Chapter 0014 

Samantha’s heart clenched. She hadn’t expected Kendrick to check her father’s medical expense records. She wondered if he hated her so much that he wouldn’t give her the slightest chance. 

The last sliver of hope in her heart was ultimately snuffed out. The throbbing ache in her chest was far more unbearable than the pain across her face. The four years that passed didn’t diminish any ounce of the agony brewing inside. 

She choked back the turbulent waves of emotions in her heart. She deliberately pretended to be annoyed and sneered, “So, is this why you summoned me? Was it not for my talent?” 

Kendrick’s beady eyes narrowed as sparks of anger flew. “Are you still keeping up your act, Samantha? Then, explain to me what’s going on here!” 

Samantha raised a proud chin and declared, “Mr. Ford, this is a private matter. I don’t see the need for me to provide you with an explanation. 

As you are more concerned about these baseless accusations than how much wealth I can generate for Ford Corporation, it seems that there’s no reason for me to stay.” 

With that, she turned to leave. Suddenly, a powerful force seized her wrist. She found her entire being enveloped in Kendrick’s warmth. 

Startled, she was dumbfounded for a brief moment. Returning to her senses, she pushed him away. 

Her voice was laced with a trace of fury. “Mr. Ford, please show some respect! You’re the president of Ford Corporation! How do you think your stock will fare if the reporters caught wind of your unbecoming character?” 

“Hah! You can’t threaten me with this, Samantha.” Kendrick’s voice was like a cello–elegant and melodious. 

“It’s unbelievable. We’ve not seen each other for a few years, and your acting skills have improved. You used to pretend to be fragile and delicate when you were around me. You’ve hid your true colors well 

Samantha interrupted him in a cold voice, “I’m sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about. If you’ve only hired me to make such specious remarks, it seems the Ford Corporation is on the brink of a major upheaval.” 

Kendrick’s gaze continued to sweep across her b*dy. Samantha’s heart trembled,

She needed to stay at Ford Corporation, so she had to dispel Kendrick’s suspicions. She doubted if he would believe her story. She thought that she might have been too harsh with her words and feared that he intended to dismiss her. 

She couldn’t help but regret her response from earlier. She thought about the

years she spent overseas, surviving with Nate all on her own. If it hadn’t been for Francis‘ help at the beginning, she might not even be alive right now, and no one would know. 

The results she had achieved with difficulty demonstrated the extent of her efforts. She was crowned the champion of the “Goddess” fashion show. It was a highly prestigious competition. 

She had experienced racial discrimination, cultural differences, and language barriers. Still, she worked hard to adapt to her new life in a foreign country. She had strived to understand the cultural values of another nation. 

It was no surprise to her to have achieved such results. She wondered if this was enough to move him. 

Kendrick’s gaze finally to 

away from her. The edge in his voice dissipated. He reverted to his usual calm, impenetrable demeanor as the president. 

“In that case, please explain your relationship with the Duncans. At the Ford Corporation, we will not hire someone who might be an industrial spy. It doesn’t matter how talented they may be.” 

Samantha ran her fingers through the curly locks draped over her temples. She flashed a charming smile. Kendrick’s eyes seemed to waver. 

He cursed in his mind and was astounded by how enchanting she had become. after all these years. The thought of her attracting other men’s attention made him burn with jealousy. He yearned to snatch her and lock her at home for himself. 

She calmly began, “It’s true that I have connections with the Duncan family. When I left the orphanage, it was the president of Duncan Group who sponsored me, as well as 100 other orphans. 

“I don’t know if the others have forgotten about him. But when I heard that he had encountered some trouble, I couldn’t stand by. I’m not an ingrate. I wonder if this explanation satisfies you, Mr. Ford?” 

A corner of Kendrick’s l*ps hooked up into a smirk carrying a mocking undertone. He clapped his hands and said, “What an excellent story.”

Samantha didn’t pay him any attention and maintained a nonchalant smile. She replied, “But I’m curious to know more about the relationship between you and Ms. Duncan. It seems she’s quite important to you.” 

“Hah, indeed. Back then, she left after making a terrible mistake. No matter how many years it takes, I will make her pay for it!” 

She had dared to seduce another man in public. She then evacuated without any regard for his favor. He was determined to settle the score with her no matter what. @ 

Samantha’s eyelashes quivered. She should have known better than to hold any expectations for such a man. 

She thought that it had been no more than a minor prank. Yet, he employed someone to ruin her looks, almost killing her in the process. Moreover, he seemed adamant not to let her go now. 

She couldn’t help but return the sarcastic smile. “Is that so? Then you might be setting yourself up for disappointment, Mr. Ford.” 

Kendrick squinted his eyes, his victorious gaze making her uncomfortable. “Oh? I wonder why you’re saying this, Ms. Meadows?” 

As he said that, he intentionally emphasized “Meadows“. 

Samantha didn’t seem to mind. “That’s because Ms. Samantha Duncan is dead. 

She wasn’t particularly loud, but it felt like a bomb had gone off in the large office. The air fell silent and no one spoke. 

Kendrick’s eyes widened somewhat as he stared at her in disbelief. He thought that she was being absurd. 

He wondered how she could be dead when she was standing before him in the flesh. He didn’t find the joke even remotely funny. Kendrick found himself unable to relax, feeling as though metal chains were tightening around his heart. 

After a long silence, he spoke again. “Ms. Meadows, what might you mean by that?” 

“It’s exactly as it sounds. I’ve tried to repay the Duncan family–you can’t expect me not to know Ms. Duncan. I went to university on a government scholarship to study abroad. I stayed in Meriscape, where I happened to meet Ms. Duncan by chance. This was four years ago.” 

With a sense of urgency, he pressed, “What happened after that?”

“Hah, after that? At the time, Ms. Duncan was covered in injuries. She was in such a pitiful state, and she kept cradling her belly. I didn’t understand why at first, until she told me she was pregnant.” 

“What? Pregnant?” 

Memories from four years ago replayed in his mind like a movie reel. He recalled that passionate night before she left. Suspicion sprouted in his heart. O 

“That’s right, she was pregnant. I was a broke student at that time, and the help I could offer was limited. Up until she gave birth, she still weighed less than 100 pounds. Do you think she experienced a smooth delivery under such conditions?” 

Kendrick felt his vision blur. He heard himself asking in a low voice, “Did she have a difficult delivery?” 

“Neither mother nor child survived.”
