“God, you’re such an imbecile! Once she realizes that Kai is never coming back, and that you’re the one who has been kind and just to her, and has protected her from the big, bad Ronin, you’ll have won the girl. Your little peasant will be yours, and you can get married, and have ugly, peasant babies for all I care. You can stay on this rock or go with us, I don’t care – as long as I get what I want. The intel to save my ass. Those are your rewards. You get the girl, and you get to escape. Get it, moron?”

“I think so, yes.”

Ronin pinched the bridge of his nose and growled in Kort’s direction “I swear, if there wasn’t so much at stake and if I didn’t need all of you I’d just strangle you all with my bare hands. Unfortunately, I can’t do this myself, so I’ll suffer the fools in the hand I’ve been dealt. All jokers. Lucky for me.”

Ronin rolled his dark eyes and sighed at the hopeless look on Kort’s face. He knew the other man was already imagining a life with the unimportant peasant, and for once it didn’t anger him. It helped to fuel the fire for his plan; it gave him confidence that this plan would work.
