The Trial - Part 6

The next thing I knew, I was being carried by Faldren, who looked very angry, through an empty street towards home. I looked around and saw Dad walking beside us carrying Mum. Dad had had to work so he’d missed the trial.

“What happened?” I asked.

It was still blue day so I didn’t think much time could have passed.

“Oh, you’re awake,” said Dad.

“Can you walk,” asked Faldren, “you’re heavy?”

“I think so.”

He put me down. I felt slightly dizzy and I had a few new bruises on my knees and left arm but otherwise I didn’t seem to be hurt.

“Breeze told me that Lishrashic had been acquitted somehow,” said Dad, “the crowd had become very angry and somebody had knocked them out with magic. I guess she must have been on the edge or something and I found her standing over you.”

Breeze had been sitting right next to me. Her magic must have protected her somehow, I guess she wasn’t going to let herself get incapacitated by magic twice.

“What about Mum?” I asked.

“I think she’s just unconscious,” said Dad. “Did that bastard really get acquitted?”

“The prosecution wanted to question Ice ...” I started to say.

“The prosecution lawyer seemed to have it in for Winemakers,” said Faldren.

“... but that was a ‘conflicting interest’ and therefore no lawyers could ...”

“‘Conflict of Interest’,” said Dad, “it means that somebody is doing two jobs that may interfere with each other. For example, if your lawyer is also your enemy's lawyer. They may deliberately do a bad job of helping you because that would make it harder for you to fight your enemy.”

“The school board has hired all the lawyers who are allowed to work here,” said Faldren, “so the law suits the Haprihagfen have filed against them, mostly for not protecting our children from bullies, can’t proceed because the Haprihagfen can’t get a lawyer.”

“Feaces this means anybody can do anything to Winemakers in this state and can’t be prosecuted!” said Dad. “Will that subhuman sisterfornicator come after you again?”

“I don’t know.”
