Chapter 20 He Is My Former Comrade

Wearing a look of sheer grimness, Lupine cast a look in Jared's direction. Intimidated by his imposing aura, the latter tensed up instantly.

It's no joke! He's no ordinary man! In fact, he's deemed the Custodian of Jadeborough, but I'm only the young heir of Cordrington Corporation! "Mr. Synder, his dad is the Chairman of Cordrington Corporation," Caleb whispered to Lupine hastily.

Lupine nodded and thundered out coldly, "Jared Cordrington, I know you're the young heir of Cordrington Corporation. In fact, I'm well aware that your corporation has been paying us a large sum of tax annually."

Jared shuddered uncontrollably as Lupine glowered menacingly at him like a ferocious beast. He tried to appease Lupine by buttering him up, "Yes! That's what we should do as law-abiding citizens!" Even though Lupine could not teach Jared a lesson, he reprimanded the latter relentlessly, "Remember this, don't ever think that you're free to act as you like just because you are paying taxes annually. Heed my words, okay?"

Jared's face turned ashen. He nodded apprehensively, fearful of infuriating Lupine further.

"All right. Since the matter is resolved, let's go!" Lupine could scarcely stay another second there, fearing that he could not refrain from smacking Jared's face and even finishing him off. However, he had to restrain himself from doing so!

No doubt, Lupine had no fear of stepping on anyone's toes. After all, he could still lead a free and easy lifestyle after eradicating Jared. Self-assured with his competence, he was sure as h*ll he would be able to wander freely elsewhere. Nevertheless, he knew that he must not put Christopher in deep water.

At that thought, Lupine could not help held it in indignantly! No words could describe how much he missed those days when he vanquished ruthless foes with Christopher many years ago. Apart from that, he could not fathom why Christopher made up his mind to let go of such meaningful life in the past and swallow his dignity to lead the current life instead.

"Okay! Mr. Synder, this way, please." Caleb nodded right away and turned to step out with Lupine. After all, everyone was clueless about the latter's identity as he had appeared out of the blue. Right that instant, Jared heaved a sigh of relief. Holy crap, what a close shave!

After Lupine and the others left, the banquet was engulfed by an air of embarrassment. The liveliness and boisterousness moments ago were gone. There was intense grimness amid resentment on Jared's face, but he could only suppress it.

Fabian, Fabio, and the others from the Murrays were nonplussed. Never had they expected that things would turn out that way.

Initially, they planned to retrieve the land of Dragon Valley and also beat the brains out of Christopher. Unexpectedly, all their efforts went down the drain.

Christopher scowled at Jared as he snapped coldly, "Jared Cordrington, do you still think I need to kneel at you before leaving?"

Jared could not retaliate, although he was prevailed by utter resentment. The truth was, a big shot was backing Christopher up at the moment. Thus, he suddenly lost the trump card to threaten Julianna. "Pfft! Don't jump to a hasty conclusion about who will get the last laugh! The lucky star is indeed shining on you since you get to know Mr. Synder. But, so what? Didn't you notice he couldn't take action against me too? Anyway, you're only a worthless small fry. It's undoubtedly your wishful thinking that Mr. Synder will back you up forever!" Jared sneered.

"Mr. Cordrington has a point. After all, our own competence is the key to success!" Fabian echoed, puffing up his chest.

Christopher could not help snickering discreetly. So, does he mean that I have to rely on Lupine?

If Lupine happened to overhear Jared's words, he would have blushed crimson for sure. Unequivocally, he was one of those under Christopher's command in the military. If not for Christopher, he would not have the opportunity to hold the high post.

Deep down, Christopher snorted. Jared Cordrington, don't you know I don't have to rely on anyone? I'm Christopher Yaeger, the respectable General! I'm the mighty supporter anyone could ever ask for! Catching sight of Christopher in silence, Jared presumed he had scared the wits out of the latter. After regaining his usual composure, he scoffed, "This serves as a warning for you. You'll be sorry for getting on my nerves!"

"Mr. Cordrington, just go ahead. No matter what, I'll play along with you. Julianna, let's go!" Christopher uttered fearlessly.

The next moment, he pulled Julianna up without sparing Jared another glance. Next, he turned and strode off toward the entrance, paying no heed to everyone having their eyes on him. Someone alongside Jared whispered warily to him, "Mr. Cordrington, are we still carrying on with the banquet, or should we...”

Temper flaring, Jared cut him off by fuming, "What's the point of carrying on with that now? Just call it off!"

Sensing that Jared was blowing a fuse, the other guests dispersed right away, other than the Murrays. Fabio lowered his voice and asked tactfully, "Mr. Cordrington, are you going to let him off the hook this round?"

"Get lost! I already have something in my mind," Jared responded in frustration. His head was all in a spin.

In a blink of an eye, everyone left the grand hall but Jared, who was boiling with rage. Nonetheless, he knew he should not irk Lupine by settling a score with Christopher impulsively. Hence, he called his father to double-check if the latter was closely acquainted with Lupine.

In the meantime, Christopher and Julianna were seated in the car outside the entrance of Wyvern Hotel.

Julianna asked in bafflement, "Christopher, how did you get to know the Custodian of Jadeborough?"

"He used to be my comrade!" Christopher replied softly.

"Ah! You should tell everyone that earlier. If so, Uncle Fabian and his family surely wouldn't have the cheek to pick on you just now!" Julianna gasped. It never crossed her mind that Christopher and Lupine used to be comrades.

"I don't feel like doing that, and there's no need for me to do so too!" Christopher stated placidly. I mustn't reveal my identity as a General now!

However, Julianna could not resist feeling touched, assuming Christopher swallowed his pride to seek help from his former comrade for her sake. She never doubted he was a man who valued comradery. Hence, she was convinced he would not put Lupine in a tight spot if he had a choice.

Meanwhile, Harold Cordrington, Chairman of Cordrington Corporation picked up his phone in his office to give Jared a call. Soon, the latter's voice sounded from the other end of the line. "Dad, what's wrong? Have you obtained any news? What's the relationship between Christopher Yaeger and Mr. Synder?"

Harold explained nonchalantly, "I'd given Mr. Larson a call just now. According to him, Christopher Yaeger and Mr. Synder are not closely acquainted. Moreover, they'd never crossed paths with each other before this. Yaeger is blessed to have Mr. Synder backing him up. I bet Mr. Synder is doing so willingly because he used to be in the military too."

"Ah! That's great then!" Jared was completely at ease and heaved a sigh of relief.

He had a hunch it was impossible for Lupine to be closely acquainted with Christopher. Ha! How's it possible for the Custodian and a retired soldier to cross paths with each other?

"I know you have designs on that young woman from the Murrays. However, don't be too serious about it. You should still focus on your career advancement. Now that Centurion Corporation is investing a few billion to develop Dragon Valley, our family will be incredibly rich if we can collaborate with them. On top of that, the Murrays' land will fall into our hands too! It'll be pointless for Christopher Yaeger to seek Lupine's help then. By then, your desired woman will be automatically in your possession too!" Harold analyzed indifferently.

"Yes, Dad. I got it!" Jared replied solemnly.

"Bear in mind that career is the most important thing for a man. Tons of women will surely fall head over heels for you as long as you are wealthy and omnipotent. A retired soldier like Christopher Yaeger is indeed a worthless thrash. It's easy as rolling log to get rid of him any time later," Harold added sardonically.

"Dad, don't worry. I'm convinced I'll be able to sign a contract with Centurion Corporation for collaboration in their project," Jared reassured him.

After hanging up, he was flushed with excitement. It was as though the Cordrington family was already collaborating with Centurion Corporation, and he was at the peak of prominence. He hissed ferociously, "Julianna Murray, sooner or later, I'll have you in the palm of my hand. Christopher Yaeger, you'll be doomed by stepping on my toes!"

At night, Christopher was sitting on the chair by the river bank of Jadeborough, gazing at the flowing river.

Lupine lambasted, "Jared Cordrington is definitely the son of a b*tch! General, how could you bear with him? Let me finish him off and throw him into the river to feed the fish!"

“Finish him off and throw him into the river to feed the fish?" Christopher turned to face him instantly. His lips contorted into a smirk as he asked emotionlessly, "Aren't we too merciful by doing so?"

"Mr. Yaeger, what do you plan to do? I won't hesitate to give it my all in assisting you!" Lupine emphasized earnestly.

"You don't have to do anything. Whoever has the audacity to provoke me is seemingly digging his own grave! I'm going to let him have a taste of his own medicine so mercilessly that he wished he were dead!" Christopher gritted his teeth.
