I heard. “We look for girl in picture. Have seen?”

What? Are they recruiting guys who can’t speak English or one’s who thought people from Brazil were dumb.

“Nao, eu nao tenho,” Matheu told them.

I can’t believe he told them no in Portuguese.

“Hindi, hindi ko,” Madrid answered.

I wanted to laugh at Madrid saying No to them. They were probably wondering what country they landed in.

Manuel answered next. Pointing to Matheus. “He said no.” He pointed to Madrid. “He said no.” He pointed at himself. “And, I told you guys earlier I hadn’t -”

The guys didn’t wait for Manuel to finish, they waved and walked away.

Matheus, Manuel and Madrid started immediately started having a conversation in their own language and Manuel translating for each of them even though he was answering completely wrong for Madrid.

I was trying hard not to laugh but I ended up having to put the pillow up to my face to keep quieter. Those guys were too much. They had the monster’s men totally confused...the monsters men. Shit! I knew exactly who they were. I called them Mutt and Jeff. I’m sure Madrid knows who they are by name. I didn’t care to learn their names.

It took awhile before Matheus came in. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah. I was trying to remember Mutt and Jeff’s real names,” I answered softly.

“Madrid knows their names.”

I nodded my head. “I figured he would. I never cared to know them. Plus, it was enough for me to know it pissed them off.”

He laughed. “I better get back outside. These idiots usually come back to see if we’re hiding anything.” He looked at the monitors. “And, Mutt and Jeff are not done acting stupid.”

He walked back outside and they started talking in their native tongue with Manuel interpreting for them again. Definitely better than television.

I heard something fly through the air, hoping the men knew to duck and if what was thrown or shot was a weapon.

“Hey, why did you hit me for?” Manuel yelled out.

“Eles São são loucos,” Matheus answered Manuel.

Then it was Madrid’s turn. “Sila ay bat tae mabalin.”

I was trying not to laugh again. I made sure the switch was on to cancel out the noise in the house. Each of them had called the guys crazy, with Madrid adding in bat shit crazy. Hell yeah! Definitely better than television.

’What did they say? They would be better to keep their mouths shut. I won’t hesitate to kill them, and I can kill them even the big guy!” one of the monsters men shouted.

“They were wondering why you hit me. It’s not very neighborly. Wait! You’re not from this area are you?” Manuel answered with a little attitude.

I could just imagine what Matheus and Madrid were thinking. They wondered how the ass-wipes could kill them without using a gun. I could promise whoever it was. I would shoot them where they stood and not feel a bit bad about it. I would protect my three M’s - Manuel, Matheus and Madrid. I’m sure they would love the name I gave them. I think three musketeers would be a better name for them. I was waiting for what the shit-heads were going to say next. It was sure taking them awhile, probably trying to come up with something nice to respond to Manuel’s question.

“We are looking for this girl, have you seen her?” Ass-hat number one asked.

“Don’t you guys work in grids? You’re the third person to ask us in the last three or four hours. We will tell you like we did the others-”

Manuel was cut off. “Nao,” Matheus answered rudely.

Then there was Madrid. “Hindi, pipi ka.”

Well they got the run around from Manuel, a rude no from Matheus and a no, you dumb shit from Madrid. When these guys look up what they said, if they can remember everything, the boys might be in trouble. I was wondering how many ways Manuel could not lie. He was good about doing the run around.

“We need to check your house. We need to find this girl. She’s not stable and has wandered off,” shit-head number lied.

“Por que eu deveria deixá-lo entrar na minha casa? Eu não tenho que fazer nada,” Matheus spat out, fed up with these guys.

“Oo, kung ano ang kanyang sinabi,” Madrid agreed with Matheus.

What are you doing Matheus? You can’t tell them they can’t check the house. I had to admit what Madrid said had me almost peeing myself. ‘Yeah, what he said.’ What a good come back.

My heart was pounding and I hoped they couldn’t hear it. My hands were sweaty and I seriously was about to pull my guns and shoot these idiots. But, I didn’t want to have to answer to the council. It would mean I would have to go to the village, a very bad idea. There were young men trying to make some bills. I might as well turn myself in if I shot them. Crap! I didn’t know where to go, then I remembered.

I stopped listening and closed the panel on the wall.

I grabbed my backpack and my small rucksack and tiptoed to the escape tunnel, sliding the false wall open and looking for something to hold on to. Thank goodness Matheus had included four straps at different lengths. I could adjust the strap if I heard anyone by the false wall and could connect my rucksack to one of the harnesses.

I connected to everything, hoping the guys didn’t forget dinner. Don’t judge, when you panic your mind is all over the place. I got into the tube and slid a ways down the tunnel. I didn’t want to be spotted if they found the wall, so I made sure I was around a bend in the tunnel and so was my rucksack. I attached everything to the side of the tunnel where the clasps were. If the ass-hats thought they could pull the straps up and find someone then they were sadly mistaken. Matheus had thought of everything.

As soon as I heard the door open into the tree house, a metal plate slid soundlessly across the opening to the tube. I was amazed by my mate. I wondered if he had a hand held remote in his pocket or if the door was rigged to shut the tube from this side, something I would ask about later.

“What’s that smell?” one of the ass-hats asked.
