and Serena are unbelievable so they’d do anything for any s tupid reason. I’m so sorry Em, I didn’t know.” He said.

I shook my head. “It’s fine. It’s not your fault.”

“So what happened the other day between you and Ethan?” I asked.

He punched the bridge of his nose. “You seem quite interested in that, don’t you? I’ve told you to leave and besides, that’s just between Ethan and 1.

“Hmm. I’ve also noticed you both haven’t been hanging around each other lately,” I remarked.

We will be fine Em. Don’t worry about us. It’s nothing big. We will both be fine.” He replied.

I want to know what you want for your birthday so when you do know, don’t hesitate to tell me, okay?” He reminded me

“Sure. I will do that.” He said.

We both sat there for some more minutes talking and I slowly began to feel comfortable with him, sometimes I’d look into his eyes too.

It felt nice speaking to him and it made my feelings for him grow more.

Just how do I tell him that I want him to give me his heart as a birthday gift? Maybe I should take the bold step even if it would hurt, I thought to myself.
