Chapter 19

Clothes were sca t tered around the room, and the blanket was on the floor. Despite how the scene appeared, there wasn’t a hint of ambiguity about what had happened last night.

Half of Joshua’s body was dangling on the side of the bed, while Yvette had occupied over half of the bed,

Yvette became more alert instantaneously after noticing the scene inside the room.

“Mom, i-it’s my fault. I fell asleep. I-I’ll fix this right away.

Yvette immediately hopped off the bed, grabbed Joshua’s arm, and tugged at him forcefully.

Thudi

Joshua’s head hit the bedside cabinet with a thump.

Lauren’s eyes widened in horror. The delicate makeup on her face had failed to mask her darkened expression.

She hurried forward to help position Joshua on the bed and examined his body. Where were you knocked? Do you feel pain, Joshua?

His eyes remained shut, and no changes were observed on his face. He would not be able to tell even if he was in agony.

“Oh my goodness. There’s a bump on his head.”

Lauren became anxious when she felt Joshua’s scalp. She turned to look at Yvette, who was stunned.

With tears brimming in her reddened eyes, she said, “Joshua is a person. He’s not a toy. Do you think he cannot feel pain just because he cannot speak?”

Lauren could barely suppress her rage as she uttered those words Joshua was her bottom line, and Yvette had just offended her by crossing that line.

To an outsider, Joshua might be a person in a coma without any feelings, perhaps even a joke, but to Lauren, he was her son. He was the person she cared for the most in this world.

“I-I did not do that on purpose.

Yvette’s mind went blank. That was the only sentence she could come up with after being yelled at by Lauren.

However, Yvette realized how unconvincing her statement was when she saw the drawing of the tortoise on Joshua’s face.

This time, she knew she was in the wrong.

Lauren took a few deep breaths to calm herself. Ultimately, her heart softened as the pitiful sight of Yvette’s reddened eyes came into view. She said coldly, “Make a call to Yaeger and ask him to come over now.”

Yvette opened her mouth but immediately stopped herself from saying a word. She wanted to ask who Yaeger was and what his phone number was, but she decided to ask the housekeeper downstairs after giving it a second thought.

After Yvette left the room, Lauren dampened a handkerchief and wiped the lipstick marks off Joshua’s face. The tears on her eyelashes trembled as she failed to suppress herself from giggling.

Looking at Joshua, who was lying on the bed, she said in resignation, “Her drawings are so hideous. You’d probably be mad if you saw what she drew on your face. I can’t believe she did this to you. After all, you’re such a mature and hygienic person.”

A faint smile spread across Lauren’s face as she spoke. Then, she muttered remorsefully, “Was I too harsh on her just now? She must be afraid of me now. I think I ve frightened her with my reaction. Maybe she’ll be scared of you too if you’re awake since you’re always wearing a serious expression. Perhaps there’s a silver lining to this situation. She can stay close to you and keep you company while you’re unconscious. In this way, you won’t feel so bored too. Let’s cut her some slack since

you’re ten years older than her, and she had lost her parents at such a young age.”

After cleaning the lipstick marks off his face, Lauren helped Joshua change into a pair of fresh clothes before sitting at the bedside and chatting with her son.

“Mrs. Luxford, Dr. Booker is here.”

Yvene lingered downstairs because she was afraid of returning upstairs. She heard voices at the door and was mildly stunned when she saw the young man led into the house by the housekeeper.

She thought. “He’s already a private doctor at such a young age? I think he’s only a few years older than me.”

Under the gold-rimmed glasses, Yaeger Booker’s eyes shote when he saw Yvette.

At that moment, Yvette had changed into a clean casual outfit. Even without wearing any makeup, she appeared elegant and extremely attractive with a ruddy complexion. She looked like a ripe apple, which made one have the urge to pluck it and

savor it.
