Present-day

“Hold the hell up.” Aviry interrupted. “That bitch was warned, and now he’s pissed that he didn’t listen? Why the hell should Sarina and Mina be held accountable for his mistake. He’s the fucking alpha.”

“I agree,” Denver said. “A leader should take responsibility for his actions.”

I turned in my seat and smiled. “Exactly, but Marshal wanted revenge. He was just named alpha, and already his pack was being attacked. The allies his father built a relationship with would see him as a weak Alpha. His pack members would feel unsafe if he didn’t quickly resolve the issue. But I couldn’t let my best friend kill my mate.”

🌙Niro

Marshal and I ran through what woods in search of Sarina and Mina. We are both in our wolf forms to pick up a scent and see better. I just hope I find them first; maybe we can clear his shit up.

Alpha Gavin was poisoned with silver. The doctor doesn’t think he’ll make it—Marshal wants to avenge his father by killing Sarina and Mina. He wants someone hanging by their neck even if that person is innocent.

I paused my running and nodded toward the left. We can’t mind the link since we are not in the same pack, but I need to separate from him to find her by myself. I need to talk to her and find out what happened. Marsh huffed and continued straight forward.

It took me a while, but her scent was getting stronger. And if I can smell her, she could smell me. “Keep going, Ace. We need to get to them first.” My wolf growled and charged even faster. We dodged the trees and the boulders in our path. Until finally…

Ace spotted a white wolf running ahead of us. “There she is, Ace. We can—”

BOOM!

Ace and I were knock on our side. We rolled through the dirt and slammed into the hillside.

My wolf growled and looked toward our attacker. A sizeable sandy wolf, with blue eyes, snarled and snapped at us. She struck forward, ready to attack, but her head was knocked to the side by a white wolf that smelled of coffee and cream.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. I front of me, my mate, a dire wolf, stood firm and tall.

Her wolf’s white fur was glowing like the moon above us. Her grey sparkled as she looked down at us. A crescent moon with a star on its tip adorned her forehead.

“She’s gorgeous, ace thought. And she wants us to shift.”

I was excited and terrified at the same time. Dire wolves are temperamental, according to my studies. She could rip my head off my shoulders if I shifted into a human. But she towers over Ace, so either way, Sarina’s wolf could kill us. “How do you know?” I asked warily

Ace huffed. “I just do. It’s a wolf thing. Don’t worry; she won’t hurt us.”

“No, but Sarina will kill me.” He gave me back control, and I shifted back.

“Niro, what do you want,” Sarina asked. The sandy wolf beside her growled. “Mina, chill the fuck out and keep watch. I have unfinished business with this bitch.”

She crossed her arms and crouched down. “I told you I don’t want a mate. I’m doing this for you, so once again. I Sarina—”

“Wait!” I shouted. “You…you were right. The pack was attacked, and the former alpha is dying. How did you know?”

Sarina looked over at the sandy wolf. “An elder in our pack had a vision about a war. It terrified him, and he told us our people would be blamed. So, he wanted us to warn Blue Moon pack of the attack, and we tried to warn the alpha’s dumb-ass son. But now, we all will have to deal with the aftermath. So, we need to hurry back home to tell the elders.”

I pleaded. “Please tell me you didn’t –”

She cut her eyes at me. “We are the ones that warned him. Instead of tracking us down, go find the one who is setting us up.”

CRACK!

Sarina shot up from the ground. “We need to run.”

“Wait—”

“NO!” She looked back at me. “We will meet again, and when we do, I will reject our mate bond. You and I are not meant to be mated. I will only be a burden to your simple ass werewolf life.”

“Where is your pack? Where do you live? Are you from the day or night—” The sandy wolf beside her growled? Sarina nodded and jumped on the wolf’s back. Together they took off deep into the forest.

Ace whimpered as our mate fled. He wanted to follow her, but I didn’t want to lead the others to her. I won’t let any harms come to my mate. She’s right, we will meet again, and next time she will stay with me.

“Well, you obviously met again,” Denver said. “ If we really are your children, then you two eventually mated and created us.”

I reached for the water bottle and turned in my seat. “Aviry, would you like some water now?”

“Fuck you.” She’s so damn stubborn, just like her mother. “I’ll drink plenty of water when I get back home.”

I shook my head. “That place is not your home. Those people are not your family.” I placed the water back in the cupholder. “Denver and I are the only family you have left.”

“You are wrong about that. Where is Sarina.” Denver asked. “What happened to our mother?”

Something terrible.

Alpha Gavin’s murder changed Marshal.

Luna Kora couldn’t live without her mate. So she took her own life shortly after his funeral. Marshal failed to capture the guilty party, so a good portion of his pack fled the pack. They assumed that their former alpha’s death was an omen for the future of pack Blue Moon.

But Marsh was determined to prove them wrong. He instantly matured and took charge of the impending war.

The dire wolves have been assembling an army. Whether it’s for war or protection, it doesn’t matter. Marshal is set on destroying the dire wolf line. After the funeral, an anonymous letter was sent to him. It detailed how the drink was poisoned and blamed our Dire rivals for Alpha Gavin’s death.

Sarina and Mina warned us of this. They told us that their people would be blamed. And now we are on the brink of war with both the night and day dire clans. Marsh had the crazy idea of allying with some hunters. He’s gathered a handful of other supernaturals to aid him in destroying the dire wolves.

After a big debate with the various pack generals, they decided to use a cowardly fighting technique to disable their enemies’ wolves.

Unfortunately, my part in the war was creating a weapon that would disable the wolves. I was tasked with creating a fog that would paralyze the dire wolves, leaving just the human part intact. By using this drug, the dire wolves have no chance of survival.

“Marshal. Please think about this. We were warned about that attack. Those women also said the wrong people would be blamed.” I paced my best friend’s office. “We should meet with the dire clans and get to the bottom of this,

“This isn’t just about that attack. Those self-proclaimed royals are building an army. We need to attack them before they come for us.” Marshall shuffled through the paperwork. “Niro, the decision has been made. The war will begin in three days.”

“You are an Alpha Marshal. Change the decision.” I pleaded.

“No. I called you here because you are my best friend, a brother even. But I have been questioning your loyalty to our longtime relationship.”

He set down the papers. “I know you oppose this war, but I don’t understand why. They attacked my pack, and as an ally, you should be on my side. Now, will join us on the battlefield or not?”

I stopped pacing and looked at my friend with narrowed eyes. “I will always be on your side Marshal. But I will not fight in a meaningless war. Please don’t become a monster, my friend. There are children in the dire clans.”

“If you snip a flower from a stem, the flower will grow back eventually. But if pluck it is plucked from the earth, the entire flower will die.” Marshal picked up his papers again.

“I have your answer and your contribution, Orion. Please leave my territory immediately. Our alliance is terminated.”

And with that, I left my ex-best friend. Marshal transformed into a completely different person. He wanted to punish and kill, and I didn’t want to be his next target. I still have a pack that I need to protect, and all of the allies that my father obtained are backing Marshal.

So, what’s next, Niro? I can’t let Marshal kill an entire species. He’s grieving now, but he’ll be devastated when he realizes that he killed many innocent people. My father is the only one left on my side. I’ll go home and speak with him. Maybe we can convince Marshal to come to his senses.

“Alpha Orion.” Fred slowed the car down and turned in to a gas station. “We will be arriving at the packhouse soon. But we need gas.”

I nodded. “Hurry up. And grab some snacks.” I reached into my wallet and passed him a few bills. “Tell the others to fill up and keep an eye out for trackers.”

Fred left the car, and I cleared my throat. “ I made it back to my pack, and I spoke with my father. We had a big fight about the war. He took Marshal’s side over mine. So now I was officially alone in this. But I had a plan C.” I turned around in my seat.

“I spent hours in my lab, creating a cure for the paralysis. Three days later, the drug I called Peace was created. I designed it to counteract the first paralytic. I made a mistake by giving that fog to Marshal. And I had to fix it.”

🌙Niro

The war had already begun, according to my father. Marshal and his allies attacked both clans at the same time. Damn Sarina for not telling me which house was hers. But her wolf had a moon and star mark, so I’m taking a guess. The night isn’t that far away from my territory. If I can just make it there and release my new creation, we can stop the carnage.

A thick fog began to come into view in front of me. But this fog was unnatural. This was my weapon being used. I quickly covered my face with a gas mask. The coppery smell of blood was already tainting the air, and the screams and shouts of agony filled my ears. The growls and snarls of wolves in battle echoed, but it couldn’t see them.

“Marshal, what have you done,” I said to myself.

“It’s not too late. I can still save them.” I charged forward; I just have to center Peace in the middle of this field. And then the dire wolves can begin to heal themselves. The fog cloud was thick. I could barely see my own hands in front of me.

“This is impossible, I thought.” I stopped running and searched around me. “Fuck it. This is going to have to do.” I shrugged off my bookbag and unzipped the pouch. Peace was in a yellow canister that will explode once detonated.

I firmly grabbed the canister and the detonation switch. After switching on the buttons, I stood and tossed Peace into the air. I flipped the controller and pressed down on the button. The canister exploded, and a blue mist mixed in with the fog. The sky above me cleared, and the fog began to recede rapidly.

“Thank you, Moon Goddess.” I sighed.

“Niro?” I quickly turned around to see Marshal standing there with wide eyes.

From my other side. The sweet smell of coffee and cream approached me. I turned and faced that direction. Sarina cautiously approached me. Her face was bloodied, and her clothes were ripped from the claws of another wolf. “Niro.” She gasped.

“Kill that bitch Niro!” Marshal snarled. “She’s one of them. She killed my father.”

“You killed your own damn father, you bastard. And now you’ve killed all of these innocent people!” Sarina cracked her neck. “It’s time for you to be put down, you rabid dog!”

Both Marshal and Sarine growled.

“STOP!” I shouted. “This is madness. Marsh, what happened to your father was tragic, but these people were innocent. The only damn reason the dire’s created an army was to protect themselves from a war that a vison warned them about.”

Marshal stomped forward. “How the hell do you know this?” He growled.

I inhaled and exhaled heavily. “Because my mate told me this.” I nodded toward Sarina.

“MATE!?” Marsh roared. “You knew she was your mate that night. You helped them, didn’t you.” He palmed his face and fell to his knees. “You poisoned my father.” He whispered.

“No Marshal—”

“YES!” Sarina shouted. I looked back, confused. “Your best friend helped. Together we killed your fucking dad, and if we had enough wolfsbane, I would’ve taken out your entire pack!”

“IT WAS SILVER, YOU FUCKING BITCH!” Marshal pulled at his hair.

“The deadliest poison to ingest for our kind. My dad’s inside literally burned from the inside. His stomach, his heart, every fucking organ in his body! Do you know how much agony he was in? My mother had to put him out of his misery!”

Marshal slowly rose from the ground. “And my mother, the strongest, kindest woman on this planet, killed herself!”

He wiped his eyes. “But I will avenge their deaths by killing you BOTH!” He spat. “Starting with you Ni—” Marshal paused and looked down.

A silver dagger was protruding from his chest. It was yanked out, and my heart lurched as Marshal fell on his knees. I was frozen, unable to think of what to do next.

“Sarina, we need to run now!” Mina stood behind a shocked Marshal. She the dagger on her pants. “Hurry up!”

“MARSHAL!” I cried out. I lunged toward him but held a shaky hand up.

“Are you happy now? I’m going to die, you filth!” a single drip line of blood ran down the side of his mouth. “Go ahead and run off with your mate. I hope your life is filled with pain and suffering.”

The look of hate and disgust was written all over his face. I never thought Marshal would feel this way about me.

A light touched pulled my attention. “We need to run. Come with me.” Sarina said. The sounds of howls in the distance had us both turning in that direction. Marshals men were heading this way. This wasn’t going to end well for us.

I looked at Sarina and nodded. “Anything to protect you.”
