Chapter 527 With a Hidden Agenda

Inside the hospital room, there was a warm and gentle light.

Byron was a bit tired. He reclined on the hospital bed, watching Athena as she arranged contract documents neatly.

He felt like he was in a daze as if he was back in the past.

Seeing that he hadn't made a sound, Athena looked over with a puzzled look. Their eyes met for an instant. Athena smiled without saying a word, "What are you staring at me for?"

"You look good," Byron answered.

Athena clicked her tongue and sorted the documents that Byron didn't need to handle to one side, and the ones he needed to handle were divided into several parts. "These contracts will be handled based on your recovery status, deciding how many to deal with each day."

"Okay," Byron replied, looking quite amenable. "Stop fussing. Come over and let me hug you."

Athena grumbled. "You're too old to want hugs."

Even though she said that she still walked over.

Byron wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his cheek on her belly. "I'm very fragile now. I need a lot of your hugs."

Athena patted his head.

"There's something I think I should tell you."

"What is it?" Byron said, holding Athena, seeming very comfortable.

"Freya's mom was found dead today in a lake at a suburban wetland park," Athena replied.

Byron was taken aback.

He then let go of Athena. "How did you find out?"

"It was a big fuss. It was trending on social media. When Miss Bates went to identify the body, she was photographed and looked very distressed." Athena continued, "She probably knows you've woken up. Do you want to give her a call?"

As she said this, Athena handed Byron his phone.

Byron glanced at the phone, then at Athena. He didn't take the phone. Instead, he hugged Athena again. "Tomorrow. I'll have someone from the company check it out."

"You're so heartless." Athena teased, twiddling Byron's ear. "After all, she was someone you cared about."

Byron then pinched Athena's waist.

"Ouch!"

Athena slapped his hand.

"I've already explained. You know she can't let go of me, yet you still push me to call her. What are you planning? Are you still thinking about breaking up with me?" His tone sounded both angry and wronged.

Athena couldn't help but laugh.

"What agenda could I have? Didn't you say she was your life-saver? Now that her family is facing such a big issue, shouldn't you ask about it? What are you guilty about?" Byron was speechless.

"You always beat me in the arguments!"

He hugged her even tighter.

"Aren't you going to ask how her mom died?" Athena didn't intend to stop.

"How did she die?"

"The current public opinion is that her son stole the money Miss Bates gave her for cancer treatment, and in her despair, she committed suicide by jumping into the lake. Coincidentally, the wetland park is old and virtually without surveillance equipment. Also, the park is far from Miss Bates' mother's home. Why would she run over there to jump into the lake?"

Upon hearing this, Byron furrowed his brow slightly. "Did the police figure out the cause of death?"

"So far, there's only a case announcement, no specific explanations," Athena replied.

"Do you suspect that Freya's mother was murdered?" Byron asked.

Athena hesitated for a moment. "I just have a feeling something is off. If it was murder, what if the target was the Bates family? Could Miss Bates also be in danger?"
