Sylvia said with some embarrassment, “You didn’t need to go through the trouble. You can just take me to a place Odell can't find. We'll stay in a hotel.”

She choked. That was true.

Thomas looked back at her and smiled. “I hardly come here, so the house is usually empty. If you guys live here, it'll be like adding some warmth to the house. You'll be doing me a favor.”

Then, he got out of the car.
