Mates Conquer Everything, Right?
61 Putting The Pack First

With my heartbeat calm in my chest, I stand up from the bench. Taking Chris’ jacket, I put it on my right shoulder. His scent can mask mine. Igétas’ told me many times how anyone can smell my humanness, but I’ve got something in my favor: Because of my training, I look like a werewolf with strong arms and legs. The Rogue will not suspect a thing if everything goes right.

The Luna-courage gives me strength and confidence. I will not let it go unnoticed. I turn around looking at the bastard. My eyesight is improved. Behind him, I see Oliver miles away at the forest edge. He is not alone, it looks like the whole town is empty and ready to help. Is Tharros so clever that he has instructed the rest of the pack to stand by for an attack?

Only a second has passed and I walk to the rogue who is still holding Yolanda like a lifeline. She is his ticket out of here. The primal feeling of protection comes over me when I see Welton lying on the cold floor. Dying and helpless. I need to act fast or this is going to be a bloodbath.

Still having the almost dried-up tears on my face, I look him in the eyes. I give him the scared birdy look. He feeds off it, stroking his ego.

“Ah, such a beautiful girl. You will do just fine.”He tells me with a grimace, thinking everything is going as planned.

“I am only going with you if you don’t harm the pack anymore.” I make my accent more American hoping to conceal the fact I am not.

“You are not in a place to make demands, dear.” He is almost done with his statement when I take a knife off the table with my left hand Holding it to my neck. The movement is slow for my eyes, but I feel the air move and know I just used wolf’s speed. I make a mental note to add it to the list I gave Maya.

“You came here for me. If you do not do what I tell you, I will kill myself.” My voice is low, I hear a little growl slip in between the words.

The knife is sharp and I keep it in place, knowing there is an important vein in that spot, thanks to the lessons from Joe.

“Oh, I know what is in store for me if I go with you. You just told us your plan. Believe me, I prefer killing myself rather than going through what you have planned.”

“Spoken like a true Power of the Pack.” He is calculating his decision.

I need to get his gun with silver bullets. Having the jacket on my shoulder gives me more time to get to it, before he sees what I’m doing.

“Do we have a deal?” I ask, holding my knife in his direction, handle side to him, the blade in my palm. With one move he can slice me open. He loosens his grip on Yolanda to take the knife from me. Busy with this action and thinking I am complying, he doesn’t look like he is scheming anymore. I take a step forward giving him the knife. His eyes are on the deadly weapon in front of him, he isn’t holding his gun tightly anymore.

I just need a distraction. Something so I can take the weapon away from him. As soon as I finish my thought, Amanda shoots up from her seat and throws a knife at the attacker. His head jerks to look at Amanda. He letsYolanda go, and before he can tighten his grip on the gun, I am already moving. My hand moves as if it is guided by a higher power. I grab the gun by its barrel, yanking it out of his hand. To my surprise, I can overpower him. Turning the weapon around, pointing it at his head, I take a breath.Am I ready to shoot a man? To kill someone so easily with the pull of a trigger? The last time happened so quickly, there wasn’t a chance for me to back away. Now there is.

“Are you going to shoot, bitch?” He spats the word out, hating the situation.

’No, we are going to lock you up in prison.”

“You call yourself a wolf? Can’t you handle a little death on your hands?”

He wants to die, not rot in a cell for the rest of his life. He is taunting me. I smirk at him.

“I do not call myself a wolf or even the Power of the Pack.”

He looks confused. I throw the jacket on the floor. He is still not getting it. The Alpha makes a move to stand and I make sure not to take my eyes off the stinking rogue.

He smells me, eyes going wide with the recognition of my humanness. I am still pointing the gun at his head.

“How?” He asks, and I shrug my shoulders.

“That is not something you should concern yourself with. Let’s get you and your friends a nice new room, shall we?”

That was the signal for him to go for my weapon. Feeling the Luna-courage subsiding, but still present, I shoot. Right in his eye. The other rogues are moving to me. I don’t want to shoot, I don’t see a better idea in the spilt second, remembering the lessons from Joe: ‘’If you only want to hurt someone, you do need to know how to aim. Shoot effectively.’’ And I do.

I shoot one of the rogues in his shoulder and knee, the next one in the foot, and when I want to shoot another one in the shoulder, the gun goes silent. The bullets are gone.

Tharros commands members of the pack to stand and contain the intruders. Oliver comes in with Maya behind him and Theresa next to her.

“Welton!” I say and Maya rushes to him. Oliver and the others are taking care of the intruders and leaving the room.

I look at the dead body on the ground in front of me. Lifeless and still. I did that, I took a life.

Igétas hugs me and I feel the last bit of Luna-courage leave my body. The silence isn’t surrounding us anymore. Everyone is talking, making themselves throw up. The scene makes me gag. Igétas leads me outside and I puke. The honey-looking substance lays on the grass.

“I’ll get Maya,” Igétas tells me, but I stop him.

“Welton needs her more.”

“He has already been sent to the hospital and is in surgery.”

Suddenly, Maya stands next to us. “I heard you talking.” She can move with wolf speed when there is an attack, I remember the rules.

“She had four shots of wolfsbane.”

Maya looks at me, then at the puke on the ground. “Okay, you haven’t expelled enough of the substance. We need to pump your stomach. You could be sick for days.”

I feel the effect of the poison now that my Luna-courage isn’t canceling it out.

Before Maya can take me away, Tharros comes to us with Yolanda.

“You went rogue, human. You are a wildcard, and I can’t trust you. I had a plan.”

He looks mad, like werewolf angry level and I feel my last bit of energy rise up from the core of my being.

How dare he, I saved them all!

I feel my anger fuel my activated bravery and let it loose.
