Chapter 23

Brigham’s expectant expression froze in an instant. And even the cane he was leaning on fell to the ground.

“What are you saying? Can you just dismiss all the years Becky wasted on you with a casual ‘I never liked her? If you didn’t love her, why did you agree to marry her in the first place? How could you justify yourself to her?”

While feeling heartbroken, Brigham also felt that Becky had been treated unfairly.

He wasn’t an overly stubborn person.

If Sigmund had strongly refused to marry Becky, Brigham wouldn’t have pushed too hard.

That was the point. When Brigham initially proposed for Sigmund to marry Becky, it was for multiple reasons. Firstly, Brigham genuinely liked Becky. Secondly, he sensed Becky’s feelings for Sigmund and saw it as an opportunity to fulfill her wishes. And thirdly, it was a way to assist the Wood family.

Sigmund knew all of this, but he agreed readily.

And now Sigmund was telling Brigham that he didn’t love Becky at all.

Brigham almost fainted from anger.

“I simply don’t like her and that’s the truth,” Sigmund said.

However, these words reached Becky’s ears outside the door.

The water in her room had run out, and she was about to go downstairs. She noticed the illuminated light coming from the study at the end of the hallway. As soon as she approached, she heard the question asked by Brigham.

At that moment, Becky admitted to herself that she wanted to hear Sigmund’s response. Even if he had said he liked her a little, she would have felt that her time over the years hadn’t been. completely wasted.

But unfortunately, Sigmund didn’t grant her wish.

Along with that shattered wish, Becky loosen the last lingering trace of her hopeful thoughts.

Years of unrequited love and two years of marriage didn’t earn her an ounce of his affection.

Since Sigmund had spoken those words, it was evident that they were not meant to be together.

Becky was expressionless as she glanced at the closed door, where the voices continued to emanate from within. It was nothing more than the sound of Brigham trying to persuade Sigmund.

“What are you waiting for? Are you really in love withthat other person, as they say? If that girl likes

you, is it worth making you wait so long? Who has been by your side all these years? Do I need to remind

Wrigham asked.

Becky felt that there was no need for her to listen further, so she turned and went downstairs to get

some water.

After finishing a whole glass of water, as Becky returned to her room, Sigmund’s words of disliking her still echoed in her mind.

Becky thought to herself. “That’s right. Sigmund never has any feelings for me from the beginning to the end. Even when we were in bed, he called out Betty’s name.”

She knew that she had to let go completely.

Meanwhile, Sigmund and Brigham emerged from the study. And Sigmund didn’t hesitate for a moment, immediately leaving the house in his car.

Brigham sighed as he watched the car drive away. He believed that his stubborn grandson would surely regret it in the end.

The next morning. Becky opened her eyes as soon as the alarm clock rang.

It was a weekend, so she didn’t have to go to work.

Recalling everything that happened last night, Becky collected her thoughts and got out of bed to freshensup.

When she opened the bedroom door, it was exactly 8 o’clock. And Brigham was already up. He sat at the dining table with a smile, as if nothing had happened last night.

Becky greeted him and took a seat across from him.

Holding the glass of milk in front of her, Becky brought it to her lips and took a sip.

“Grandpa, there’s something you should already know, right?” Becky asked.

The moment Becky spoke, Brigham knew what she was referring to. He could even anticipate what she was going to say next.

“What is it? Go ahead and tell me,” Brigham replied.

Becky’s gaze lingered on Brigham for a moment before she spoke frankly, “I have divorced Sigmund.”

As soon as Becky’s words fell, Brigham paused, as his hand held the fork. Even though he already knew, he couldn’t help but ask. “Why is that?”

Becky chuckled and then said, “Grandpa, two people without feelings cannot continue being together. If I ever liked him, it was in the past. Now, like him, I have started to reassess this relationship. I’m certain that there is no need to continue. So we mutually agreed on a divorce, granting each other freedom.”

As Becky finished speaking, she also set down the warm cup in her hand. The temperature had cooled considerably since she first held it.

Even boiling water would cool down eventually. How could a relationship not end when there was no love between the people involved?

Brigham fell silent, feeling both pity and guilt toward Becky.

If he had known it would end up like this, he should never have made that request in the first place.

Becky spoke frankly, “Since Sigmurf and I are divorced now, I will move out today. It’s only natural that I can’t live here without the title of a wife.”

Becky’s father had left her a property in her name when he passed away.

She could easily move there.

After hearing Becky’s words, Brigham said, “Even if you’re not Sigmund’s wife now, you’re still a member of the Moolery family. You used to live here before you were with Sigmund, so why…”

Becky interrupted Brigham’s words. And her tone was gentle yet firm. “Grandpa, I appreciate your care all these years, but I can’t continue living here. I have a place to stay, so you don’t need to worry about me. I have finished my meal, so I’ll go and pack my things now. I won’t disturb you. Just continue your meal, grandpa.”

Brigham looked at Becky, who seemed so distant. And as much as he felt reluctant, he had no choice but to let her go..

It was undeniable that she had suffered too much here.

Brigham couldn’t force her to stay any longer.

Becky returned to her room and immediately began packing her things.

She didn’t have many things that belonged to her, so her small suitcase wasn’t filled with much.

She didn’t take anything that was bought by Sigmund or brought back by Brigham. She only packed a few clothes that she had bought herself.

The packing process was quick.

When Brigham saw Becky coming downstairs with her suitcase, he wanted to say something. But in the end, he simply approached her and gently patted the back of her hand.

“If you encounter any difficulties outside, you can always come back and tell me. Even though you’re divorced from Sigmund, you will always be my granddaughter in my eyes. Don’t ever become a stranger to me, Brigham said.

Becky smiled and nodded, extending her hand to give Brigham a hug.

Then she said, “I know, grandpa. I’m leaving now. I all have things to organize at home.”

Chapter 23

Brigham nodded reluctantly. And then he watched as Becky’s figure grew farther away.

He didn’t try to stop Becky because he believed that someone like Sigmund needed to taste a bit of his medicine.

If there were still a chance for these two to get back together, Brigham hoped that Becky wouldn’t be too soft–hearted and would give Sigmund a hard time.

“Some people only cherish something after they lose it. Since Sigmund is so heartless, let’s see who will be the one to suffer and regret in the end,” Brigham said.

Hearing that, the butler standing nearby chuckled softly and said, “You’re right, Mr. Moolery. Some people only realize the importance of someone when they no longer have them. They need to be stimulated and forced a bit. As for the outcome, it depends on whether Ms. Wood is willing to forgive.”

Upon hearing this, Brigham let out a mocking snort from his nose.

“If forgiveness is to be granted, Sigmund must be given a taste of his own medicine. He is so arrogant. If it were up to me, I would give him a good beating.”

With that, Brigham leaned on his cane and returned to the living room.
