Chapter 284 Why Is Alice Crying?

Caspian's expression turned gloomy.

Evie, on the other hand, did not want to talk to him. She slammed shut the door of the nanny car with a bang.

The driver set off, and the car started to move.

Caspian stood rooted to the spot and clenched his fists tightly.

Eventually, something crossed his mind. He wearily loosened his grip and let go of his clenched fists.

Byron returned to the private room.

Brad and a few others were engaged in an animated discussion, but he couldn't catch what they were saying.

As Brad caught sight of Byron, a playful grin spread across his face. "Why the long face? Can't bear to let go, huh?" He teased. "She's adorable," Byron said honestly as he took a seat.

"You're not getting any younger, my friend. It's about time you embraced fatherhood." Brad remarked sincerely.

Byron chuckled mockingly, "I'm not fortunate enough for that in this lifetime."

"Nonsense!" Brad frowned. "I know you still have feelings for Athena, but as someone who's alive, you have to move forward."

Byron remained silent.

"But, you know what? Mia does bear a slight resemblance to you, Mr. Crawford." An elderly man beside Brad pointed out bluntly. "Really?" Brad mumbled to himself.

He didn't personally see the resemblance to Byron, but when Mia smiled, her eyes reminded him of the late Athena. "Haven't you noticed?"

"I'm an old man who's in my seventies, and my eyesight is failing. Honestly, I can't see it clearly!"

Brad burst into laughter along with the others.

Byron joined in the laughter, though inside, a cold wind blew through the void in his heart.

Just then, Byron's gaze shifted. He caught sight of something clipped to the cuff of his right suit sleeve.

Byron reached out and retrieved it.

It was a butterfly hairpin with sparkles.

Encrusted with colorful gemstones, it shimmered like genuine diamonds.

It must have been a gift from Mia.

Byron smiled, and put the hairpin back into his suit pocket.

Back at home, Alice's heart sank as she discovered that there was only one of the butterfly hair clips left from the pair Rose had given to Mia.

She had heard Jaxson talk about it.

This pair of butterfly hair clips were adorned with rare gemstones and were very expensive. Rose had even enlisted the skills of a master artisan to handcraft them. They were the only pair in the whole world.

Alice burst into tears upon realizing there was only one left.

She even plotted a resignation from Rose upon her next return.

Just then, Mia woke up from her sleep.

Alice was still crying.

"Alice, why are you crying?" Mia crawled over and embraced her arm, comforting her while drifting back to sleep.

"Miss, I lost one of the butterfly hair clips. Madam Stella would fire me!" Alice was overwhelmed with sorrow and cried even harder.

Mia pondered for a moment and spoke, "It wasn't Alice's fault. I gave it to the nice gentleman. Mom says we shouldn't take things for granted."

Alice's crying abruptly ceased. "Really?"

"Don't cry, Alice. I'll protect you. You won't get fired." Mia assured her while bobbing her head like a pecking chick. It wasn't long before she fell asleep again.

Unable to sleep in the middle of the night, Evie came to check on Mia and overheard their conversations from the doorway.

Evie let out a gentle sigh.

In truth, Alice was incredibly loyal.

When Mia was two years old, she was attacked by a Dobermann in Chicago, and it was Alice who selflessly shielded her. Alice sacrificed a chunk of flesh on her leg that was still missing to this day. However, Mia was growing up, and Alice's clumsy nature made it increasingly difficult for her to keep a watchful eye on her.

To spare Athena from worrying about the incident with Byron, Evie decided to keep it a secret.

Nevertheless, she did mention the need to find an additional nanny to Athena.
