Chapter 78

Chapter 78

Just as Quintin and Caroline were thinking about the reason, Faith returned.

“Everyone’s here?”

After Faith entered, she glanced at everyone.

“What’s going on? Everyone seems to have a pale complexion. Did you all not get enough sleep last night?

I’ve seen the news. I heard that there was a fire in the Ziegler residence last night. Is that true?”

“Of course it’s true!” Carmen said.

“I heard from the servant that it burned Mrs. Ziegler’s house. Did anyone die in the fire?”

When Quintin heard her question, he said coldly, “I think you can’t wait for someone to die, right?”

“Quintin, you’re right! I’m just here to see if Mrs. Ziegler is still around. If she dies, won’t I be able to get the inheritance?”

Faith did not feel that it was inappropriate to say this at all, but it made Quintin furious.

“Guards! Throw this crazy woman out!”

Hearing Quintin chase her away, Faith shouted, “Hey, Quintin, I’m your aunt. How dare you chase me away! I didn’t get my share. Why should I leave?”

Quintin didn’t want to waste his time on her anymore. Luke and Kerr stepped forward and brought Faith out of the living

room.

“Hey, let go! Let go of me! You idiots! Do you know how expensive my clothes are? Can you afford to compensate me if I tear them? Huh?”

Faith was dragged away, leaving only her shouting.

Caroline sighed deeply, not understanding how someone like Faith could exist in the Ziegler family.

They couldn’t find anything on the surface, so they could only let Luke and the others investigate in secret.

They believed that it wouldn’t be long before the truth was revealed!

The demons would eventually reveal their true colors.

After the servants left, Carmen waved at Mayson. “Leo, come over and let Grandma take a look. Were you scared last night?” Mayson did not move and continued to snuggle in Caroline’s arms.

Last night, he was asleep and did not know that there was a fire.

“Leo was frightened. I’ll bring him down to rest first.”

Caroline found an excuse and walked out with the child.

Quintin also left together and returned to Tanglevine Residence. Caroline personally went to the kitchen to prepare lunch.

After lunch, Caroline received a call from Riley saying that he had found Mortician Patrick’s whereabouts.

Caroline asked, “I’m going out for a while. Should Leo come with me, or should you take him along with you?” She prepared

to leave.

“With me, of course. Where are you going?”

“Something came up.”

Caroline did not tell him. After reminding her son, she went out directly.

Quintin quickly called Flynn over. Flynn asked, “Mr. Ziegler, do you still want to continue following Ms. Lewis today?” Mayson frowned when he heard this. His Quinton was really too much. He actually sent someone to follow Mommy? However, the next words from Quintin managed to dispel much of Mayson’s disdain for him.

He said, “Follow her secretly. If she’s in trouble, think of a way to help her! Don’t let her find out that I asked you to go!”

“Understood!”

Flynn felt that Quintin seemed to have a hint of humanity in him as he showed concern for Caroline’s safety.

Mayson also thought that his Quinton seemed to be showing some semblance of being a man. He decided to observe further and see if there was any chance of reconciling with him.

Caroline left the Ziegler residence and hopped into Riley’s car, with Flynn secretly following behind.

Chapter 78

Not long after, Caroline noticed from the rearview mirror that she was being followed by the Ziegler family’s car. She guessed that Quintin might have arranged for Flynn to follow her.

She couldn’t help but think that the man was simply bored and thought that by tracking her, he could somehow influence or intimidate her.

Riley also noticed that a car was following him. However, with his driving skills, it was easy for him to shake off the car

behind him.

After ten minutes, when Riley checked again, there was no car following them anymore. At that moment, Flynn’s car was stuck in traffic, surrounded by vehicles on both sides. It seemed impossible for him to escape.

He had indeed witnessed the impeccable driving skills of the young man. It seemed challenging for him to continue tracking

them now.

In less than 40 minutes, Riley brought Caroline to a shantytown in the old town.

After getting out of the car, they walked into the dilapidated alley together. Looking at the dirty and messy environment. Caroline asked, “Why does Patrick live in such a place?”

Based on Caroline’s understanding of the mortician’s profession, his monthly salary would not be low. Moreover, Patrick had worked for so many years. Could it be that he did not have any savings?

Did he end up living in a shantytown?

“I did some investigation, and it seems he had a gambling addiction that led him to lose everything. His wife even left him, and now he’s left with nothing. Even basic survival is a challenge for him.”

Indeed, it was not surprising. Gambling could be extremely detrimental.

After a few turns, they finally arrived at a small dilapidated courtyard. Riley pushed the door open, and Caroline entered

with him.

“Hello. Is anyone home?”

Riley shouted a few times outside the door. Not long after, a crippled middle–aged man walked out of the house.

Having seen a photo of Patrick at the funeral home, Caroline couldn’t bring herself to connect the image with the man standing before her now. He appeared disheveled, with tattered clothes and an unkempt beard, making it difficult to make the connection in her mind.

“Who are you?”

Patrick asked in a hoarse voice.

“Hello. Sir. We came to find you because we wanted to ask you about something. Just to confirm, two years ago, were you still working as a mortician at Valley Funeral Home?”

“That’s right. Why are you looking for me?” Patrick was more vigilant.

“Here’s the thing. We’d like to know if, five years ago, on the sixth of August, you ever offered an embalming service to a deceased man named Lydia Thompson?”

Riley was in charge of asking questions, while Caroline was secretly observing from the side.

Upon hearing the question about events from five years ago, Patrick’s expression froze, and he replied with a question of his own, “Who are you to her?”

Based on Patrick’s response, Caroline could deduce that this mortician indeed knew her mother.

He must even remember what happened on August 6th, five years ago.

Tm Lydia’s daughter, Caroline said.

Patrick turned his head to look at Caroline, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes. However, his unkempt hair concealed his murky eyes, making it difficult to discern his exact emotions.

However, his behavior was a little irritable, and he directly ordered them to leave.

“I don’t remember. It happened five years ago. Hurry up and leave!”

Seeing him ready to leave, Riley pleaded, “Sir, please reconsider. We are investigating the death of Lydia, and this matter is of great importance. Can you please help us?”

Limping a few steps, Patrick’s inner turmoil was evident. “I don’t know; I really don’t know. It’s been so long; who can remember? Don’t come looking for me, and I don’t know anything. Just leave… just leave…”

Patrick directly threw them out of the courtyard and closed the courtyard door.

Caroline was certain that he knew something, but he did not want to mention what had happened back then.

She wouldn’t give up!

Standing outside the courtyard, she knocked on the door and said, “Sir, can you please help?

‘My mother was buried and cremated in Valley Funeral Home five years ago, but now I find her ashes are all lime. The whereabouts of her ashes are unknown. I just want to find out what happened back then.

If you do, would you please tell me?”
