Chapter Twenty: A shocking revelation

I hope you are happy now, Thomas.”

I said that as soon as I picked up the phone.

“What do you mean? I warned you, Regina, didn’t I? I warned you about your little toy boy; he event calls you baby,he made a mockery chuckle. “How ironic; I told you you’d go down, didn’t I?”

So you did this, Thomas.”

“And who said I did? I guess you didn’t know the people you flock around with.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“This is a win for me, you know. Every move you make wrongly creates a path for me to win this. When I do, you’ll be the first to leave this town because of your recklessness with your private life. Wait until the parents whose kids claim to love you see this. I guess you know what that means.”

Angela hurried in through the door; she must have seen it as well.

“I’m so sorry about Regina

נו

“I just got off the phone with Thomas.”

“Did he say he did it?”

“No, but I don’t get it; if he didn’t do this, then who did?”

That shouldn’t be your utmost concern now; we have more pressing issues.”

“What?”

“The electoral body has reacted to the video; they have called to have a meeting with you.”

“Oh shit! I’m fucked with my repetition of the mayor’s position. What am I going to do now?”

“But how did this even get out? Did Evans have CCTV installed in his home that you didn’t know

about?”

“What if he did? And worse, what if it’s been his plan all along?”

“We can’t just stay here, assuming.”

“Yeah, but first I have a meeting.

The meeting with the electoral director was just as I had predicted–brief and straight to the point. According to them, a better judgment would be passed as soon as the chairman returns, so I was placed on an indefinite suspension until further notice. This was indeed not good for me. I stumped out of the premises in tears. The keys to the car trembled in my grip as I navigated my way to Evans apartment. He should be happy for what he has done.

As Evans opened the door, I rushed in on him.

“Hey, hey, calm down. I saw the video and the unfair judgment of the electoral body.

“Why did you do it?” Tears coursed down my cheek.

“What are you talking about?”

“Look at this.” He watched the video through my phone.

“I have been suspended because of this.”

“I know, I know, still wondering how that got out.”

“I should be asking you that. This is your home; show me the cameras. Where did you hide them? How much did he offer to give you for you to betray me this way? I thought I could trust you.”

I watched every corner of his living room. “Stop this madness, Regina! I thought you trusted me. How could you even think that I would do that to you and to us

“Who are you working for?”

I stumped into his room, moving around restlessly, unsure of what to do.

“Hey… Hey, calm down, please. I know how you feel. But what we shared was not a mistake. I don’t regret it a bit. And I still cherish every moment that we spent together. I might be a bit off sometimes, but I didn’t do this. Trust me. What would I gain from hurting you like this?”

I rested in his arms as I wept silently. Once again, I watched as my life went down the drain while Thomas was out there right now celebrating.

“I’m so sorry for coming up to you like that. I was furious. I thought you had done it.”

“It’s okay, I understand.”

“And yet again, he wins.”

“Who do you speak of now?”

“Thomas.

“So this has always been about him? I’m beginning to think the reason you are here in my arms is still because of him.”

I left his arms, looking directly into his eyes

“You know it’s not.”

“Are you with me because you want me or because you do not want to feel lonely after Thomas left you?”

“Why would you ask me that?”

“Do you love me, Regina?”

I clearly did not see that coming as I looked away.

Chapter Twenty: A shocking revelation

“Answer me! Or is it always about Thomas?”

Evans…”

“You haven’t answered me, Regina.”

“That’s because I don’t know. I’m going through a lot.”

“Did you just tell me that you don’t know?”

“Please, Evans, can we not talk about this right now? Please, Evans, let’s not do this now.”

He said nothing, only nodded, looking away into nothing in particular, as he did not rest his eyes.

I walked towards the door and said, “I have to leave now,”

“Where are you going?”

“There is someplace I need to be.”

“You are going to see Thomas, aren’t you?

“I need to get to the bottom of this, Evans. I need to somehow.”

“I can come with you. I do not want you to be by yourself now.”

“No, I’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure? I want to do this with you.”

“I’m sure, Evans, I want to do this on my own.”

He nodded in response as I walked away. As soon as I got home, the experience of having a bad day weighed on me so much that I threw out stuff in anger, letting it crash and scream as my head spanned.

The press greeted me as soon as I stepped out. The news is the talk of the town now. The aspiring mayor, Mrs. Regina Miles, now separated and contesting against her husband, now has a video of her in an intimate position with an unknown lover.

“Mrs. Regina, would you tell me how this went out?” One of the interviewers rushed toward me.

“Are you and Mr. Thomas now officially divorced?” Another said.

“Most people say you were caught cheating with this man. That’s why the video was posted as evidence. How true is this?”

I shuffled myself through the crowd, holding down the tears in my eyes. I locked myself in the car as soon as I got in. Right now, I should not be out here all alone in tears. Thomas had caused me pain every other day; even in our distance, he still had a way of pulling me down. I knew I needed to break free once and for all, and according to Rick, there was only one way I could do that. Just then it struck me; my mind was made up. There was something I knew I needed to do to be free from the clutches of Thomas. I turned on the ignition, zooming away from the press with just one destination on my

mind. The home 1 and Thomas had shared together for many years was gone; it was time to let go of him. Time to finally tell Regina’s story without Thomas Miles in it.
