Soul Searcher Book 1
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

I’m not sure if it was the shock of realizing I was telling Cassie the truth or some unknown factor, but she slept for nearly two hours before finally emerging from my bedroom. “Hey,” I said softly. “Are you okay? What happened?”

She shook her head. “Well remember how I mentioned I’ve been experiencing some really intense headaches; I don’t know if what is happening can be explained away as headaches any longer. I’ve never passed out from a migraine before and the pain that shot through my head felt like an explosion.” Worry flashes across her eyes as she tells me this.

“Is there anything I can do to help you?” I guide her to one of the chairs placed on one side of the island and make sure she’s seated before going to the fridge and grabbing her a bottle of water.

“No, I don’t think there’s anything you can do unless you have magical healing abilities...” She glances at me hopeful for a second before cracking the water bottle open and taking a drink from it.

“Sadly, I don’t.” A slightly lopsided grin is on my lips. “My father Lucian is a full angel; I can ask him if he knows of anything that can help you if you want me to...”

Cassie shakes her head no and sighs. “It’s weird to say but I only seem to get these searing shots of pain across my mind when you’re nearby. Is your demon trying to hurt me for some reason?” As she asks this, I anticipate her dashing for the front door, ready to run away from me screaming. Never in all my life have I met a human so accepting of who I am. Granted, I’ve never interacted with a human long enough to feel compelled to divulge my secrets before but still.

She looks at me curiously and I wonder what kind of thoughts are whirling around in that beautiful mind of hers before throwing my hands up in a show of surrender. “No, there isn’t one ounce of my being that wishes to do you harm, why would I want to hurt you when I’m head over heels in love you?” My eyes grow wide as I realize what I have just confessed to her. Her eyes go just as wide. “I, I...” I have no idea what to say but I won’t take the words back because I have told her the truth, I have totally, completely fallen in love with her.

The look she gives me though isn’t what I was expecting. I totally thought she’d freak out for me claiming this so early in our relationship, or whatever this is between us. She smiles widely, “What did you just say? Did you just say you love me?” She makes a girly, squealing sound as she jumps from her seat. She throws her arms around my waist and pulls me to her in a tight hug. “Do you mean it?” She asks as she steps back so she can look into my eyes.

“I’ve never meant anything more in my life than saying those words to you,” I say as I gaze deeply into her eyes.

“I love you too,” Cassie whispers as she places her hands on either side of my face and draws me to her before placing her lips upon mine and I am so thankful that we hadn’t had sex last night when we were so inebriated because being sober and making love to her is a memory I will cherish forever!

Cassie strolls out of the bathroom holding something in her hand, “hey Rim, what’s this? It’s beautiful,” she exclaims as she holds a necklace in her hand. Looking to see what she’s talking about, I become as still as a statue as I see what’s dangling from her hand, a silver chain and attached to it is the Moonstone amulet. I gasped. It’s producing a white, warm light. I stared in shock trying to recall what the girl had told me about which amulet did what. I begin to panic as I recall her words, ‘the Moonstone will create a radiant welcoming warm glow that feels like you’re bathing in moonlight. The Moonstone is the better of the two to utilize as it prods you towards the innocent, the good, and the pure souls that roam the earth.’ my eyes are wide in shock as I say “shit!” not realizing the word has been spoken out loud.

“What? What’s wrong?” Cassie hurries to my side as worry flashes in her eyes. I can’t say anything, I’m speechless as I continue to stare at the amulet. I vehemently shake my head no, “this can’t be!” I wrap my hand around the chain ripping it from her hands.

“Ouch! Rim what’s wrong. I’m sorry I touched it. I didn’t mean to make you mad. I just thought it was pretty and wondered how you found it. It’s not something sold around here, that’s for sure.” I can see emotion in Cassie’s eyes, and I try to calm my racing heart.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to just yank that out of your hand like that. And I’m not mad that you were holding it. I just, it’s, don’t worry about. I’m going to put it in my room. Don’t give it a second thought.” I leave her in the living room and quickly go to my bedroom where I place the amulet in the top drawer of the nightstand next to the bed. Walking back out to where she is still standing, I take a deep breath as I try to explain why I acted the way I did. “In the supernatural world we believe in amulets and charms. That’s what that necklace is. I thought it was a good luck charm but I’m having doubts about it now. I freaked out because we believe in karma and bad mojo and if another being touches your personalized amulet it can cause unwanted consequences for the one who touched it.” I’m making it up, not a word of what I just said to her is true and it’s tearing my heart in two knowing that I’m lying to her, but I can’t tell her what it really is, what it would mean for her.

“Okay. I get that,” Cassie says hesitantly. “I promise I won’t touch it again.” Pulling her to me I place a gentle kiss upon her lips before whispering ‘I’m sorry.’ I vow here and now that Samael will not know I have found the soul that he has been waiting for. I will figure out some lame excuse, tell him I’m giving up the search or something to that effect as I push away the fear of Cassie being exposed to him. Maybe I could suggest he try asking the witch of his to sort out something different for him to be able to achieve his mortality.

**

Cassie went back to her place about an hour ago. She had received a message from Ginny to get a coffee and chat, which is good. I’m hoping they will mend their friendship because Cassie seems lonely in a sense, there is a void that I cannot fill within her eyes. As soon as Ginny’s text popped up on her phone screen, a light lit up her beautiful blue sapphire eyes with a different kind of excitement than what I see when she looks at me. I encourage her to go do what she needs to so that maybe later we could meet up, do something fun. It being Sunday, I’m not sure what kind of trouble we could get ourselves into, but we can definitely give it a go.

It had completely slipped my mind that Samael had told me he would be coming down Sunday evening (today!) to visit with me and to check on my progression of tracking down ‘his’ pure soul. I truly did not remember until I heard my doorbell ring and opened it to see the Angel of Death standing on the other side. A surprised “shit” slips past my lips as I look up into the pale faced, iced blue eyes, metallic black hair hiding half his face in shadow and beastly frame that is Samael. “Shit dude, you nearly gave me a heart attack! Maybe next time you could, I don’t know, shoot me a text a few minutes before you ring my bell.” I stand frozen in the doorway as I stare at him.

A sly maniacal grin crosses his lips before he smirks, “Uh, Sunday dude. I said I was coming by to catch up, see how you’re doing in your search for me. Um... so, are you going to let me inside or what?” Samael arches an eyebrow as he leans against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest and his right ankle over his left as he allows his body to relax against the weather-beaten wood.

Forcing a small laugh, I’m finally able to shake myself from the shock of him standing in front of me and move out of the doorway, “Right, my bad. Come in. How have you been?”

“Eh, same ole same ole. Work has been keeping me busy. Constantly bouncing from here to there. That’s why I’m down here now. I’ve got quite a few souls I need to escort through to the Spirit Realm over the next few days. Thought we could hang in between the jobs while I’m here, ya know.”

I breathe a sigh of relief at hearing him state this. That means he isn’t down here because he is aware that I’ve found Cassie, or rather ‘his’ pure soul. “Cool man. Yeah, I could take you to this music venue I’ve happened across and then we could hit up this bar just about a block from here.”

“That definitely sounds like a plan bro. You going to invite that human you ‘don’t’ like to hang out with us? I am curious to see what this chick looks like, and I dying to meet the being that has captured your eye.” Samael waggles his eyebrows at me unaware that he has just caused my heart to stop beating for a second or two. “I’ve got a spot I crash at when I’m in this area. Planning on popping in there for a bit then I’ll be off for a few hours running some ‘errands’, but I’ll more than likely be finished by nine o’clock; will that be, okay?”

Nodding my head, I add a “sure” and then with a snap of his fingers, poof! Samael has disappeared from in front of me.
