Chapter 52 

Ashton’s POV.

Today has been a whirlwind of activities. Organizing this little show of surprise for Josie and also attending to the patients and a few other emergencies, all exhausted me, if my quivering legs are any indication. 

I did my best to forget Josie’s hot rejection this afternoon and proceed with the preparation. 

‘I dare you not to do it. My lycan taunts me. Hell, he has been doing that since today especially whenever I want to talk myself out of doing this for Josie. 

“I don’t remember asking for your opinion. I fire back, already tired of our endless banter. My lycan is so strong headed. 

‘Anything that makes her happy and her wolf, you’ll do or else… 

I block him off immediately, knowing his next line of words will be a threat. 

I rub at the lines of exhaustion on my face, watching as the Decores and his staff bring the indoor patio to beauty. The fairy lights overhead gleam, coating the place with a special kind of warmth. 

The preparation stress sure didn’t end there, I went about inviting all my doctors, nurses, and some patients whose condition have lessened to the point that they can waltz to the patio for the little celebration and welcome party, and also patients‘ visitors. 

By the time I finished lumbering from one ward to the next, hell, my legs were about to give out. 

I came back onto the patio, monitoring the decoration frenzy going on. 

A little before the sun tailspin into the horizon, the pastries arrived, overloading the air with its irresistible. 

Maroma. 

The bite of Piazza I took informed me of its deliciousness and I gladly paid them. 

“Thank you, Alpha. I’m actually overwhelmed now knowing you truly like the pastries. beaming from ear to ear. 

e older woman says, 

I know this means a lot to her, getting a review from an alpha, It doesn’t always come by, given how most alphas and beta look down at these local shops. 

A little pat on her shoulder, I said. “You’re welcome.”

When the woman leaves, I refocus my attention on the grand work of tonight. My mind bubbled with confusion about whether Josie would love what we did. 

“You fool, I told you she’ll like it. Women love surprises. My lycan prattles.

I still don’t know how that annoying thing manages to get out of its blockade in my head. 

‘Let’s watch and see, then. I grumble a response. The news about the welcoming show of my language teacher has sputtered throughout the hospital and I already knew that people would love to know who that person is, that’s for those who don’t know her yet. 

Amidst all these though, I’m more concerned about Josie’s reaction. 

Will she love it? 

Phew, once the decoration is already shining and looking flawless, I decided to go for today’s lesson. Hell, staying even in Josie’s midst, breathing literally the same air with her scares the shit outta me. 

I always put a leash on my control whenever we’re together, so I don’t snap. 

In her office, I lumbered around when I didn’t see her and I waited.

However, before she reached her office I already smelled her precious and tantalizing lavender scent. 

A paused moment gave us the chance to look into each other’s eyes. 

Always beautiful, I thought to myself before breaking the silence. 

After we settled into our respective seats, she began the lesson. 

I made my way outta the office when she rounded up our session for today. 

Looking at Josie’s shocked expression now, my heart flutters. Her startled eyes roam around the patio with al gaped mouth. 

A trench forms on her brows when we all echo the word. 

“Surprise!” 

A smooth ovation followed the word and I could see everyone casting a happy smile at her.

“Uh…everyone…um…” She says, turning into a stuttering mess. 

“Ahh, I love that look on her face. My lycan spits, wagging its tail.

Josie became a stuttering mess as she overloaded her eyes with the crowd here and the decoration sprinkling 

comfort over us. 

Before I can step in, my assistant here in the hospital, Dr. Cronus, steps up to do the job for me.

“Ms. Rose, don’t be shy.” He inches close and clasps his hand around her arm, pulling her close. 

I tried to make a move, but that’d be insane of me to do because Dr. Cronus is just chastely holding Josie.

I’m only jealous because I want to be the one holding her but I know after what happened earlier she wouldn’t want to close in on her now, much less touch her. 

This is just a little welcome party, Alpha Doc decided to pull up.” He throws his hands around before dropping his eyes back at Josie. “At least, with this, you wouldn’t ever feel left out whenever you come to the hospital.” 

“Oh, that’s incredible,” Josie stutters, pulling her eyes to the ground. 

A small smile peeked through my lips as I watched her shy display. “Thanks everyone. 

We all chorused back with me digging my heels into the floor to keep from moving to her yet. 

“So, why don’t tell us about yourself, Ms. Rose?” 

One of the patients asked and that pricks my curiosity. I know nothing much about the Josie of today. The one with pale skin and 5ft 6 inches in height, curly brown hair, and overly confident in herself. 

Josie blushed, fiddling with her fingers. She muted for a while as if weighing her options. 

Ms. Thorn hurries over to the table of pastries and carries one of the pastry trays, moving around and serving 

them. 

“Alpha.” She bows a little, pushing the tray up and I manage to take to soufflé, chewing and feeling it melt in my 

mouth. 

“Ahem!” Josie clears her throat and that lures my attention back to her. 

“You all already know my name, I guess,” She offers a shy smile- that kneeing smile that always gets to me.

“Of course, who in the city doesn’t know the popular language teacher?” one of the patients- visitors speak. 

Hellexively, my brows shrivel. So Josie is that famous? I think to myself. 

“Thanks…..” she laughs, 

“Theard you perfected in five languages, how come that’s possible? I bet it’ll always to difficult for me if I were you” The woman cambles on. 

“It was difficult at the beginning but I got attuned to it, ma’am. Your mind balances with the various languages once you practice always.” 

Everyone is in wonder as she gives a little detail about how she began learning Spanish which, according to her was the toughest she had learned, 

All the while, I just stand by the corner, watching her talk and even enjoying it. Fantasizing about us. About us. 

Josie’s POV 

I never really expected such a mind–blowing surprise from Ashton. 

I nearly had a heart attack 

a while ago until the incandescent lights came on, revealing everyone’s faces. 

By the goddess, Ashton outdid himself here. How did he manage to organize this on just short notice? 

They had said it’s a welcoming show and a means of saying Congratulations for gaining a decent office while working for an alpha like Ashton. 

I can’t seem to shake the thoughts growing in my head. I honestly want to know why he’d do such a thing. 

Since I’ve been in here chattering with the people who paid attention to me, Ashton hadn’t made a move to step close to me. 

He was just secluded in the corner while discussing with…what’s his name again? 

Ahh, yes, Dr. Cronus.

Occasionally, I did feel his eyes burning a track on my body, and whenever I turned our eyes locked before we briefly tugged them away. 

“It must taken special kinda skill to attain that fit.” Mrs. Albert, who found interest in my skill tonight, said, oblivious to my thoughts. 

“I tell you, Mrs. Albert, it has helped me since I perfected it,” I said, giving her a good–natured smile.

“I’d like to become friends with you, smart ass. I can understand why Doc seems to always chant praises to your 

name. You’re such a sweet girl.” 

The woman’s words make me startled and my eyes go saucer–wide. 

“He…talks to you about me?” I ask, seemingly shocked. 

“You don’t know?” She seems shocked. “My dear, doc Ashton never misses a day not to sing praises to your name in my ears. It got me curious, you know, I wanted to know who this marvelous woman is. So, when the opportunity to know you swung in, I couldn’t say no.” She giggles after babbling. 

Sudden warmth coats my cheeks and I find it hard to speak. “That’s incredible.” 

“Ahh, it shouldn’t surprise you much…men love it when a woman is good at what she does and…is beautiful. I’m guessing Doctor Ashton is interested in you. Do you perhaps have a mate?” 

“What?” 

I’m just about to answer her question when my nostrils pick up on a distinct scent among the flood of scents in the patio and the hairs on my neck stand up as I feel a presence behind me. 

“Mrs. Albert, your time out has elapsed.” Came Ashton’s voice. Hearing it crumpled something inside me all too quickly. It damaged my little 

defenses. Goosebumps fill my skin instantly and my heart flutters. 

“Doc, not now. I’m actually enjoying my time with Ms. Rose.” The woman whines. 

Ashton lets out a chuckle. “It’s obvious but I still can’t let you overstress yourself here. You have to join others 

and go back to your ward.” 

She pouts her dry lips, giving Ashton a doe eyed look. Relenting, she turns to me and says 

“I guess I’ll call it a night now, Ms. Rose. But I must tell you, I love our chats. Can we have more of that? Besides 

I’m quite interested in learning new languages, who knows I might work with a foreign company tomorrow.

I burst into laughter, this woman sure knows her way with words and how to make someone laugh. 

“You’re way too old for that, Mrs. Albert,” I say. 

“Oh, dear don’t remind me of that.” 

The instant I give her my word that I’ll drop by every once in a while, she smiles and leaves with the nurse. 

“She’s quite the gregarious one but lovely.” Ashton offers, standing beside me. 

From the corner of my eye, I see him enjoying a sip of his drink. 

Thank you for preparing such a warm welcome for me.” I express my gratitude. 

Ashton nods.

“It’s my pleasure, Ms. Rose…besides…” 

Ashton wants to turn and face me but the abrupt move makes his fingers brush mine, sending a jolt of electricity 

through me. 

I shift quickly, maintaining a good distance between us. 

“I’m sorry.” He says.

“No…….” I put up my hand to stop him, my heart roaring, awakening my wolf. “It’s okay. We make mistakes, I 

guess… 

He inches close, wanting to dominate my space but my phone cut him off, giving me the opportunity to escape his presence. 

I bring it up and see Diego’s name on the screen. 

“Hi, babe.” Diego’s voice comes in once I pick up the call. 

Worse yet, the call is in speaker mode. I peek up at Ashton and I see his darkening features. 

“Still at the hospital? I’m actually here. Mind if I pick you up?” he asks, making my belly flutter. 

“That sounds good, I’ll be out soon.” 

At that, I end the call. I take my bag and hurry away even as Ashton calls my name.

What I didn’t know was that Ashton followed me outside as I flushed myself in Diego’s
